On the prowl again.

VANCOUVER SHOULD pare down its overly ambitious plan for a $2-billion-plus buried SkyTrain line along Broadway towards UBC, says Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts.

She said she’s not worried the heavily promoted Vancouver rapid transit line might take priority ahead

of Surrey’s aim of building light rail lines.

But Watts warned “nobody’s getting anything” until there’s a deal with the province to generate more money in taxes or tolls for Trans-

Link and it will be important to keep a lid on costs of proposed projects if that process is to succeed.

“We can have all the grandiose ideas that we want, but unless that sustainable funding policy is in place, nothing’s going to happen,” she said.

TWO STUFFED blue-jerseyed Surrey Eagles sit on a paper tray watching over K.C. Gilroy as she takes a short break in her tiny, clut-tered o ce during a busy day at the Surrey Christmas Bureau (SCB).

It’s actually never not busy – not since several weeks ago, when Gilroy gratefully accepted the keys, courtesy of GWL Realty Advisors, to 8,000 square feet of space in which to make Christmas come true for about 1,800 Surrey families.

Gilroy, a chronic multi-tasker and self-

described “big-picture person,” is heading up the SCB for the third year in a row.

“ e big picture is that we can make this happen and it somehow unfolds,” she says modestly.

When it came to releas-ing a pair of recovering bald eagles back to nature Wednesday, ladies first was clearly not the way to go.

“So he has a chance to run,” explained Mindy Dick of the male.

Dick, a bird care and education instructor at OWL (Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society) in Delta, was among three people to rescue the pair last week from bushes just off of a walking trail in Crescent Park.

They were found around 4 p.m. Nov. 26 – interlocked by the talons – by a woman who was out walking her dog. The male had one of the female’s talons through his neck; the female, weighing nearly a kilo-gram heavier, had a talon puncturing her left thigh. Both also had puncture wounds in their feet and bruising.

Believed to have been fighting for some time, the eagles were exhausted when found but didn’t relax their hold on each other until netted.

Bev Day, founding

director of OWL, said it’s unclear why the pair were scrapping, and likened the tussle to children fighting over a Popsicle –“it’s the only analogy I can think of. Some of the characteris-tics are like spoiled kids.”

Dick, who carried the raptors out of the park with the help of OWL volunteer Todd Bowling and fellow staffer Sue Davies, said the two didn’t struggle through the process.

“They didn’t have much fight in them at all.”

Taken to the Delta facility, the otherwise healthy eagles were put on antibiotics for three days to stave off possible infection.

They were released at the park Wednesday morning, with the male given a 15-minute lead.

Dick said the pair would “pick up where they left off,” in their daily lives. She couldn’t predict if they would reconnect and start brawling again.

She described follow-ing the eagles through a rescue and release as extremely satisfying.

“There’s no feeling like it in the world,” Dick said.

Spirits soar as sparring eagles take flight

Distracted momentarily, she gives a sudden whoop when she realizes her trains have come in – cardboard trains from the printers that will be posted on the wall of the SCB’s Newton waiting room to honour sponsors and major donors.

Indeed, the entire charity is based on giving, whether it’s toys, money or time – and the latter includes 110 active volunteers.

On the receiving end are clients such as five-month-old Alisa. She and her mother Ashley MacMillan and father Wayne Terrel are all first-time recipients at the SCB.

“We are very broke,” says MacMillan as the family waits in the lobby to register. “We barely get enough money to feed ourselves and get diapers and formula for (Alisa).”

Seven hundred of their monthly $1,000 social assistance cheque goes to rent, explains Ashley’s common-law husband Terrel, who has an artificial hip and knee.

Following the family’s registration, the couple will have to wait several days to hear whether they’ll get their toys directly at the Christmas bureau or will be sponsored in the Adopt-A-Family program – where donors take on the responsibility of playing Santa.

Adopt-A-Family donors contact the registered family, ask what they would like or need, shop for them, and deliver newly bought toys before Christmas.

Sponsoring families are also asked to provide holiday meals for adoptees.

“We want to try to get sponsored,” says MacMillan, although Terrel adds any kind of help is appreciated.

Gilroy says that just over 500 families have offered sponsor-ship, but the need is greater than ever. About 800 families are registered.

