What is respite care?

Respite care provides relief for a caregiver who takes care of a chronically ill or disabled Veter-an at home. It is usually limited to 30 days per calendar year and services can be provided in the home or in other community settings such as the Community Living Center (CLC) or one of the nursing homes with which the VA con-tracts.

An in-home respite day does not provide 24 hour coverage. Six hours a day of coverage is considered one respite day in the home.If 24 hour care is needed or desired, the CLC or a contract nursing home are additional options available. Your doctor, also known as your Patient-Aligned Care Team (PACT) Provider, can order these ser-vices. For some Veterans, a copay is required.

Homemaker/Home Health Aide (H/HA)

These services are available to support Veter-ans at home and keep them from nursing home level of care. Assistance is provided in the home by non-skilled, certified aides from agen-cies that contract with the VA . These aides help Veterans with their activities of daily living.Your PACT Provider can complete a functional assessment to determine if you meet criteria for this service. If criteria is met, you may be eligible for 4 to 10 hours per week of help at home.

There is no cost to the Veteran for this ser-vice. Authorizations for this care are usually in 6-month or 1 year increments.

Adult Day Health Care (ADHC)

ADHCs provide health maintenance and reha-bilitative services to Veterans in a group setting during daytime hours. Veterans can partici-pate one to five days/week in this type of care. Some facilities provide transportation to and from their site.

Your PACT Provider can order this service if you are interested in participating. For some Veterans, a copay is required. Authorizations for these services are made an-nually.
