Brief Description
The DLX has been developed as a powerful tool for local registration and evaluation of meter pulses. These can originate from energy meters, flow meters etc. The computed values are stored internally and can be transmitted to a remote central station via different interfaces and communication protocols.
The data interface serves for local data inquiry using appropriate PC software or for connecting an external modem. Using the modem interface it is possible to connect the internal modem to the telephone network in order to read out the billing values remotely by PC. The service interface is used for setting the computation parameters by PC. Read-out is possible, too.
For security reasons, the contents of the internal data buffers and a part of the device parameters can be saved on a standard PC-Card. This card can be read by any PC equipped with a PC-Card drive.

M-Bus Master / M-Bus Repeater
M-Bus System
The M-Bus system is a data transmission system for acquiring, evaluating, optimizing and controlling energy and process data. Modular components permit networking of a large number of different energy meters and computer-controlled terminals. The high degree of noise immunity, even in noisy environments, ensures reliably and error-free measured value transmission. Via modem interfaces, it is also possible to cover large distances to connect modular expansions or complex substation systems. The M-Bus system is the system preferred by operators supplying numerous consumers (e.g. industry and technology parks, trade fairs, building managements, etc.).
An M-Bus system consists of user specifically configurable and task specific system components and different repeaters that are grouped together in one or more segments via a simple twisted-pair cable. The structure of an M-Bus segment can be designed as a:
Star structure
Linear structure
Tree structure
Page 20 Survey of Products
Bär Industrie-Elektronik GmbH Siemensstr. 3 D-90766 Fürth Phone +49 911970590 Fax +49 9119705950
Each segment is terminated with a repeater and connects up to 250 devices/terminals. Repeaters can be cascaded, i.e. segments can brunch to lower level segments. The control centre of an M-Bus system is formed by the M-Bus master. It consists of an M-Bus repeater connected to a normal commercially available PC.
For the M-Bus-Connector exist 3 versions:
M-Bus Master / Repeater: for up to 250 devices/terminals (slaves); standard
M-Bus MiniMaster / MiniRepeater: for up to 10 or 20 devices/terminals (slaves)
ConvBox (M-Bus MiniMaster / MiniRepeater): for up to 20 devices/terminals (slaves)
Metcom T X4: for up to 25 devices/terminals (slaves)

Converter Box in control housing for wall mounting
Brief Description
The Converter Box is used to adapt physically two interfaces and to separate them galvanicly.
Two interface slots can be used to plug in the following modules as required:
M-Bus-interface: (passive or active) for connection to the M-Bus cable. The length of the cable can go up to 10km, depending on the cable and the number of devices connected to it. For small M-Bus
systems the converter box can also be used as M-Bus MiniMaster (M-Bus MiniRepeater) if not
more than 10 or 20 (option) devices are connected.
RS232-interface to connect a modem or a PC. The length of the cable must not exceed 15m.
RS485-interface (2 or 4 wires) for connection to a PC. The length of the cable must not exceed 1,2km and the maximum number of devices is limited to 32 within the bus segment.
20mA/CS-current loop (passive or active): for connection to a PC. The length of the cable must not exceed 1km. Up to 3 devices can be connected to the bus segment.
Fiber-optic cable (820nm) with ST or SMA-connector (special design).
RS232-interface for Elster EK88 / EK260 / DL240 (volume conversion devises).

1) The interfaces for RS485 are half duplex-interfaces which need a control signal to switch between „receive“ and „transmit“. The RTS-signal of the RS232-interface is used for this purpose. If there is no RTS-signal available, the change between reception and transmission is initiated by a timer. The time constant is adapted to the needed baud rate.
2) With no control signal available for the RS485-Module to switch from reception to transmission, a timer is used with a delay (ca. 36ms for 300 baud).
For small M-Bus systems the M-Bus MiniRepeater can also be used as M-Bus MiniMaster if not more
than 10 or 20 (option) devices are connected (with a maximum current requirement of 1.5mA each).

Indication elements
Six LEDs indicate the status of the interface modules:
2 green LEDs indicate the available power supply of 5V for each interface.
2 yellow LEDs for transmission (TxD, RxD) and 2 yellow LEDs for control signals (RTS, CTS). They indicate the signals of the relevant interface. Using the converter box as mini-master only the data indicator LEDs TxD and RxD are valid. The yellow LED (RxD) of interface 2 indicates a data request by a PC for devices connected to the M-Bus. The yellow LED (TxD) of interface 1 indicates data from the device to the PC.
There is an additional red LED on the module of the M-Bus Mini-Repeater. During power up it is switched on for a short time, afterwards it is only glowing with low volume under standard conditions. If the current of the M-Bus exceeds the limit of 30mA, the LED is glowing brightly. If the currents exceeds 100mA, the voltage of the M-Bus is cut-off and the red LED remains switched on. Then the Mini-Repeater tries periodically to switch on the voltage again, but this is only successful, if the current demand is lower than the current limit.