Also sorely needed are gifts for teens, such as gift cards. This year, SCB has increased the eligible child age to 16, adding about 50 extra households to the system.

The bulk of the SCB business, of course, is toys. This year’s donations have come from individuals and fami-

lies as well as toy drives such as the Sasquatch Four Wheelers

Annual Toy Run (a good truckload); more than 420 toys from the Surrey Eagles’ Teddy Bear Toss; a donation of 40 bins from Surrey Traditional School; and $3,000 worth of toys bought new by The Money Tree.

The SCB also has a shelf lined with dozens of wooden toys donated by Guildford-area carver Bruno Schulz, and yesterday (Dec. 10), staff from Comfort Inn and Suites also dropped off a bus load of items from their Stuff the Bus campaign.

Gilroy says no contribution is too small.“We get these cheques for $20 written in a very shaky, elderly

hand, and you know that is as big to them as a corporate dona-tion,” Gilroy notes. “It’s maybe memories of themselves on assistance or hard times… people living through the ’30s and ’40s.”

“It’s a warm atmosphere and the people here are always really helpful,” says Patricia Moore, a single mom playing in the wait-ing room with Kaleb, a cooing eight-month-old in a stroller.

“And they always treat you with respect. They don’t look down on you.”

This is her fifth year as a client at the SCB. Moore’s 10-year-old son Griffin, a boy obsessed with Lego

and, separately, peanut butter, has been getting what he’s wanted for Christmas for each of those five years.

“He’s been very fortunate, whether we get sponsored or deal with the bureau itself. He always gets really cool Legos and he’s always really happy.”

Moore says she makes sure to tell her son where the gifts came from.

Donations to the Surrey Christmas Bureau continue to be accepted at any time. The Surrey Christmas Bureau is located at 7404 King George Blvd., in the building south of Boston Pizza. The registration deadline has been tentatively pushed forward to mid-December, but not waiting until the last minute is strongly recommended. “Vancouver wants to push their agenda and they have every right to do that. But I would suggest that the multi-billion-dollar project that they’re proposing is not going to fly with residents in Surrey – and Surrey residents will be contributing to it.”

It’s the first time Sur-rey representatives have taken a direct shot at Vancouver’s plans.

The two cities have sought to advance their rapid transit agendas in tandem without being drawn into a potentially divisive battle for scarce funding that could unravel the broad consensus at the regional mayors’ council in deal-ing with Victoria.

Watts spoke after Vancouver officials – led by Mayor Gregor Robertson – recently stepped up their pitch for rapid transit on the heav-ily congested Broadway corridor.

Vancouver planners recently concluded a bur-ied SkyTrain subway is needed to avoid paralyz-ing traffic on Broadway with street-level light rail trains.

Watts challenged Van-couver and UBC officials to consider other alterna-tives – such as following SFU’s lead and building new campuses that could serve UBC students on existing transit lines.

“UBC’s a small city and they built it at the end of a peninsula as far away as they could,” Watts said. “There has to be some critical thinking. Does it make sense to invest billions of dollars in infrastructure? Or does it make sense to have sattelite campuses in other areas of the region?”

Surrey is calling for three light rail lines – along 104 Avenue to Guildford, down King George Boulevard toward White Rock, and southeast along Fraser Highway towards Langley.

Watts said the price tag of about $2 billion is far less and covers more of the city than if more expensive SkyTrain was used.

There are four Sky-Train stations in North Surrey, but planners say a better network of rapid transit connecting town centres is critical to shap-ing future growth of the city, so developers build transit-friendly walkable neighbourhoods, not ones designed mainly for cars.

“We want at-grade rail to shape the city because we’re building the city,”

Watts said. “Which is a very different goal and measure from a city that’s already built out.”

Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs called Watts’ comments an “interesting discussion,” but added Vancouver hopes to make its ratio-nale better understood.

He said Vancouver council could make the argument that Surrey corridors should be built with B-Line bus service

first ahead of rail in light of current Surrey ridership, but it has not done so.

He also pointed out the debate comes as the “widest bridge in the world” opened, giving Surrey residents improved transporta-tion as part of the $3.3-billion Port Mann/Highway 1 project.

