In 2011 we won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our world-leading research into the sustainable provision of safe water. This is the most prestigious honour a UK university can attain.
This is the third time we have won this prize: in 1996 the award was given to us for our pioneering work in satellite technology, while in 2002 the prize was given in recognition of our world-changing innovations in lasers, ion beams and optoelectronics.

120 years: A history of shaping the future
We recently celebrated the 120th anniversary of our foundation. The institution has evolved significantly in that time, but some things have remained constant.
We strongly believe that we should turn the new knowledge we generate into practical innovations that improve people’s lives, and we strongly believe that our students and academics should make a real impact on the world, for their own benefit as well as the great advances they can help bring about.

In 2012 we completed a memorable clean sweep by moving up the rankings in all four of the main university league tables, including an impressive 20-place rise in The Sunday Times University Guide.

Our students gave us a strong vote of confidence in the 2011 National Student Survey, with an 87 per cent overall-satisfaction score. This is a 5 per cent improvement from the previous year that puts us on course to achieve our ambition of being the best university in the country for student satisfaction.

The Library & Learning Centre
Our refurbished and extended Library & Learning Centre is the striking new building right at the heart of our campus. As well as being the academic centre of the University, it also includes the AppleSeed bookshop and a popular ground floor meeting area.
Our vast collection of books and journals is yours to explore. You can also access our huge electronic collection of books and journals whenever and wherever you need them.
The building is Wi-Fi-enabled throughout, with quiet and silent areas for concentrated individual study, communal meeting spaces for group work, and bookable rooms for discussions and practice based study.
There are 1,240 study spaces, open-access PC areas and labs, sound and image collections with viewing and listening facilities, specialist language learning facilities and resources for language self-study, self-service issues and returns, printing and photocopying facilities, and an informal learning zone with quick access to email and internet. The Library is open daily, staying open 24 hours a day from Sunday to Friday during semester with long opening hours during vacations.
We also provide an academic librarian for your subject area who will introduce you to the Library and help you to find and use the information resources for your academic needs.
SPLASH
Located within the Library, the Student Personal Learning and Study Hub – SPLASH – is a flexible, student-centred area that we have specifically developed to help you enhance your study.
Student Learning Advisors in SPLASH will help you to develop your study strategies and your transferable skills, plan your personal and academic development and provide opportunities for one to one guidance. Workshops and drop-in sessions will sharpen your skills in all-important areas including academic writing, managing time, presentation skills and revision strategies.
Your degree programme’s academic librarian will also work from SPLASH, providing face-to-face help and information-skills workshops.

The digital world will play a big part in your time with us. Whether you are using one of the 700 PCs in our open access PC rooms for research, connecting to our wireless network or working from home using our off campus secure web access, we will always provide you with efficient and innovative IT solutions.
All of our Courts of Residence feature a wired broadband network service known as ResNet. This service – which is included as part of your accommodation package – can also be found in some open access areas. We give you a personal storage area on our central file store and an email address with a 25GB inbox, as well as providing useful software packages under a site licence. The University campus, the town and the surrounding area provide a safe and pleasant place to live.
A frequent bus service linking campus with the town centre runs late into the night, and the local area is cycle-friendly too. The campus and Courts of Residence are patrolled by our friendly Security Team, whose on-site office is always open to visitors and staffed for phone calls.
Just ten minutes’ walk from campus, Guildford is an exciting mixture of historical, cultural and modern features. Whilst it offers all the convenience of a modern town, you’ll also feel as safe and included as in any village.

Our Accommodation Office will help you find the right place to live, on or off campus, at affordable rents throughout your time at Surrey.
Our accommodation is arranged in groups of self-catered housing called Courts of Residence and has been designed to provide you with a living space to make your own.
On the main campus there are modern launderettes, a post office, bank, bookshop, grocery store and newsagent close to the student residences. Large supermarkets and a halal grocery store are nearby, and a weekly fruit and vegetable market is held on campus.

Eating on campus
A variety of restaurants and cafes are available on campus to cater for all tastes and budgets. Chancellors serves a wide range of meals, whilst Young’s Kitchen provides freshly cooked authentic Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean food.
The Hillside Restaurant and Lounge is open from breakfast through to supper, serving snacks and fresh food.
Manor Park
A major expansion of our campus facilities has been taking place at Manor Park. The site is already home to our stunning new Postgraduate Medical School building and further academic facilities are on the way. Designed as a car-free village, the Manor Park residences offers over 1,500 en suite rooms. The new £36 million Surrey Sports Park, sits at the heart of the new development.

