CHEMISTRY MODULE-4
CLASSIFICATION OF CATALYSIS
Characteristics of a catalyst
• Remains chemically unchanged at the end of reaction.
• Small quantity is required to bring about large amount of change.
• No effect on equilibrium position of a reversible reaction and affects rate of backward and forward reactions to same extent.
• Catalyst cannot start a reaction, but some reactions appear to occur in presence of it.
• The action of catalyst is extremely specific.
• Catalysts can act either as promotors or as poisons.
Reactants and catalyst are in
same phase.