Meggs said more than half the ridership on the Broadway corri-

dor comes from outside Vancouver and that an underground SkyTrain to UBC is the most effective solution on a route where jammed buses pass up 2,000 rid-ers a day.

“We have more jobs on the Broadway corridor today than Richmond and Burnaby combined, both of which have LRT (light rapid transit).”

[email protected]

Surrey: Has ‘widest’ bridgeFrom page 1

Page 6: Surrey North Delta Leader, December 11, 2012

There’s a transit tussle brewing between Metro’s biggest cities. On one side – Vancouver, with Mayor Gregor Robertson and his ambi-

tious pitch for a nearly $3-billion SkyTrain system to the University of B.C. On the other – Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts and her long-standing battle

cry for better transit options for her burgeoning city.At issue is the next TransLink mega-project to go ahead (provided the regional

mayor’s council can reach a deal with the province for more funding options).Surrey is calling for three light rail lines – along 104 Avenue to Guildford, down

King George Bouelvard toward White Rock, and southeast along Fraser Highway towards Langley, at a cost of about $2 billion – far less than it would be if more expensive SkyTrain was used.

Watts is not impressed with Vancouver’s “grandiose” subway scheme.“I would suggest that the multi-billion-dollar project that they’re proposing is not

going to y with residents in Surrey...” at’s putting it mildly.Stinging from the news that a Highway 1 express bus over the new Port Mann

Bridge won’t stop in Surrey, and still smarting from years of substandard transit ser-vice south of the Fraser, Surrey residents – who receive about 90 to 95 cents worth of service from every dollar they contribute to TransLink through gas tax, property tax, and transit fares – won’t move to the back of the bus on this one.

Especially when there are more logical solutions.Watts’ idea to open satellite UBC sites rather than carve out a $3-billion SkyTrain

to the main campus at the farthest western edge of Vancouver is bang on.SFU’s Surrey location (the main campus is in Burnaby) – with its innovative

programs and savvy spot downtown (right next to SkyTrain) – is a lesson in success. Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Central City site has reached its capac-ity of serving 7,000 students and is looking to expand.

Within the next few years, Surrey will be the largest city on this side of the country – and the growth is not going to stop. Sinking $3 billion into a SkyTrain system in a city that is built out and already well served by transit is myopic and una ordable.

If Vancouver insists on Cadillac transit, then it must wait in line until a er Surrey gets its essential system.

On Friday, as the federal govern-ment was giving the green light to a Malaysian investment of billions more into northern B.C.’s lique ed

natural gas megaproject, Coastal First Nations chiefs held their quarterly board meeting in Vancouver.

ese are now the most powerful aborigi-nal leaders in North America, bankrolled by U.S. environmental groups and their wealthy charity foundation backers as guardians of the Great Bear Rainforest.

A major topic was the Haisla Nation, the Kitimat partner that abruptly quit its volun-tary association with the Haida, Gitga’at and other communities over its plans to develop LNG exports.

is discord comes at a bad time. Premier Christy Clark has bet heavily on LNG, not just for her government’s future, but the industrial and economic direction of the province for decades to come.

Initial press reports were misleading. One had it that Haisla Chief Councillor Ellis Ross, the B.C. government’s key ally on LNG, was

“buddying up” with the Harper government on the Enbridge oil pipeline proposed to go to Kitimat, in the heart of Coastal First Nations territory.

Not so. Both Ross and Coastal First Nations executive director Art Sterritt con- rmed to me that they remain sol-idly against the Enbridge proposal. e disagreement is over how to power the processing of LNG, which the Haisla are pioneering with provincial assistance.

Sterritt said the Haisla and the rest of the group were in agree-ment until a few weeks ago. e plan was to follow Clark’s solemn vow to make B.C. LNG the “greenest” in the world.

