Burns
History Summary: Historically burns were rotated among the general services. In 1965 a small area in the Woodard building was set aside to care for the burn victims of the cruise ship Yarmouth Castle which burned and sank off of Miami. This represented the birth of the Burn service at JMH. However, a well organized unit was not developed until 1975 when the service was taken over by Dr. C. Gillon Ward. The burn service has been in continuous operation since then in various locations throughout the complex. It is the only burn center in South Florida. Organization: Administratively the service is a division in the Department of General Surgery. Faculty and administrative staff are provided by the University Of Miami Miller School Of Medicine. Patient care staff is provided by Jackson Memorial Hospital. Faculty and Staff Nicholas Namias, MD, FACS, FCCM, is Chief of service and Associate Professor of Surgery and Anesthesiology at the University of Miami / Miller School of Medicine (UM/MSM). His major interests are in surgical infections, trauma, burns, and critical care. Louis R. Pizano, MD, is Assistant Professor of Surgery at the UM/MSM with a special interest in critical care. Carl I. Schulman MD, MPH, is Assistant Professor of Surgery at the UM/MSM with a special interest in the febrile response to critical illness and injury. Physician Assistant Robin Varas, ARNP, is a burn specialist and clinical educator with over 15 years experience in burn care. Olga Quintana, ARNP, is a burn specialist with over 15 years experience in burn care. There are also dedicated personnel for social work, psychology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Hospitals Utilized All patients are admitted to JMH. Adult and pediatric non-critical burns are admitted to the Burn Floor, Trauma 3-B. Critically injured adults are admitted to the Burn ICU,
