    CONCEPT OF SUSTAINABLE

    LIFESTYLE

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    4/34

Concept for Sustainable Lifestyley Sustainability is a macro concept that applies more broadly to entire systems

and infrastructures. The term can be somewhat elusive, but can becharacterized as it spans a multitude of topics. Green, on the other hand, is amicro concept. We deal with green in our everyday lives with things likeclothing, food, transportation.

    y

Green is a pretty easy concept to understand in part because its relative andtangible. It is measured on a scale from dirty to clean or eco friendly vs.traditional product. Also, tangible eco actions are oftentimes associated withbeing green, as in recycling.

So, what is green living and is it the same as a sustainable lifestyle? Livinggreen or a sustainab

le lifestyle is a primary focus on eco awareness with actionstowards reducing ones carbon footprint, managing waste, and embracingsustainability concepts in decision making.

y A sustainable lifestyle often means different things to different people. Forthose well versed in sustainability concepts, a sustainable lifestyle may be verydifferent compared to someone just beginning to make sustainable lifechanges.

    6/34

    Definition

Sustainable development is maintaining a delicate balance

between the human need to improvelifestyles and feeling ofwell-being on one hand, and preserving natural resources and

ecosystems, on which w e and future generations depend.

    Whatare strategies for sustainable development?

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    9/34

What does this mean in practice?

y An effective strategy for sustainable developmentbrings together

the aspirations and capacities of government, civil societyandthe private sector to create a vision for the future, and to worktacticallyand progressivelytowards it. It identifies and builds on'what works', improves integration between approaches, andprovidesa framework for making choices where integration isnot possible.

y Focusing on what is realisticallyachievable,an effective strategywill benefit from comprehensive understanding, but will notbeparalysed by planning overlycomprehensive actions on manyfronts at once.As a process of practical institutional changeaimed primarilyat mainstreaming sustainabilityconcerns, thestrategy is likelyto be focused on onlya few priority objectives.

y Astrategy for sustainable development will rarely implyinitiating acompletely new or stand-alone strategic planningproject. Rather,a number of initiatives, taken together, couldmeetthe definition and the principles. Bringing existinginitiatives closer to

Sustainable living roomUnplug Our ElectronicsAll of our electronic doodads suck up phantom energywhen we aren't using them, sitting in a standby mode justwaiting to be used. Stop their greedy sucking by goinggreen in our living room and unplugging the TV and VCR,

as well as other gadgets, when you are finished usingthem.

    Recycle our electronics

When we dump electronics into a landfill we contribute tochemical build ups in the land that don't break down overtime.

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    12/34

Some of the chemicals found in TV's that go into landfillsinclude lead and mercury, which can cause brain damage

and in the case of mercury, death. If the device still workssell it on Craigslist or give it away. If not, dispose of itproperly with a recycling company, which may cost a littlemoney, but will save you the guilt of seriously polluting theEarth.

    Invite the light in

There's no reason to have lights on during the day timeunless it is the dead of a very overcast winter. Natural lightis abundant, clean, and brings out color beautifully. If you

have windows, open up those shades! If you plan to dosome remodeling in your home go green in your livingroom by installing skylights.

    BuyFurniture That Will Last

The Amish have a saying "Use it up, wear it out, make it

    work, or do without!" The same applies to our furniture.Going green in the living room means not filling uplandfills, and there's a ton of great used furniture out there.Whatever we buy, make sure it will last us at least the nextten years. Is the upholstery out of date? Try a slip cover;

they're a cheap way to get a "new" couch.

    Buy Houseplants

Houseplants not only make lovely decorations, they

also provide us some very handy favours. Besidesturning carbon dioxide into oxygen, some plants alsoleach nasty chemicals out of the air. Both aloe Vera andficus plants take formaldehyde out of the air, and thespider plant helps remove carbon monoxide.

    Renewable Flooring

If we are remodeling or building fresh, consider renewable

flooring such as bamboo. It is easier to clean than carpet, prevents dust mites (which love to live in carpet), and is arenewable resource that grows quickly and is easy tomaintain. Bamboo may cost more than cheap carpet, butgoing green in the living room is also about longevity, and

bamboo floors will last many years after carpet wears out.

    InsulateWell

A well insulated home is a home that eats up less energy inheating and cooling. This is because insulation traps warmair in the winter and cool air in the summer. Our localutility district may even help us go green in our living roomby discounting or subsidizing costs to insulate our home.

Sustainable KitchenInstall operable windows and skylights.

Windows and skylights are the most energy-efficientmethod of clearing vapors and indoor air toxins from ourkitchen. With enough openings, placed for cross and stack

ventilation, we can run our exhaust fan only to evacuate theheaviest cooking odours.

    Use ahigh-efficiencyceiling fan.