All parties acknowledge that some of B.C.’s shale gas will have to be burned to process and ship LNG to Asia. e initial idea was that one or two natural gas- red power plants would be built, eventually back-ing up wind, small hydro and other renew-able supplies. BC Hydro has 600 megawatts

available from its dams, which would require new transmission capacity up to Kitimat to help run the rst two LNG plants proposed in partnership with the Haisla.

en the play got bigger. e B.C. gov-ernment transferred Crown land on Douglas Channel to the Haisla for an LNG project planned by Shell, PetroChina and Korea Gas. And Sterritt said he started getting signals from Victoria that the industry doesn’t want to buy power from outside producers to drive LNG cooling and compression. Instead they wanted to power it directly with gas, using equipment called “mechanical drives” rather than

electrical drives. In a letter to Haisla members explaining

why he quit the Coastal First Nations, Ross said he was insulted by Sterritt’s comments that the Haisla were choosing “the dirtiest way possible” to ship LNG. Ross noted that emis-

sions would be about the same if gas is burned in the LNG plant or in a power plant nearby.

at’s true, but Sterritt points out a critical di erence. If LNG producers are allowed to use single-purpose mechanical drives, no renewable energy can ever be added. And as more LNG producers rush into B.C., reserves that would have lasted 75 to 100 years could be depleted in 30.

And when the gas is gone?“ ese big, hulking plants that are going to

be in Kitimat are just going to be sitting there, rotting,” Sterritt said. “It happens all over the world.”

B.C.’s clean energy plan envisions extending the BC Hydro grid, developing run-of-river and wind farms such as the big o shore pro-posal o Haida Gwaii, and ultimately a future beyond oil and gas.

Now, in their rush to develop LNG, Clark and Energy Minister Rich Coleman seem poised to abandon that strategy.

PKU families are grateful to reporter Evan Seal (The Leader, Nov. 27) for shedding light on the issue of public funding for approved medical treatments such as the drug Kuvan and medical foods for PKU patients like seven-month-old North Delta resident Alayna Lemky.

We are grateful that B.C. screens newborns to find the one in 15,000 with this lifelong, brain-threatening disorder and funds the necessary amino acid formulas (synthetic protein) required by PKU patients for proper growth and develop-ment.

Unfortunately, B.C. is behind other provinces in terms of funding low-protein medical foods for treatment, putting all of the 150 PKU patients in B.C. at greater risk of poor health outcomes. The specialized medical foods are regulated by Health Canada and cost about 10 times more

than regular foods. Now we have the first drug therapy, Kuvan,

and we understand B.C. was offered the best financial terms available to public payers. We still hope to see B.C. become a leader in being the first province to make this breakthrough treatment available to all PKU patients who respond to it.

The cost of the drug is weight-based and aver-ages $80,000 per patient per year for the 40-56 per cent of patients who could respond to the treatment. It will likely benefit about 60 people with PKU in B.C.

The B.C. Ministry of Health has demonstrated its senior officials do not understand the clear benefit of Kuvan, although published scientific research and case study evidence, accepted by government drug plans in many countries, proves

that it benefits some patients. Some patients in B.C. and across Canada are already seeing the benefits of this treatment to protect their brains.

We were dismayed this summer when discus-sions around funding took an abrupt rever-sal.  Our non-profit patient association was led to believe by the government that we could expect a positive announcement.

The B.C. government is standing in the way of improved care and the best possible outcomes for PKU patients. Isn’t the role of the Ministry of Health to protect the well-being of its citizens – regardless of the rarity of the disease they are facing?

Eliminate violence

against all

More light needed

it’s bitterly ironic that, from my observation of our environment (TV entertainment and news included), during the 1970s and ’80s, violence against females was considerably less evident than it has been during the last two decades, during which countless campaigns firmly denouncing violence against women have been prolific.

Perhaps society is going about the above-mentioned campaigns in an apparently futile manner.

Of course our academics have insisted on perceiving the violence-against-women issue within a two-dimensional confinement – not just ignoring but even silencing any idea that does not follow the conventional (gender) political and ideological perspective on the issue.

Why not consider an alternative idea and goal: As long as society tolerates, and even celebrates, vio-lence against males – for example, a guy “hilariously” being kicked in the groin by, say, his frustrated girlfriend – there will be socially despised and politically undesirable repercussions, such as violence against females.

It just may be folly for society to insist on the abolition of violence against girls/women while intently resisting the elimination of all vio-lence, including that in which boys/men are the victims.

re: “symPathy for all fatalities,” Letters, The Leader, Nov. 29.

While I wouldn’t doubt that Mr. Calder’s statement of sympathy is genuine, the overall tone of his letter appears to be slightly con-descending (or perhaps corrective in nature) comparing the media coverage given to Surrey RCMP Const. Adrian Oliver’s death “on the job” as being more important than that of a construction worker who loses his/her life on the job.

