CHAIR’S REPORT – AGM SEPTEMBER 2015 SENG exists to promote information transfer regarding environmental issues of relevance to the environmental engineering profession and other environmental practitioners, and is closely aligned with the College of Environmental Engineers. We have branches in Canberra, Sydney, Newcastle, Queensland, Northern Territory, West Australia, South Australia and Victoria. These branches deliver a wide range of continuing professional development and advocacy services to members. In November 2014, Engineers Australia adopted revised policy positions on sustainability and climate change. This policy review was led by SENG, the Environmental College and EA President David Cruickshanks-Boyd. The SENG Board also contributed to the Environmental College’s revised guideline Towards Sustainable Engineering Practice. SENG was successful in gaining support from Engineers Australia for Dr Mark Diesendorf to run an eminent speaking tour in eight cities around Australia. This speaking tour, which presented a Sustainable Energy Future for Australia, was highly regarded, with record attendance. The SENG Board spent less time this year on external policy matters. We collaborated with Engineers Australia on a submission to the Federal Government regarding greenhouse gas emissions, and drafted letters to the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition on the same subject. The Board and the Queensland Branch wrote to the Queensland Government in relation to taxpayer funding for the Adani coal mine. The Board also assisted EA with two media releases on sustainable building. This year’s annual sustainability award for final year engineering students was won by Jonathan Piper, Rodrigo Rodrigues, Siddharth Bhattacharya and Siti Wilson from South Australia. They will all be attending the 2015 SENG conference, to be held in Adelaide, to present their project, titled Renewable Power from Scrap Materials. I would like to thank the Melbourne Branch for its contribution towards organising the Practical Response to Climate Change Conference in 2014 and the South Australian Branch for its efforts in organising the 2015 Conference, Dynamic Ecolibrium. I would also like to thank the National Board and Branch committee members for their hard work and commitment to SENG, and acknowledge the excellent administrative support provided to the Board by Ms Barletta. Lastly, I welcome incoming Chair, Graham Davies. SENG is in safe hands! Dr Alice Howe MIEAust Chair, Sustainable Engineering Society www.seng.org.au
