Cloud Computing Solution GuideSUSE Public Cloud Service Provider Program Overview

The SUSE Public Cloud Program provides an easy way for cloud service providers to increase revenue by offering the proven enterprise performance of SUSE products in the cloud.

SUSE in the Public CloudSUSE has a twenty year history of working with partners to deliver enterprise-class open source solutions for organizations around the world. With the SUSE Public Cloud Program, Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) can offer customers greater assurance that they are running on an enterprise platform that has been proven in the world’s largest and most demanding data centers. This allows enterprises to run development and test instances on the same platform on which they likely deploy production work-loads in their own data centers. Enterprises are also more likely to deploy longer-running production workloads on a proven enterprise Linux distribution such as SUSE Linux Enterprise, thus generating larger and more consistent revenue streams for cloud providers.

The SUSE Public Cloud program offers CSPs a suite of open source products for use in the public cloud with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server as the foundation. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server provides superior reliability, performance, security and Windows interoperability. Furthermore, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server has more certified Linux applications than any other op-erating system. As part of the SUSE Public Cloud Program, CSPs

can deliver a robust, fully supported data center experience with the flexibility of pay-as-you-go, on-demand infrastructure.

SUSE Public Cloud ProgramThe SUSE Public Cloud Program enables CSPs to offer SUSE products in the cloud with pay-as-you-go pricing. The CSP acts as a reseller of SUSE products, using time increments of one hour, one month or one year. The CSP will report usage back to SUSE on a monthly basis, and then SUSE will invoice the CSP on a quarterly basis for the past three-month’s usage. Maintenance for SUSE images is provided through a proxy server hosted in the CSP’s infrastructure, and SUSE offers several support options that allow the CSP to provide technical support to end customers.

Products Available in the SUSE CSP ProgramSUSE products which are on the SUSE Public Cloud Service Provider price list and, therefore, are available to use for cloud infrastructure or resell in the public cloud are:

Partner with SUSE in the Cloud SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server powers thousands of organizations around the world across physical, virtual and cloud environments. As these businesses look to move more of their mission-critical workloads to the cloud, they require the same stable, secure and supported platform that they rely on in the data center.

Licensing and Pricing The SUSE Public Cloud Service Provider Agreement provides the licensing terms between the CSP and SUSE. The CSP’s cus-tomers are bound by the End User License Agreement (EULA) in the SUSE image. The SUSE Public Cloud Service Provider pric-ing model follows a pay-as-you-go approach. SUSE offers two categories of cloud pricing: 1) for SUSE product images hosted on the CSP’s infrastructure and 2) for SUSE products used in managed hosting environments.

Bring Your Own Subscription SUSE allows customers to bring their existing subscriptions to SUSE certified public clouds. To become a SUSE certified public cloud, please contact SUSE at: [email protected]

SupportSUSE offers several support options to ensure Cloud Service Providers can deliver their desired level of service to their cloud customers. The CSP is responsible for the direct interface with the CSP’s cloud customers. SUSE support is provided directly to the CSP and is available in two ways:

1. Through the SUSE Support Center when the CSP sells Priority subscriptions

2.Premium-level support, which can be purchased by the CSP via a Technology Partner Support (TPS)1 agreement and used in conjunction with Basic or Priority subscriptions

How to Report Usage CSPs are billed quarterly for subscriptions sold in the last quar-terly period. At the end of every month the CSP provides to SUSE a report summarizing the number of units sold. At the end of every quarter, the CSP provides to SUSE a quarterly usage report, which is used for the billing process. The report format is defined in the Cloud Service Provider Agreement (CSPA) and consists of simple and easy-to-fill-out forms.

Technical InformationThe two key technical items that need to be completed to get a SUSE image running on the CSP’s infrastructure are the im-plementation of the update framework and the creation of the SUSE image.

Update Framework SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is an enterprise Linux distribution providing enhanced stability and robustness versus community distributions. Value to the customer is provided by the support offering from SUSE and the maintenance of software versions.

The SUSE public cloud architecture design includes the use of the Subscription Management Tool (SMT)2 server from SUSE. This server runs as a virtual machine inside the cloud and allows the CSP to set up a local mirror of the SUSE Customer Center (SCC) update repositories with only a one time registration. This allows newly launched instances of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server to access the repositories without having to enter an entitlement: that is, newly launched SUSE instances simply register with the SMT server. If the CSP spans multiple regions, one SMT server is required per region to reduce network latency across regions.

Access must be controlled so that only en-titled SUSE instances that are provided by the CSP or by SUSE (in the Bring Your Own Subscription model) can reach the update repository.

Image CreationIn most cases, the Cloud Service Provider will offer a preconfigured SUSE image. The image creation process is dependent on the CSP´s requirements since an image may include additional components as de-fined by the cloud infrastructure such as metering, billing, management and other capabilities. SUSE offers two image cre-ation methods: the SUSE Studio™ image creation and deployment tool3, and the KIWI Image System4.

SUSE Certified Public CloudPublic cloud certification is essential to achieve the reliability and robustness required by customers who are running SUSE Linux products in your cloud. SUSE Certified Public Cloud status ensures your customers that your cloud infrastructure has been validated to work properly with SUSE products, and that SUSE products are well supported and maintained. SUSE Certified Public Cloud status a pre-requi-site for participation in the SUSE Bring your Own Subscription program. For more in-formation, contact SUSE at: public.cloud@ suse.com

SUSE Public Cloud Operations ServicesWith the SUSE Public Cloud Operation Ser-vices Program, SUSE takes on the respon-sibility of creating and maintaining SUSE products in your cloud infrastructure so that you can focus on your business. For more information, contact SUSE at: public. [email protected]

Steps to Get StartedThe following steps must be completed before SUSE products can be made avail-able in a CSP’s public cloud:

1. Cloud Service Provider Agreement (CSPA) execution

2.Initial license generation—SUSE provides one license key per SUSE product to be resold in the cloud

3.CSP completes update and mainte-nance channel provisioning

4.CSP completes image creation5.Image maintenance (ongoing)