It also appears to me  that Mr. Calder is comparing apples to oranges. The reason media coverage is given to a fallen police officer is obvious. They’re frontline people, whereas construction workers are not.

By frontline, I mean police put their lives on the line for the public every time they step into uniform. I doubt a construction worker puts his life on the line for the public each time he picks up a tool.

That doesn’t mean construction workers

should receive less sympathy or media cover-age if they lose their life on the job, however, I believe the reason I stated speaks for itself.

Unfortunately, by nature, the public is more curious about police officers, firefighters, paramedics, etc., whereupon the media would tend to shine the spotlight more brightly than others.

so, sUrrey mayor Dianne Watts has come up with an alternative plan to get the money for the express bus stop: axe the improvements to the Newton Bus Exchange, which according to her we didn’t want anyway, (news to me) and use that money to build the infrastructure for a stop at Highway 1 and 156 Street.

Talk about throwing Newton under the bus again. This improvement has been talked about and delayed for years.

The current Newton exchange is a mess, prob-ably the most derelict exchange in the region.

Watts seems to have the idea firmly implanted in her mind that Newton is just “collateral damage” in her greater scheme of things.

This must not happen.

Helena van NesSurrey

Bus schedule is bizarre

i thinK it is totally bizarre not to have a bus running from Surrey across the new Port Mann Bridge so that we can travel to Coquitlam centre and east and west to Port Moody and Maple Ridge.

As it stands now, we have

to travel five miles out of our way to backtrack to these places. People from White Rock have to travel

east to Langley to head west to go across the bridge.

What about teens and potential jobs? Even

Greyhound only stops in Langley and on the other side of the bridge, which mean a $20 cab ride back to

Surrey.Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Commuters wait for their bus at the newton exchange. one letter writer disputes an argument that improvements aren’t needed at the exchange, while another says buses should run from surrey across the new Port mann bridge to relieve commuters taking roundabout routes.

i Use the Surrey Sport and Leisure Complex quite often for swimming and skating. Since it gets dark quite early now, I have a hard time finding my car in the parking lot as the cur-rent lights are not sufficient enough. It is also unsafe to have such a dark parking lot.

Furthermore, the parking lot markings have faded. You can’t even park your car properly as there are no markings on the ground to guide you.

Can the City of Surrey add more lights and repaint the parking lot?

Surrey rCMP have arrested a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run Dec. 3 at the intersection of 152 Street and 32 Avenue.

A 53-year-old Surrey man faces a charge of dangerous driving caus-ing bodily harm in con-nection with the incident,

in which two women were injured shortly before 8 p.m. while jog-ging in a crosswalk.

The man’s identity has not been released, pending a first court appearance set for May 13. Police said the arrest was made early Thursday morning at a residence not far from the crash scene, and a BMW X1

was seized as evidence.Media attention helped

police locate the suspect vehicle by triggering the memory of a person who was on scene.

Delta’s Shelley Lam-mers, 51, remains in stable condition at Royal Columbian Hospital, suf-fering from a concussion, fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, two broken verte-

brae and a lacerated liver. Her running partner

Nora Carlson suffered facial fractures, includ-ing a broken nose and fractured cheek, when the impact of the vehicle threw Lammers into her.

Both women were wearing reflective cloth-ing and headlamps at the time of the incident.

Carlson told Black Press she was relieved by word of the arrest.

“I’m delighted with the good news,” she said.

A traffic-camera video released by police shows the collision in the cross-walk by a white SUV. About 25 seconds after, the video shows a figure approaching the women on foot and leaning over them briefly before departing.

Investigation is ongo-ing and more charges are possible. Witnesses who have not yet spoken to the police are being asked to come forward.

Anyone with further information on the inci-dent is asked to contact Surrey RCMP Traffic Services at 604-599-0502, or  Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-222-TIPS, if requesting anonymity.

City of Surrey employ-ees have raised a record $234,000 for children, seniors and women in need through this year’s United Way campaign.

Mayor Dianne Watts and the City’s United Way committee handed over the cheque Wednes-day during a presenta-

tion at city hall.“Every year our

employees generously donate time and money to help our community, and I want to thank them for their dedica-tion...” Watts said. “The

money raised will make a real difference in the lives of children and seniors, as well as women fleeing domestic abuse.”