A ceiling fan boosts natural ventilation by helping to moveair through the space, and it uses less energy and is quieterthan an exhaust fan.

Locate work surfaces near windows or skylights.

Daylight is the highest quality lighting, and its free. With

work surfaces near windows or skylights, we wont need touse artificial lighting during the day, so we will save energy. We will also have views and a connection to the outside.

Consider an on-demand hotwater pumping system.

On-demand hot water pumping systems deliver electricallyheated water while waiting for hot water from the heater toreach the faucet. A whole-house recirculating hot waterloop is inefficient for delivering hot water quickly.

If our refrigerator is more than10years old, replace it.

Just do not put that old refrigerator in the garage and turn

it onwe will only add to your energy bill. Old refrigeratorscan account for about 15 percent of a homes energy demand; of all household appliances, they use the mostenergy.

Rightsize our appliances.Huge appliances use more energy and take up morespacewe will build, heat, and cool additional squarefootage to accommodate them. If we dont need the extracapacity, dont buy it. New compact, high-efficiencyappliance models can save our money and space.

GoGreen in your bedroomy Step 1: Change your sheets

When its time to buy new bedding, look for sheets made fromorganic or chemically untreated cotton, hemp, or bamboo, whicheven big wholesale chains now carry. And make sure your nextmattress is made from organic cotton, wool, or natural latex or

    rubber.y Step 2: Buy pillows

At night, rest your head on a pillow filled with natural stuffing, like feathers and down, natural latex, organic cotton or wool, buckwheat or millet hulls, or recycled polyester fill.

    y

Step 3: Find old furnitureFind old furniture at f lea marketsits usually higher qualitythan modern stuff at comparable prices. Almost any piece canlook brand new with a little work

GoGreen in your Bedroomy Step 4: Use green paint

Go with paint marked low- or no-VOCs, meaning they dont release thefumes from volatile organic compounds.

y Step 5: Ditch wall-to-wall carpetingDitch the wall-to-wall carpeting in favor of wood f loors (recycled wood,

preferably) and throw rugs made of natural fibers like sisal, bamboo, sea grass, and organic cotton.

y Step 6: Dim all the lightsReplace the light bulbs in your bedroom with energy-saving low-wattcompact fluorescent ones, and install a dimmer.

y Step 7: Sleep in cotton

Sleep in organic cotton nightwear and you wont spend your nightsfeeling guilty about wearing PJs made from pesticide-laden cottontreated with formaldehyde. Now enjoy sweet, green dreams.

GoGreen in your OfficeUse Digital Storage Solutions to cut paper and reduce clutter.

y One 100 Megabyte zip drive can store the contents of a four-drawer filingcabinet and one CD-ROM can hold nearly a roomful of paper! It is also moreconvenient to store disks and CD-ROMs than roomfuls of paper.

Buy Energy Star qualified electronic products.y Energy Star computers, printers and other business machines power down

when not in use. They can help you conserve up to 75% of your electricitycompared to standard models. By automatically switching equipment to "sleepmode" when not in use

    Use compact fluorescentbulbs.y

Switching from incandescent bulbs to energy-efficient compact fluorescentsdelivers outstanding efficiency -- up to 75% energy savings for Energy Starqualified lights. That translates into significant cost savings as well as wasteavoidance since compact fluorescents can last over 10 times longer thanincandescent bulbs. These bulbs fit standard fixtures and deliver excellentnatural light.

GoGreen inCampingStep 1: Camp close to home

y Choose a camp site close to home. This reducesgasoline consumption and automobile emissions

associated with getting there.Step 2: Camp in acampground

y Set up your camp in a designated camping area. Bystaying within a designated camping area, your visitwill leave a smaller footprint.

GoGreen inCampingStep 3: Dont disturb plants and animals

y Observe but dont disturb local plant and animal life. Dont feedlocal wildlife because it may it may interfere with their naturalforaging instincts.Step 4: Properly dispose ofall waste

y Leave the campsite in the same condition it was in when youarrived. If the campground does not have recycling bins, take thetrash home and recycle it there.Step 5: Bring reusable dishes and towels

y Bring reusable dishes and cloth towels. Do not plan on burning

paper plates and towels in the campfire because they containchemicals that may harm the environment.Step 6: Use biodegradable soap

y Bring a bucket and biodegradable soap for washing dishes.

Sustainable Garagey Step 1: Clean outthe Garage

Green also means clean. Clean out the garage and remove all the excessdebris (boxes, old pieces and parts). Take anything you can to therecycling plant. Wash your garage floor with a good pressure washer.

y Step 2: Install a Green RoofMost green roofs are using an integrated material design. This meansthat you will install your green roof working with many layers. Theseroofs are generally partially put together offsite. You can purchase green

roof materials and sections at your local home improvement center orat any online green resource that specializes in green buildingtechniques.Lay out your initial roof surface. Attach it to your garage wallsaccording to the roof surface requirements.

