ICAO'S Strategic Objectives

S u s t a i n a b l e A v i a t i o n F u e l sSustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is the name given toadvanced aviation biofuel types used in jet aircraft and certifiedas being sustainable by a reputable independent third-party

1. All jet fuel has to meet strict specifications, with ASTMproviding the most recognized standard, including for SAF. Oncecertified as SAF, it can be used directly (at a blendingpercentage) in aircraft, and in an airport's pipe network.

2. The potential for reducing GHG emissions differs dependingon the raw material used, with values ranging from 65% to 85%reduction potential with respect to conventional Jet A1.

3. Achieving the GHG emission reduction targets proposed by the aviation industry and organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) will require a significant increase in the production and consumption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels.

S u s t a i n a b l e A v i a t i o n F u e l s1. All jet fuel has to meet strict specifications, with ASTM providing the most recognized standard, including forSAF. Once certified as SAF, it can be used directly (at a blending percentage) in aircraft, and in an airport's pipenetwork.

1. FT-SPK (Fischer-Tropsch Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene): the maximum blending ratio 50%.

2. FT-SPK/A: the maximum blending ratio 50%.

3. HEFA (Hydro Processing of Esters of Fatty Acids and Free Fatty Acids): The maximumblending ratio is 50%.

4. HFS-SIP (Synthetic Isoparaffins from Hydroprocessed Fermented Sugars): The maximum blending ratio is 50%.

5. ATJ-SPK (SPK from the Alcohol to Jet): The maximum blending ratio is 50%.

6. Co-processing: The maximum blending ratio is 5%

7. Catalytic Hydrothermolysis Synthetic Kerosene (CH-SK): The maximum blending ratio is 50%.

The Von der Leyen Commission (2019-2024) is thecurrent College of European Union Commissionerswhich took office on 1 December 2019. Itspresident is Ursula Von der Leyen, who chairs 26other commissioners (one from each of the statesthat make up the European Union)

European Green DealUrsula von der Leyen, President of the EuropeanCommission, presented the EU Green Deal at the start ofher presidency, a plan that includes fifty concrete actionsto combat climate change:

• The aim is to make Europe the first climate-neutralcontinent by 2050 - for which a 90% reduction intransport emissions is mentioned as necessary by thatdate.

• It is mentioned that the European Union should, inparallel, significantly increase the production anddeployment of sustainable transport fuels - necessaryto achieve the first point.

Many of these measures will be developed in the comingmonths, including the possibility of establishing amandate - or use/production obligation - for SustainableAviation Fuels at European level, which some individualcountries are already doing or willing to do.

ARTEMISA (2019)In view of the unquestionable interest of MSW as a rawmaterial for the production of sustainable aviation fuels in themid-term, Artemisa was created in 2019 promoted by theEASA - State Agency for Air Safety - to analyze the feasibilityand establish a national implementation plan for SustainableAviation Fuels (SAF) from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).

The stated objectives are as follows:

1. Identify available technologies and their owners (e.g.Fulcrum, Velocys, Abengoa)

2. Establish a Development Plan with milestones, times andneeds

3. Identify potential investors in the conversion facilities(For example Urbaser, Ferrovial, Abengoa, ACS, etc)