The Surrey Fire Service raised around half of the total donation and 90 per cent of members con-

tributed. City of Surrey employees have donated around $900,000 to United Way over the past four years.

For the second year, an original version of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas has been produced by Guildford Town Centre to raise local health care dol-lars.

Guided by Surrey art teacher Marc Pelech, a trio of students – Michele Miguel, Zoey Ahn and Seo-Yeun Kang – spent their summer working together to create 15 pieces of artwork for the book.

“I’m pleased by the high quality of artwork and delighted to lend my support towards this fundraising endeavour,” said Pelech.

The book is on sale at the shopping centre

for $10 from now until Dec. 22, with all proceeds to benefit the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation (SMHF).

“We are very excited about this project,” said Peggy White, Guild-ford’s general manager. “What a wonderful opportunity to show what great things our youth are doing, give them the chance to create artwork for their portfolios and at the same time support a worthwhile cause, everybody wins.”

The Guildford shop-ping centre has been a leader in supporting Surrey Memorial Hos-pital’s new children’s emergency room, said SMHF chair Ron Knight, adding the ER will treat more than 17,000 kids annually when it opens next year.

“This is a brilliant project that not only encourages the creativity of our youth but also supports the expansion of Surrey Memorial Hos-pital’s pediatric services.”

The book is available at centre court next to Santa’s Winter Won-derland at the shopping centre on 152 Street near 104 Avenue.

Delta resiDents jammed the gymna-sium of North Delta Secondary Wednesday to hear about MK Delta Lands’ plans for a controversial 89-acre mixed-use development proposed for Highway 91 and 72 Avenue, near Burns Bog.

On the table are plans for either 180,000 square feet of retail space and 1,750 residential apart-ment and townhouse units (Plan A); or 450,000 square fee of retail with 900 residential units (Plan B).

“Everyone’s thoughts are important to us,” said MK Delta Lands President Joanne Barnett. “If you’re here because you think this is the worst idea you’ve ever heard, your opinion is welcome.”

Barnett said an appli-cation would be going forward to Delta council based on the feedback from the open house.

Overall, the crowd of about 100 people received the presenta-tion politely. There was only one outburst after options “A” and “B” were presented when a person yelled out, “what about option C?” implying no development at all.

The site has tradition-ally been used for peat extraction and mining dating back to the Sec-ond World War, while the land is currently zoned industrial.

Project planner Mark Holland praised the Burns Bog Conservation Society for its efforts in raising awareness about the nearby bog’s recent designation as an inter-nationally recognized Ramsar Site for its value as a sensitive wetland.

Holland said the property owned by MK Delta Lands is in a “transition” stage between a “heather” and the peat bog that

makes up the majority of protected Burns Bog, but that everything they’re proposing is “extremely respectful of the ecosys-tem.”

Eliza Olson, president of the Burns Bog Con-servation Society, has been a vocal opponent of any development near the bog.

“If the land is drained, the bog will settle, and everything will sink. Even the highway could sink,” said Olson. “If you thought leaky condos were bad, try to live in a sinking one.”

Paul Skydt, environ-mental consultant on the project, said some people will never favour development, but others see it as an opportunity to create diverse housing in North Delta.

“MK Delta does not want to propose a development on the conservancy lands,” he said, adding it wants to retain as much tree canopy and wetlands as possible.

David Tuck, who has lived at 72 Avenue and 112 Street for 40 years, said he’s concerned that

already congested traffic will get worse.

“I can see the traffic lined up at 72nd Avenue at six-thirty in the morning,” he said.

Not everyone viewed the proposal negatively.

Kathleen Higgins, a resident on 108 Street, said she sees an opportunity to experi-ment with homes that are compact, ground-oriented, detached, and do not have strata fees.

She said they would appeal to seniors on a fixed income and first-time buyers.

They were winless in three games, but still earned two points in the Pacific Junior Hockey League standings.

The North Delta Devils began last week with a 2-2 tie in Ladner against the Delta Ice Hawks, then lost both games over the weekend. They fell 5-2 to the Aldergrove Kodiaks Saturday night in the Sungod Arena, and dropped a 2-1 overtime decision Sunday in Burnaby to the Grandview Steelers.

