Surrey East Flies to Lorne 28th - 30th September 2018

We are holding a weekend at the Girlguiding centre in Lorne, Northern Ireland.

Why not join leaders who are flying out earlier in the week by staying locally to visit the Titanic Museum amongst the sights available. You can travel out and back at your own convenience.

The estimated cost is £120, dependant on sharing. Student prices are lower. A £80 part payment is now due and the final balance of the room cost due in May 2018. Flights and off site activities are not included in this price.

The training will begin on Friday evening after our arrival and will use local Irish resources with an Irish theme night on Saturday. Activities will include either Zip wire or Gorge walking on site. Or if preferred a visit to the university gardens.

Register your interest for the training weekend and book by emailing [email protected]. Training costs are a legitimate Guiding expense.

Make your payment by BACS please into the county bank account with Lorne and your surname as the reference.

    Bank account details are:

Girlguiding Surrey East Sort code 40-52-40 Account number 00022824

Bookings will close when there is no more accommodation at Lorne.

This weekend is open to everyone volunteering in Surrey East – why not bring your unit team?

    Baden Powell Adventure

With the change in programme we would like to know how many Guides are currently working on their

Baden-Powell Award and will be looking to attend a Baden-Powell Adventure in 2018. The County try to

offer an Adventure once a term and share this amongst the Divisions. (Although guides are able to look

outside of County). In order to ensure we offer the right amount and at approximately the right time we

would like to check how many guides will require a Baden-Powell Adventure between now and the end of

2018 to try and plan them for when they are needed.

If you can email [email protected] by February half-term with number of guides that should

be ready to attend a Baden-Powell Adventure in 2018 and approximately when they will be looking to do it

(they can attend before they complete the whole Challenge as long as they have completed 8 sections).

Social Media and Girlguiding. Remember this in 2017?

Do you wish you knew an easy way to use social media?

Does the thought of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram scare you?

If so this is the course for you!

We have received some funding from the Stay Awhile campaign to run a two-hour session of social media training which will include online security.

We have booked Horley Baptist Church on February 28th 2018 from 7 pm to 9 pm so you can ask all those ‘how do I…’ questions and hear it being explained in a very honest and down to earth way. The session will cover Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

By exploring this topic, we can start to use social media at our meetings to shout about the amazing experiences we create for girls. This will strengthen our recruitment conversations with people we know outside Girlguiding and help us move towards recruitment of new volunteers being part of everyday life in a positive way.

The sessions will be run by Paul Taylor (who is an award winning social media expert) and will lead into a session we hope to be able to run on county day 10th March 2018.

Spaces are limited so volunteers are asked to book via Rebecca at [email protected]. Please put ‘StayAwhile 28th Feb 2018’ in the subject of your email.

WWI Digital Archive Project 2018 2018 will mark the centennial anniversary of the end of WWI. Few families in Britain were unaffected by the conflict and in thousands of attics across the country there are photographs, diaries, letters and mementos that tell the story of a generation at war. In 2018, we want to preserve any story about the people whose lives were in any way affected by the Great War and events surrounding it. In collaboration with Oxford University, we aim to launch a national programme to digitally capture, safeguard and share these important personal items and reminiscences from the men and women of 1914-1918. On a daily basis these stories and objects are being lost to the nation, and the memory of the sacrifice of that generation consigned to oblivion. The men, women and children of 1914-1918 deserve better and their stories must be preserved for future generations – lest we forget.

‘Lest We Forget – Keep Their Stories Alive’ is about supporting local communities to run their own digitization days, in order to capture objects and memories held locally. We would like to offer Girlguiding London & South East England the unique opportunity to engage their local community, to run their own Digital Community Archive events, recording and saving objects and stories of the generation who lived through WWI.

This would take the form of training members of The Senior Section, Trefoil Guild and/or Adult Volunteers to become a ‘Digital Champion’. The ‘Digital Champion’ would then facilitate a ‘WWI Digital Community Archive Event’ in their community supported by a team of volunteers drawn from their network. Training will consist of a one day workshop, with locations across the UK. Trained Digital Champions will receive a resource kit which would include all the information and marketing materials required to facilitate a ‘WWI Digital Community Archive Event’. In November 2018, every item collected will then be published through a free-to-use online database for schools, scholars and the wider public.
