UPS’s alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet includes over 5,000 vehicles. Our “rolling laboratory” has traveled more than 350 million miles worldwide since 2000. And we’ve set a goal – 1 billion miles by the end of 2017.

Go the extra mile? Not if we don’t have to.

Our onboard telematics systems help us run at peak performance by monitoring vehicles and driving behaviors, and providing optimized routing instructions to reduce miles, fuel and time. UPS ORION, our on-road integrated optimization and navigation system, helped us save an estimated 14,000 metric tonnes of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and 1.5 million gallons of fuel in 2014.

Planes, trucks and trains — more modes for less carbon

By shifting from air to ground and ground to rail whenever possible – without risking deadlines – our ability to fluidly move between transportation modes prevented absolute emissions of 17.1 million metric tonnes of CO2e from customer shipments and cargo from 2008 to 2013.

A smarter strategy for aircraft fuel reduction

At the same time we’re flying the miles necessary to meet customer demands, we’re finding ways that reduce the fuel required to do it. From simple measures such as cleaner engines and drag-reducing winglets and coatings to complex computer-optimized arrivals, departures and flight plans, UPS leverages the most advanced techniques and technologies available.

UPS was the first in the industry to develop environmentally-preferred packaging, designed in partnership with The Environmental Defense Fund in 1998. Boxes and tubes are made from up to 90% post-consumer content (PCC), and express envelopes from up to 100% PCC, reducing paper use and saving trees. In addition, 78% of our purchased packaging and paper products globally in 2013 were recycled materials.

UPS continues to expand its e-waste recycling program. From 2000 to 2013, we recycled over 37 million pounds of items such as computers, servers, keyboards, telephones, printers and electronic media.

We report using Global Reporting Initiative G4 – comprehensive framework, the highest level. GRI is the most widely used sustainability reporting framework in the world, and UPS has reported at the highest level for three years in a row.

For two years in a row, we exceeded our goal of reducing carbon intensity by 10%, while delivering more goods for our customers. So we set a new goal of reducing our carbon intensity from transportation by 20% by the end of 2020.
