Vehicle efficiency isn’t just about your fuel and powertrain choice.
Fleets are responsible for developing a plan or work strategy document for taking action steps over three or more years to make the fleet more sustainable. The plan should:
1) Set a Goal: Establish sustainability as a fleet management goal
2) Develop Sustainability metrics: Establish a baseline with x% fuel or emissions reductions or efficiency improvements in a time period range of 3 to 5 years.

Rightsizing is not a once and done activity - Review, Right size and Repeat.
Behaviors and how vehicles are driven can make a big impact quickly

BEHAVIORS DRIVE IMPROVEMENTS
The main component for any change in driver behavior is always the same: TRAINING
Idle reduction: limiting the amount of time that vehicles idle unnecessarily is a key strategy for increasing fuel efficiency and reducing petroleum use.

For vehicles that need power for non propulsion it gets more complicated, however there are solutions:

STOP IDLING AND START SAVING BIG
Idling in the US uses more that 6 billion gallons of fuel at a cost of more than $19 billion each year
Heavy vehicles lose a tremendous amount of energy from wind resistance, braking, and rolling resistance
Fleets and owner-operators should look for aerodynamic solutions that cut fuel costs

CONTROLLING THE AIR FLOW
Aerodynamic losses can account for about a 45% decrease in efficiency
Low Rolling Resistant (LRR) technology LRR tires are used on three axle positions:
• Trailer (Rear Axle)
• Steer (Front Axle)
• Drive (Center axle)Super-Single Tires• In Class 8, replacing traditional dual tires with one super-single (also
called wide-base or single-wide) tire can save fuel by reducing vehicle weight and rolling resistance, which means the engine doesn't need to work as hard.
