Welcome to the 2014 Festival - a fun-filled fortnight feast of local food, drink, hospitality and creativity.
Last year saw a special fortnight of food and drink, events and celebrations. Residents and visitors discovered what previously hidden delights were on offer locally, and five new companies kicked off trading all year round as a result. It was such a success, we’re back for more.
On the menu this year are even more competitions, demonstrations, music and markets, not to mention the four showcase events – The Knollmead Orchard Apple Blossom Open Day, The Freshwater Sardine Festival, the Surbiton Village Fête and the Seething Sports Day.
Organised by a handful of local volunteers, the festival is truly a community enterprise open to everyone to join in whenever and wherever they like. We believe that by creating things and bringing people together we can release talents and energies in our community in a positive and engaging way.
This year’s festival continues to celebrate local business and showcase the talent in our community. Beyond this focus on food and drink we hope it stimulates people to think about the importance of an active and vibrant community and how that adds to a sense of pride in where we live.
For up to the minute information on events during the festival, see our website www.surbitonfoodfestival.org, twitter or facebook.
If you’re interested in getting involved in any other community merrymaking and celebrations, please email [email protected]

Seethi
ng Pasty
The history of the Seething Pasty is a complex one. Legend tells of the four giants, brothers who argued with three leaving the area taking the pasty to Cornwall, Wales and the North, where it still thrives today.
Why the Seething pasty died out after the closure of the Talcum Mines is not understood but this year, as part of the Surbiton Food Festival we are inviting people to recreate this world famous treat.
We know the ingredients but not the recipe so everyone is invited to try their hand in making the new Seething Pasty. Entries will be judged on Saturday 10th May at the Village Fête in St Andrew’s Square.
CD Jennings, the butchers on Ewell Road, are generously offering a 10% discount on the meat and CF & MC Stear, the greengrocers on Surbiton Hill Park, are offering a 25% discount on the pasty vegetables.
If you want to enter, the ingredients are as follows:
The quantities and method are entirely down to your imagination and inspiration.
The very best of luck to you all...!
You can hear the story of ‘The Four Brothers - the legend of the Seething Pasty’ at the Village Fête.

Kingston PoundLocal money invested in our local communityKingston Pound came out of the involvement with other initiatives such as the Surbiton Food Festival and the availability of Surrey Save Credit Union in the Kingston Borough. Also, the involvement with other initiatives linked to permaculture and the efficient use of resources.
So all of these things promote the idea of ‘well-being’ and strong community spirit. Developing a local currency taps into this and links it to business and the local economy.
When we spend money on the high street 80% will leave the local area immediately and so Kingston Pound will help keep it circulating within the borough. If done at scale it must have an economic impact. That is good for local independent businesses, good for jobs and good for the community.
It makes sense to trial Kingston Pound at the Surbiton Food Festival because this is where the idea was originally devised during the autumn of 2012.

Kingston Permaculture Reserve, Knollmead Allotments, Tolworth
12 noon - 6:00pm
In 1992 a small group of local residents had the vision to create a permaculture garden, they sought to show that food can be produced locally, without negative environmental impact, and alongside ecological restoration.
Since then, the reserve has been transformed in to a vibrant orchard, producing around 20 traditional
varieties of apple, over a dozen varieties of plum, as well as pears, hazelnuts, sloe and raspberries
– to name but a few!

Kingston Permaculture ReserveCome and smell the apple blossom at a free orchard open day for all the family. Bring a picnic and musical instruments and see how the spoils of the Seething talc mine have been transformed in to a vibrant orchard, with model village building, pond dipping and orchard tours.
The reserve focusses on five ways to wellbeing: connect, be active, take notice, keep learning, and give. The ‘give’ part is especially important – involvement is not a transaction but something we do for nature and our community. The produce is a bonus.
Please wear stout footwear. Dogs welcome. Located on Knollmead Road over the railway bridge at KT5 9QP. Access is through the allotment site behind Knollmead Primary School. The nearest bus stop is for the K1 bus on Barnsbury Lane. From Tolworth railway station walk to the end of Donald Woods Gardens and take the path through to Knollmead.
