proportion of its population living in slums,
compared to other regions
• Between 2013 and 2016, Africa’s urban
population grew at around 3.6 per cent per

• Africa is a relatively minor consumer of material
compared to more industrialized and populated
regions
• Estimated total material extraction (2017):
• Africa: 2.8 billion tonnes (1.2 billion people)
• East and South Asia: 40.7 billion tonnes (4.5
billion people)
• North America & Europe: 26.9 billion tonnes
(1.1 billion people)
• Nevertheless, material consumption is growing
rapidly

• Plan for the expanding urban population
• Increase awareness of sustainable
production and consumption
• Commit to expanding energy access,
particularly for rural and impoverished areas
• Cultivate a policy environment where
science, technology and innovation can
