Surfactants from ClariantWhat we offer for industrial customers

Research and development

In addition to the product range we offer

our customers comprehensive advice

and technical service. Our application

laboratories assist you in developing

modern system solutions and help you to

select the products that are suitable

for your applications.

Our product range is constantly being

expanded by intensive research and

development work and is thus geared to

the requirements of our customers as

well as to optimization of the production

methods.

Quality and environment

Clariant’s Functional Chemicals Division

in Germany has established a quality

management system in accordance

with ISO 9001 in the production, rese-

arch & development and marketing

sectors. All products are subject to

strict quality control in our analytical

department to ensure our high quality

standard.

To safeguard environmentally friendly

operations the environment manage-

ment system in accordance with the eco

audit regulations (EEC 1836/93) was

introduced at Gendorf/Burgkirchen

(Germany), our largest production site.

Clariant’s Division Functional Chemi-

cals is one of the world's leading

manufacturers of surfactants and po-

lyglycols. The product range encom-

passes anionic, nonionic, cationic and

amphoteric surfactants. These include

raw materials for detergents and

cleaners, cosmetics and special pro-

ducts for chemical and industrial

applications.

This brochure presents a selection

of our products for chemical and indu-

strial applications.

The largest production

site of Division

Functional Chemicals:

Clariant Gendorf/

Burgkirchen.

Production and sales

Our surfactants are manufactured at our

production sites in Gendorf/Burgkirchen

and Wiesbaden (Germany), Tarragona

(Spain), Charlotte (USA), Clear Lake

(USA), Mexico City (Mexico), Coatza-

coalcos (Mexico), Maracay (Venezuela),

Sao Paulo (Brazil), Zarate (Argentina)

and elsewhere, and are available world-

wide through our sales organization.

Industrial Applications of Surfactants

Surfactants are used as wetting agents,

emulsifiers and dispersing agents

for different chemical and industrial

applications. Clariant offers products for

the following fields:

■ Emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization

■ Dispersing agents for pigment pre-

parations, coatings, inks and paints

■ Wetting agents for hard surfaces,

ceramics, wood, plastics and metals

■ Emulsifiers for micro- and macro

emulsions of fats, hydrocarbons and

silicon oils

■ Emulsifiers for polyolefin wax

emulsions

■ Wetting agents for electroplating

processes

■ Surfactants for the building industry

■ Emulsifiers for bitumen emulsions

■ Auxiliaries for the sugar industry

■ Defoamers

Our service: new emulsifiers –

from the laboratory to production

In selecting suitable emulsifier systems

preliminary trials are necessary to

determine the stability of the monomer

emulsion and polymer dispersion and

the properties of the polymer films.

We will gladly supply product samples

from our commercial range for these

preliminary trials.

Besides the existing range Clariant

offers smaller sample amounts of

non-commercial products for labora-

tory investigations. These include

nonionic emulsifiers based on alcohol

ethoxylates, which are synthesized in

our development laboratory. If requi-

red, almost any alcohol can be reac-

ted with the desired amount of ethylene

oxide and a sample provided.

Our production know-how permits

rapid scale-up of new products from

the laboratory to the production stage.

Development products are thus

rapidly available commercially. We

will gladly advise you of what we

can do for you.

Surfactants from ClariantEmulsifiers for emulsion polymerization

Emulsifiers are substances that become

active at interfaces. They perform a

number of tasks in the complex system

of emulsion polymerization. For example

they enable the water-insoluble mono-

mers to be distributed extremely finely

in the aqueous phase and stabilize the

polymer dispersion produced from it.

Clariant emulsifiers are used to manu-

facture a variety of polymer systems:

■ In the polymerization of vinyl acetate

to homopolymers or co- and ter-

polymers together with other vinyl

esters, acrylates, vinyl chloride

and ethylene

■ In the polymerization of pure acrylate

and styrene-acrylate dispersions

■ In the manufacture of butadiene-

styrene latices

■ In the manufacture of polyvinyl

chloride using the emulsion polymer-

ization process

■ In the manufacture of butadiene-

styrene rubber

■ In the manufacture of ABS plastic

The diagram beside shows a model of

the complex interactions involved in the

stabilization of the polymer particles.

18

Surfactants from ClariantEmulsifiers for emulsion polymerization

Apart from stabilizing the monomer

emulsion, emulsifiers have a great

influence on the properties of the poly-

mer dispersions. These include important

parameters such as particle size and

particle size distribution of the polymer

particles, viscosity, electrolyte stability,

frost resistance of the dispersion, film-

forming properties and many other

application properties of the polymer

dispersion.

The slightest changes to the polymer-

ization system can lead to consider-

able variations in the dispersion proper-

ties. To ensure consistent quality of

the polymer dispersion, our emulsifiers

are subject to strict quality control.

The influence of the nonionic emul-

sifier on the dispersion properties

was investigated by means of a model

formulation for a polyvinyl acetate

dispersion.

The ®Emulsogen EPN grades investigated are nonionic emulsifiers based on an

oxoalcohol with different degrees of ethoxylation.

The two graphs that follow on page 8

show the influence of the degree of

ethoxylation of the fatty alcohol ethoxy-

lates on the viscosity of the dispersion

and on the particle size. The emulsifier

concentrations were kept constant.