Sunday’s result allowed the Steelers to pull to within two points of North Delta in the Tom Shaw Conference standings. The Devils are in third place at 14-11-3-1 (win-loss-overtime loss-tied), but Grandview has played one less game.

Devils goaltender Tyler Read made 49 saves, including 13 in overtime, to help his team steal a point from the Ice Hawks. Delta never led in the contest, despite a 51-35 shots on goal

advantage.North Delta got goals from Arvin

Atwal on the power play in the second period, and Colin Catchpole midway through the third.

Both teams had 27 shots on goal Saturday in North Delta, but it was the Kodiaks coming out on top. The visi-tors led 4-0 before the game reached the midway point.

Matthew Painchaud with a power play goal in the second period and Tanner Lenting with an unassisted effort with less than 10 minutes to play scored for North Delta. Wade Moyls made 22 saves in the North Delta goal.

Details from Sunday’s loss to Grand-view were not available.

The Devils will have one opportunity next weekend to snap their three-game winless streak. Saturday night at 6:45 p.m. in the Sungod Arena, they host the Mission City Outlaws, a team which has just six wins in 26 games this season.

For the First time all season, the Surrey Eagles are losers of two consecutive games.

The Birds, who still sit in a second-place tie in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland Division, dropped both games of a Van-couver Island road trip on the weekend, losing 2-1 to the Victoria Grizzlies on Saturday night, before falling 5-2 to the Nanaimo

Clippers less than 24 hours later on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday in Victoria, the Eagles were stung by Grizzlies’ Fitzgerald triplets – Leo, Myles and Gerry – who com-bined for five points in the victory.

Gerry Fitzgerald scored both goals from the home team, including the winning goal, which came on the power play – Sur-rey had been whistled for a too-many-men

penalty – at the 8:31 mark of the third period.

Fitzgerald opened the scoring 3:22 into the first period, and the Victoria lead lasted until near the end of the second period, when Surrey forward Brady Shaw scored his team-leading 17th goal of the season when his slapshot from the right circle beat Victoria netminder Michael Stiliadis. Drew Best and Dan O’Keefe drew

assists on the play. Glenn Ferguson got

the start in net for Sur-rey, stopping 35 of 37 shots on net.

The following after-noon, the Eagles – who had won four straight and nine of 11 heading into the weekend – lost a rare second in a row Sunday, as the hometown Clippers got goals from five dif-ferent players en route to the win.

Demico Hannoun gave Surrey an early lead – his shot from the wing beat Nanaimo goalie Jayson Argue 38 seconds into the first period – but the Clips tied the game 10 minutes later on a goal from Michael Fretz.

Nanaimo scored twice more in the sec-ond period, while Sur-rey managed to bulge the twine just once more, when Trevor

Cameron scored his sixth goal of the year early in the third.

With the score 3-2, Nanaimo put the game out of reach when Kyle Kramer and Michael McNicholas scored 34 seconds apart midway through the period.

Surrey was not without chances to come back, however. The Peninsula squad had three breakaways in the final period, but Argue stopped all three.

“It was sloppier than we wanted it to be, that’s for sure,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach.

“But it was enter-taining … We needed a win, and scoring some goals was nice.”

Their Island road swing behind them, the Eagles now settle in for a three-game home stand, with two games coming before the Christmas break.

On Friday, the Eagles host the Powell River Kings, and Sunday afternoon will face the Prince George Spruce Kings at South Surrey Arena.

Goodman commits to SFU

Kendra Goodman of the Sur-rey Storm will be joining the Simon Fraser University Clan

(SFU) women’s softball team.“Kendra brings a wealth of

talent and potential to the Clan,” said SFU head coach Mike Renney of the left-hand hitting outfielder. “She comes from a quality program that will have no doubt prepared her for the challenges that university ball will bring.”

Last season an eventful one for Goodman, capturing second place at the 18-and-under Canadian championships, and finishing third at the provincial championships.

“Next year I just want to con-tribute. No matter what is asked of me I need to seize the oppor-tunity and make the most of it,” said Goodman. “I understand that not many athletes get the chance I have. I am really look-ing forward to taking my game to the next level under coach Renney.”
