SUSTAINABILITY& NET ZEROBUILDING DESIGN SERVICES Ankrom Moisan Architects | Power Correction SystemsAugust 3rd 2011
BRIEF HISTORYAnkrom Moisan Associated Architects was formed in 1983 by Stewart Ankrom and Tom Moisan to provide integrated architectural and interior design services to private sector developers. The philosophy of Ankrom Moisan is quite simple: serve the client. As a client-centered practice we are focused on understanding our client’s business and helping them achieve success. Our portfolio includes: housing, hospitality, senior housing, retail, commercial office, places of worship, healthcare and public places.
SIGNIFICANT RESOURCESWith offices in Portland and Seattle and a staff of 130, we have the resources of a large firm, but the open, collaborative culture of a small firm. Our services include Architectural Design, Interior Design, Sustainable Design, and Urban Design / Planning. The resources we have available to our clients include an Interior Design department, a green team with extensive expertise in sustainable design and an Identity Design department.
OUR FIRM STRUCTUREOur firm structure is organic and entrepreneurial, allowing us to quickly adapt to changing market conditions and grow our expertise. Instead of an organizational chart, we have an organizational metaphor—the tree—which represents how we are structured. The trunk of the tree is the management team, which provides a connection to the firm’s history (its roots) and feeds resources (staff and project support) and nutrients (information) to the rest of the firm. The branches are the architectural and interior design teams, which produce the fruit of our labor.
DESIGN WITH PURPOSEAnkrom Moisan’s mission is Design with Purpose: honoring our client’s goals and improving people’s lives. Design is a powerful tool, used with the right spirit we believe it can help our clients achieve their vision and improve people’s lives. The best design balances idealism with common sense, innovation with proven experience. It embraces sustainable design practices while keeping an eye on our client’s budget. Ultimately it is a tool to create positive experiences for the people who inhabit and interact with the buildings we design for our clients.
TEAM APPROACHThe office is organized in teams tailored to each project, we give every client dedicated, personalized attention. Each team is formed to include all of the disciplines and expertise necessary for success, whether it is interior design, sustainable design, urban design, graphic design, planning or architecture.
Ankrom Moisan
Ankrom Moisan is committed to sustainability principles that promote responsible design decisions and sound business strategies for our clients.

Project TeamRepresentative Projects
Independence Station, Independence, Oregon. Principal-in-Charge of this mixed use project that is designed to achieve the highest LEED Platinum score on record, as well as Net Zero Energy and Water use. The project will require no grid power, having its energy supplied by on-site bio-diesel fired co-generation plant, geothermal heat pumps and a large PV installation (no fossil fuels in the project). The design includes in-floor hydronics for space heating and cooling, which utilizes off-peak thermal storage and captured waste heat from the bio-diesel generators. It also includes a rainwater harvesting system used for toilet flushing, some green roof areas, a range of recycled content/regional/low emitting materials, and much more.

Example Technical ProposalJewish Educational Trade School, Granada Hills, CA
The following Technical Proposal was recently prepared for the Jewish Educational Trade School’s multi-building expansion project, in the Los Angeles area. This provides an example of the Sustainability and Net Zero Energy and Water Use building design services we are experts in. This proposal includes only a partial listing of the strategies, technologies and evaluation techniques we utilize in this work, as it was tailored specifically for the JETS project. Our expertise is specifically applicable to the following goals, to help promote interest in NZE design and achieve more completed NZE project examples in California:
• Assist end users to achieve Net Zero Energy & Water building design
• Evaluate technologies which help achieve NZE&W and highly sustainable buildings
• Select technologies suitable for specific projects in specific California climates
• Encourage developers to establish demonstration facilities and projects
