Mary Susanna Lunsford was 16 and she kept a diary during the journey with her sister, two brothers and her mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Catherine Mathews Lunsford. Journal entries note time together sewing and quilting with her mother and sister. Can you just imagine all the fabric lovingly stitched into garments and quilts for their families, and the splendid bag of scraps each accumulated?!