Field Control System (SCADA) General
BAER Field Control System (BFC System) is a simple and inexpensive SCADA (Supervisory Control and
Data Acquisition) System for recording, processing, transmission and delivery of signals. Typical
application is monitoring and control infrastructure of buildings, properties and local distribution networks.
A BFC System consists of these components:
1. Field Control Center (FCC): The FCC computer communicates constantly with the devices in field,
fetching messages and performing control tasks. The user interface of the FCC enables the user to
configure the system, shows the current system state and messages, and allows for manual and
automatic signal control.
2. Network (M-Bus or BFC-Bus): Field Control Center and devices are connected via a network according
to EN13757-2 (physical layer), a noise immune and polarity independent electrical 2-wire bus. Its
structure (star, tree, line) can be freely chosen, maximum line length is 20km. The bus-master device
is able to supply the devices in field with power over the communication line, so the devices don’t need
their own power source and the system can be operated independently of public power supply. In
addition, the bus-master serves as the entry point for communication with the network. Connection to
the FCC can be done either directly via its RS232 interface or via other means of communication (e.g.
LAN, internet, GPRS, powerline-carrier). As physical medium a standard two-wire cable (e.g. JYStY n
2 0,8mm or better) can be used.
3. Field Control Units (FCU): The devices in field are supplied via the bus. They are equipped with a real
time clock (precision 0.1 seconds), which is synchronized by the Field Control Center. The BFCI2
recording units register changes at their inputs (with debouncing) and save these in a log with
millisecond-precise time stamp to be fetched by FCC.

BFCI2
The BFCI2 is a FCU in DIN rail enclosure (width of two
modules=35mm) with two active digital inputs to receive
signals from passive contacts (e.g. relays). Debouncing time
is 20ms. Every change at the inputs causes a log message
with time stamp and new input state to be generated in the
internal buffer. The device holds all messages in a ring buffer
with a capacity of about 2000 entries. Furthermore every input
has a counter (9 digits) which is incremented at every rising
edge. It can optionally be stored in the ring buffer at a
programmable time interval.
The buffer retains its content at power loss.
Parameterization and remote query is done via bus interface
(according to EN13757.2).
BFCI10
The BFCI10 is a FCU in DIN rail enclosure (width of four
module=70mm) with ten active digital inputs to receive
signals from passive contacts (e.g. relays). Debouncing
time is 20ms. Every change at the inputs causes a log
message with time stamp and new input state to be
generated in the internal buffer. The device holds all
messages in a ring buffer with a capacity of about 2000
entries. Furthermore every input has a counter (9 digits)
which is incremented at every rising edge. It can optionally
be stored in the ring buffer at a programmable time interval.
The buffer retains its content at power loss.
Parameterization and remote query is done via bus
interface (according to EN13757.2).
Data storage
For every input it is possible to save these events:
Change of input state, optionally both edges or rising edge only
Change of pulse counter
Periodic recording of input state or counter value
Periodic recording can be combined with the other possibilities, e.g. one can save the state of an input at
every change and additionally every 5 minutes.
The device has a common message buffer for all inputs. The buffer is stored in non-volatile memory, it
retains its contents at power-loss. The internal clock is not buffered and must be set after every return of
power. Please note that no events can be saved in buffer as long as the clock is not set. This is
because every event needs a valid time stamp, which is not available when the clock was not set before.

DCFSYN
DCF77 Radio Clock Receiver
Brief Description
The relay DCFSYN serves for synchronization of time-controlled devices with the time information sent by German DCF77 transmitter in Frankfurt/Main. When the signal is correctly received, the relay closes for the first second of every hour. Without reception no pulse is generated.
The front panel provides three LEDs:
“Antenna” flashes according to the received DCF signal (once per second)
“Sync/Error” lights permanently, if the time of the previous minute has been correctly received. It flashes, if an error occurred. Note: The time information needs one minute to be sent. So it is possible that the LED flashes for up to two minutes, even if the reception is OK.
"Relay" lights while the output relay is closed. (E.g. for one second once per hour, if no error occurred.)