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    26/34

y Step 3: Install Green MatsRoll out and secure the green mat on top of the roof surface. Thesegreen mats promote the right growing conditions for plants. Plants willinsulate your roof from excess heat and cold during the extremeseasons of your locale.

    y

Step 4:Add Your PlantsAdd your seedlings to the already rolled out mat. Water as directed orleave dry. Each mat type is different. Check the directions.

y Step 5: Insulate the Garage Door

To avoid excess heat loss during the winter months or to promote theconservation of your air conditioning system, add insulation to yourgarage door.

"How to Cool Yourself in a Car

    Without Air Conditioning"

    # Plan your travel times. Early morning is oftenthe coolest time of the day, and if you are not ona fixed schedule, to work, for instance, you can

plan on doing as much driving as possible beforethe heat is unbearable.

    # Work with the traffic flow. This is another step inplanning your travel time. This event may cause

you to be stuck in bumper to bumper traffic hardlymoving along at all.

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    29/34

    # Look for shady routes to your frequent destinations. If

you drive a north or south direction, tree lined streets androadways are often shady for much of the day.

    # Roll down the windows. This sounds obvious, and it

should be, but sometimes the noise and odors of city

driving may tempt you to shut them out. If you have a fan

operated fresh air vent, open it, turn on the fan, and open

a rear window enough to draw a draft through your

automobile. A sun roof or sliding back window will draw a

lot of fresh air, even when you are traveling in traffic thatjust seems to be creeping along at a snail's pace.

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    30/34

    # Install reflective window tinting on the windshieldand windows. This can offer a substantial reduction in

direct sunlight coming into your car, and also provides

some protection for the vinyl interior from UV radiation

which can damage your car's upholstery and

    dashboards.

    # Put a fan on the dashboard or hang it from the visor.

There are a number of inexpensive 12 volt fans

available at auto parts stores and retailers. They clipon the sun visor or rear view mirror, or stand on the

dash board, and plug into a cigarette lighter plug to

move air, which in turn makes you feel cooler.

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    31/34

    # A 10lb block of ice on the floorboards under a vent will

help cool things down. The ice block can rest in a plastic

pan or baking tin. Opening a window a little will help withair flow.

    # Take a cooler. Pack a cooler with enough ice to keep

your drinks cold. For the extreme, drink the melted icewater!

    # Bring a cold pack. On the night before a trip or long car

drive, buy some cold pack and put them in the freezer.

Before you leave the next morning, take it out and wrap itin a towel. It will last a while.

Sustainable Bathroomy Step 1: Install a low flow or duel flushing toilet

You can make one yourself by filling a 2 litre plastic bottle with sandand placing it in the tank of the toilet. This will only allow the tank tofill up so much, saving water every time you flush

y Step 2:Another way to save water is to not takebaths, but to take short showers insteadA filled bathtub holds about 260 litres of water where a 5-minuteshower only uses 45 to 95 litres of water depending on the shower head.Sharing your shower time with a partner is also an effective way to

maximise water efficiency ;). And of course, turning off the tap whilebrushing your teeth is very important. According to global water usereports put out by UNESCO, this simple act can save almost 19 litres ofwater, thats twice the amount the average person in rural Kenya uses(only 10 litres/day).

  • 8/3/2019 Sustainable Dev- Presentation

    33/34

Sustainable Bathroomy Step 3: There is more garbage that is coming out of

your bathroom than you may thinkWe all have to work together to cut down our waste levels throughout

the entire house. The Al Gore endorsed climatecrisis.net site claimsthat you can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide per year if you cutdown your garbage by just 10%.

Eg:Also using traditional shaving soap with a brush is much better than aerosolgel/cream cans

SustainableWhile ShoppingStep 1: Bring your own bags, preferablycloth or string.

Stores tend to be very easy-going about using plastic bags, which are often made of petroleum products and may takehundreds of years to decompose

Step 2: Choose paper over plastic, for if you were to ever use a storebag, paper is easier to recycle than plastic.

Step 3: Think ofthe packagingLarger items generally tend to use less packaging than smaller ones - a two liter bottle of soda not only consumesless packaging than a six-pack of individual bottle, but it also costs less.

Step 4: Look for green "EnvironmentallyFriendly" tags on the itemsyou buyBuy local, buy organic.

Step 5:Recycle - even atthe restaurantCoffee Cups, cans, tins, Styrofoam plates; everything! There is bound to be a recycling bin, and ifthere is not, take a small (paper) bag, and drop it off later at a local recycling facility or drop it in

your own recycling bin at home.
