Based on his assessment, “environmental and social
conditions – and not just the price – have a role to
play. Witzenmann recognises this, which is great!”
Sustainability is the latest buzzword that everyone is
talking about. Which aspects do you find particularly
important?
Itisaquestionofensuringthatweasasocietyareabletore-
maininexistenceoverthelongterm;firstandforemost,that
weprotecttheenvironmentonwhichwedepend,thatweare
abletocreatelivingconditionsthatarefitforeveryoneonthis
planet,andthatourdescendantsarenotworseoffthanwe
aretoday.Thesearedemandinggoalsandoneswhichweare
alongwayfromachieving.Butweareworkingonit...
How much work is still to be done in Germany and in
Baden-Württemberg?
Sustainabilityisastatethatwecanactuallyonlyassessin

trialisednationinthecontextoftheseglobalchallenges?
Knowledge,innovations,technologicalprogress–allmade
possiblethankstoourhighlydevelopedinfrastructureandthe
socialstabilityinourcountry.
Companies need to operate with a focus on profit.
Measures for improving sustainability are renowned
for swallowing up a lot of money and for restricting
growth. Is that really the case?
No,notnecessarily.Growthisanaturaloccurrenceand
doesn'thavetobeatoddswithsustainability.Thewholeof
natureisconstantlychangingasaresultofgrowthprocesses.

hasbeenattheexpenseoftheenvironmentandwasmore
orlessachievedbydestroyingtheearth'snaturalcapital.Itis
thereforeimportanttostriketherightbalance.Gluttonyand

The need to act sustainably has been recognised by
western industrialised nations. But what is the situation
globally? How can we reconcile emerging economies
aspirations for growth with sustainable business prac-