Warning and Monitoring Systems
WD-USB (Watchdog-Box)
The Watchdog-Box WD-USB can be used to check on
programs if they are still running and being “active” or if
they have been stopped by internal or external events.
The special customer advantage is to be able to
control a specific program of being “alive” independent
of the operating system. So a “hung up” program can
be easily and fast detected even if the operating
system is still working correctly.
Functionality
The communication to the Watchdog-Box uses a USB serial interface (according to specification USB 1.1,
Type B) via a virtual COM interface. The program to be checked sends periodically the message “Output
relay or digital on for x minutes”. If this signal is missing for a time longer than a customizable time (x
minutes) the Watchdog creates a programmable off impulse at output (relay or digital). This signal can be
used to “reset” the computer. Alternatively, the potential free contact can be parameterized as alarm
output
Example for using of WD-USB box with SIGLON communication server:

CWD01 (Computer Watchdog-Box)
The Computer Watchdog-Box CWD01 can be used to
check on programs if they are still running and being
“active” or if they have been stopped by internal or
external events/errors. The customer advantage is to
be able to control a specific program, independently of
the underlying operating system. This way a “hung up”
program can be easily and quickly detected even if the

Computer Watchdog-Box turns off the supply voltage
of a connected device (e.g. embedded PC) if it has not
received a trigger message for an adjustable period of
time, causing a system reset. This monitoring assures
the correct function of the device (watchdog
functionality).
Functionality
The Computer Watchdog-Box connects the input voltage (11 to 32VDC) immediately after power-on to the
output voltage and initializes its internal timer using the setting of the left coding switch (Tstart). If it does
not receive a trigger message in the specified time, it turns off the voltage at Vout for the specified off-
time, given by the right coding switch (Toff). Every trigger message contains the duration of the new
timeout T in seconds. This value is loaded into the internal timer at every correctly received message.

MSR10
Memory Card Reading Module
Brief Description
The MSR10 reader makes it possible to load data from memory cards into PCs over a serial interface (V.24). The MSR10 Memory Card reader distinguishes itself from all other card readers that are currently available through the two different transfer protocols that are used: 1) Standard protocol creates the possibility of reading in only a specified number of bytes from the
requested memory card (for copying the contents of the memory card to PC hard disk) address and allows for the formatting of the memory card (Bär-protocol for DATA FW4 and DLC 32)
2) SCTM-protocol - enables the reading and formatting of memory cards This unit is capable to read and format memory cards with a capacity of up to 8 MByte (JEIDA/ PC-card
standard).
Features
The following stored information can be requested from memory cards that come from DATA FW units:
The specification of the periodic buffer (PP-01 or PP-02) with measurement values (load-profile).
The last 100 entries in the spontaneous buffer (e.g. voltage interruption, parameter changes, etc.)
The values that were current at the time that the memory card was removed from the card reader in the following areas: Date and time, the most recent working values, the performance values.
depending on the software version of the originating unit of the memory card: The outstation location number or the unit identification, the working values at the time that the memory card was installed in the unit, the reference constants.
The time of the last measuring period, the most recently set baud rate for requests through the SCTM-protocol.
The measuring period, the status of the unit, information about the radio clock was turned on.
The total capacity of the periodic buffer on the memory card in measurement periods, the length of a measurement period, entry bytes, the contents of periodic buffers 01 and 02.

RS-BOX
Laboratory Adapter
Brief Description
The RS-Box is a laboratory adapter for tracking-down problems that occur in RS232 / V.24 interfaces. It also offers protection for the host computer / PC against voltage surges so that damage to interface cards can be avoided.
Features
The RS-Box has two identical function blocks which provide the following:
a secure 9-pole connection (to be screwed-in) on the PC.
a separate ground attachment for connection to the PC housing.
a 9-pole and a 25-pole SUBD plug terminal for connection to the test unit.
8 red and 8 green LEDs display the conditions in the signal connections
The LEDs draw their current direct from the signal connections (the RS-Box has no net connections and needs no battery). Low current light emitting diodes are used in order to keep the power-draw to a minimum. The LEDs are bright enough so that the conditions on the respective connections can be quickly and reliably recognized. The draw on the signal connections is approx. 2mA (with a 12-volt signal voltage).
9 posts for connection of oscilloscopes or meters.
8 4-pole jumper connection for special wiring or for bridges.
The upper 2 and the lower 2 rows are switched in parallel. This allows not only for the creation of simple RTS-CTS bridges, but also of DTR-DSR-DCD bridges through the use of short-circuit jumpers.
Overvoltage protection (through zener diodes) limits the signal voltage to about 13V.
Technical Data
Housing: desktop case
Dimensions: approx. 199mm 157.5mm 100mm (L W H)
Voltage supply: not required
