INTRODUCTION:● It is a set of site specific ranching and farming practices

designed to meet current and future needs for food, fiber, energy, and ecosystem services including, but not limited to, soil conservation, clean water and biodiversity.

● Sustainable agriculture emphasizes production and food systems that are profitable, environmentally sound, energy efficient and improve the quality of life for both farmers and the public.

SUCCESSES:- abundant food supply in the developed

world

- fresh fruits and vegetables available year-round

- cheap and accessible food

- non cereal crops such as coffee, tea, cocoa, and spices easily available around the world.

- mechanization produces high labor efficiency

- use of chemicals has improved yields.

- availability of agricultural inputs for quick solutions to production problems.

FALIURES- continuing soil loss

- food safety concerns (mad cow disease, food poisoning - outbreaks, antibiotic resistance, toxins and pesticides)

- water pollution, air pollution (& odors), habitat loss, water depletion

- continuing hunger and simultaneous rise of obesity in developed worlds.

- failing farms, economic uncertainty and stress

-farm accidents, chronic diseases linked to agricultural chemicals

-reliability on fossil fuels - global warming

- Provides a secure living to other workers in the food system

- Provides access to good food for all

ENVIROMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

- Preserve the quality of soil, water, and air.

- Cooperates with and is modeled on natural systems.

SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY

- Good for families.

- Supports communities.

- Fair to all involved.

HOW TO FARM SUSTAINABLY:

- Plant many different crops near each other so that a pest can’t destroy an entire crop.

- Waste products should be composted and used to replace nutrients in the soil.

- Crops are rotated to preserve the nutrients in the soil.

- Use cover crops and green manure and/or animal manure to build soil quality and fertility.

- Integrate crop and livestock production.

- Use of Agroforestry.

- There should be efficient use of water and minerals.

- Do not over exploit the natural resources.

- Do not use artificial chemicals.

- Publicize your products.

CONCLUSION- Sustainable agriculture is the

future

- Farmers and consumers are needed to be educated on this topic.

- Government policies and strategies are needed to be modulated in order to make sustainable agriculture a reality.

- If we wish the life on earth to last longer, sustainable agriculture has to be employed.