To help you get the most out of your university experience, you will be assigned a Link Tutor whilst at the International Study Centre. When you move to your degree, a personal tutor will be on hand to offer you guidance and support throughout your time with us.

The International Student Office
The International Student Office provides information and support, which is uniquely relevant to international students. It currently helps over 3,000 students from 145 different countries in areas such as immigration, work permits, police registration, opening bank accounts, part-time work and liaison with embassies and high commissions overseas.
We liaise closely with the Students’ Union in providing a wide range of activities for all international students. There is an end-of-year lunch for all those who are staying on campus at that time and the i-Festival, once a year, provides a chance for all students to experience and learn more about other cultures and traditions.

On Arrivals Day you will be greeted by ‘Freshers Angels’ (our student helpers) who help you find your way around and provide a friendly and welcoming point of contact. This helps settle you in very quickly, as from your first day you are immersed in our friendly campus environment.

Success starts here
Preparing for university is one of the most important things any student has to do. Making sure you have the academic and language skills you need to succeed will make your transition to university life a lot easier. The International Study Centre at the University of Surrey teaches you these skills as well as ways to enjoy living and studying in the UK.
Your first day at University
From the day you start your programme at the International Study Centre, you are part of the University. You will study and learn, and have access to the University facilities such as the Library & Learning Centre, Surrey Sports Park and Students’ Union.

Being an international student means you are part of a wide community of different nationalities. At the International Study Centre we know how to help you adjust to your new environment and make the most of your time in the UK.
Supporting you
Programmes at the International Study Centre are taught by specialists in university preparation. Your progress will be monitored at all times to make sure you remain on track to successfully complete the programme, while encouraging you to develop throughout your time with us.
University-style teaching
The International Study Centre introduces you to the style of teaching that you will experience on your degree. Taking part in tutorials, seminar-style classes and larger group lectures means you’ll be well prepared.
Direct progression to your degree
Joining the International Study Centre guarantees that you will receive a conditional offer of a degree place at the University. On successful completion of your course and having met the required entry standards, you will proceed directly to your university degree programme.

The International Study Centre is located in the heart of the Surrey campus. Close to accommodation and facilities you are only 15 minutes from the Guildford train station bringing you straight to central London in less than 40 minutes.

Flexible Entry
You can begin the International Foundation Year in either September or January for degree entry in the following September.
Please note: all students will need to sit for an IELTS exam at the end of the International Foundation Year and obtain a minimum of IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in each component), in order to progress onto University of Surrey degrees.
The International Foundation Year is a pathway programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training designed specifically to provide international students with a direct path to undergraduate degree study at the University.

Introduction to Financial AccountingThis unit provides you with a sound foundation in the basic principles of financial accounting. Engineering, Science and Mathematics* The Engineering, Science and Mathematics International Foundation Year leads to a wide range of degrees in engineering, science and mathematics related subjects.

I learned how to research, write and construct academic essays and also the skills of skimming and scanning which is fundamental to tackle the large amount of reading required in my degree studies. As I was aiming to start my degree in Sociology, I also did Sociology units at the International Study Centre which prepared me for the first year of my degree.
I’m having a great time at Surrey and the best thing so far is I have had the opportunity to set up a football club. We have quite a few members in the club and we have a lot of good memories together.
I chose to come to the UK for its good environment and opportunity to improve my English. The UK is also one of the best places to study Sociology. I chose Surrey as my friend had recommended that it is an excellent place to live and study.

To cover you as a student at the International Study Centre (ISC), you can purchase ‘StudyCare’. Designed for international students, the policy will cover you for loss of personal possessions, as well as providing health and medical insurance until the end of your ISC academic programme. The programmes at the University of Surrey International Study Cenre are run by Study Group, in partnership with the University of Surrey.

Looking back, I was working so hard and I thought that my graduation was so far away that I would never see it. But now I am standing here in a gown. It’s fabulous!
I would advise other young people to reallytake advantage of such an opportunity and to understand how this will help them in life in the future. The knowledge that they will get if they come to the UK to study will get them a long way.
It’s priceless; it’s like the most important thing you can get. It’s a great education. As a final message I would like to say come to Surrey and enjoy your life!
