Used adaptively for about 20 years now, the house at 126 Sutherlin Avenue nevertheless

presents itself to passersby as one the street’s grand residences, displaying the quiet dignity it

has since 1904 when it was built for Danville’s long-time Commissioner of Revenue.

Page 9: Sutherlin Avenue 119 - Liepe.comDanville, VA Old West End Historic District Sutherlin Avenue Rev. April 22, 2017 4 Sutherlin Ave 125 1890 Directory 1900 Census 1910 Census Owner Wife

Rev. April 22, 2017 9

Just after the turn of the 20th century Julia Anderson purchased in three parcels the lot on

which she and her husband Joseph B. Anderson, had constructed their two-story dwelling of

late-Queen Anne styling. This land, part of the former rear yard of the Sutherlin Mansion had

been subdivided and was being sold in city lots by Major Sutherlin’s widow, Jane E. Patrick

Sutherlin. Interest in these more-or-less 50-foot lots along Holbrook and Sutherlin avenues was

keen in the I 890s and early I 900s. As the many sumptuous late-Victorian residences along these

avenues attest, many Danvillians were eager to live at an address behind the Sutherlin’s historic

Italian Villa—where history had been made only a generation earlier.

Upon its completion, and for the next 50 years, the house at 126 Sutherlin Avenue was home to

members of the Anderson family, or their children and in-laws. Patriarch of the family, Joseph

Banister Anderson, served Danville as Commissioner of Revenue for some 30 years, in addition

to service in Virginia’s General Assembly. He and his wife, the former Julia Millspaugh, had two

sons and two daughters. One of these daughters, Henrietta Julia Anderson, continued to live in

her parents’ Sutherlin Avenue home after her marriage to W. Bascom Jordan, head of the

Morotock Manufacturing Company. Following her husband’s death in 1929, Mrs. Jordan

remained here with her daughter-in-law and son, W Bascom Jordan, Jr., a respected attorney

and later Danville’s City Attorney. In 1954, he and his wife sold the old family home to Mr. and

Mrs. Glen Brickey, and moved to 334 West Main Street, a serene, brown-shingle-clad dwelling

now used by Averett College as its Admissions Office.

Only six months later the Brickeys sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel T. Patterson. For

some twenty years Mr. Patterson, an executive in the rubber industry, lived with his family in

the Sutherlin Avenue house which many Danville residents still refer to as the old Patterson

home. Following his death in 1975, his widow, the former Frances Vick, sold the house to Mr.

and Mrs. John J. Smith.

It was John and Mary Kate Smith who were the first to adapt the house, at least in part, for

office space. Restored in 1977 to serve both as the couple’s home and office, the house was

reconfigured as an upstairs residence, with the first floor adapted for Mr. Smith’s real estate

business. The newly-remodeled dwelling was open as part of the Danville Historical Society’s

Walking Tour for the first time in December 1977.

In the mid-1980s the property was sold to pulmonary physicians, Drs. William W Henderson and

Thomas J. O’Neill, who adapted the first floor of the house as the Danville Pulmonary Clinic. In

the process, a former back porch was enclosed to provide a waiting room with convenient

access from the rear yard, which was surfaced in interlocking payers to blend the parking area

with the character of the house and nearby Danville Museum. When the Pulmonary Clinic

moved to larger quarters in 1995, the structure was leased to another physician, Dr. Jeffrey

Crittenden, who opened the Danville Neurology Clinic. Following the clinic’s move to Broad

Street in 1997, Dr. Randy Buckspan purchased the property.

A cosmetic and laser surgeon, Dr. Buckspan is delighted with the handsome old house which he

and his wife Amy have taken an active interest in refurbishing. Not only have they refined its

plan to suit his practice, but also to take full advantage of character- defining features such as

tall seven-panel doors, mellow old floors, paneled wainscoting and Edwardian-era mantels.

The Buckspans have painted the house a restful mid-green, trimmed in ivory which shows to

good advantage the L-shaped porch with Doric columns and a scrollwork applique within the

porch pediment. A beautiful Palladian-style window with shutters graces the right side of the

house, a design echoed in the smaller Palladian window in the front gable.

December, a month of holidays, includes Chanukah, the festival of lights. For Jews the world

over, it marks the rededication of the ancient temple in Jerusalem after Judas Maccabee

defeated Antiochus, the tyrannical Syrian king. During the eight days of Chanukah, eight candles

— one each day — will be lit in the traditional menorah, a candleholder reserved exclusively for

the annual celebration of freedom.

This year the Danville Historical Society’s Walking Tout coincides with the first day of Chanukah,

December 8th. Understandably, the Society is honored that the congregation of Temple Beth

Sholom agreed to open their house of worship at this special season. Members of the

congregation will be present to explain the rich symbolism of their temple, the menorah and

other ceremonial objects — all reminders of the active history of the congregation.

Standing like a red brick sentinel on Sutherlin Avenue, this austere but distinctive Romanesque

structure was built in 1899-1900. It was constructed for the congregation by RB. Graham, an

accomplished turn-of-the- century architect-builder. The verticality of the facade, which is

accented by a conical-topped corner belfry, is balanced by belt courses that link with the various

openings. The building adds a note of variety to a Street that otherwise consists of domestic

architecture.

Inside the structure, the Romanesque influence is enhanced by complex trusses with rounded

arches and the original stained glass windows flanking the sanctuary. Over the altar is a large

window depicting Moses holding the Law. Under the window the Hebrew scrolls of the Torah,

the five books of Moses, are housed in the ark built in the shape of the Temple that stood in

Jerusalem. In front of the ark is another early feature of the temple, the cast-iron eternal light, a

reminder of the continuing presence of God.

Tour Book 2009:

over, it marks the rededication of the ancient temple in Jerusalem after Judas Maccabeus

defeated Antiochus IV, the tyrannical Syrian king. During the eight days of Chanukah, eight

candles – one each day – will be lit by the "servant" candle, or shamash, in the traditional

menorah, a candle holder reserved exclusively for the annual celebration of freedom.

This year, the Danville Historical Society's Holiday Tour coincides with the first two full days of

Chanukah, December 12th and 13th. The Danville Historical Society is honored that the

Bee 31 Aug 1975: Mr. and Mrs. Steven Weber, 130 Sutherlin Ave., are among several young people who

this summer have purchased historic district homes and are renovating them. One official says young

buyers are the best hope for the district.

Tour Book 1997:

Among the most sought-after building lots in the tobacco and textile prosperity which surged

ahead in Danville despite the 1893 financial panic were those parcels along Holbrook and

Sutherlin avenues subdivided in the late 1 880s from the former rear yard of the Sutherlin

Mansion. According to city land books, the forty-foot lot, number 18, purchased at auction in

1894 by T.S. Williamson remained unimproved for almost a decade. In 1903 Williamson had this

comfortable house at 130 Sutherlin Avenue constructed as an investment for $1,600. A member

of an established Southside tobacco family, Thomas S. Williamson was also associated at the

time with a printing firm on South Union Street, Boatwright Brothers Co., where he served as

vice president. In fact, the first known occupant of this late-Queen-Anne-style dwelling, I.

Overton Boatwright, worked with him at Boatwright Brothers, according to the 1908 Danville

city directory. William P. Boatwright, Mr. Boatwright’s brother and business associate in the

firm, lived three doors down at 142 Sutherlin Avenue.

In 1912 Williamson disposed of the property altogether when he sold the house to Lula S.

Koons, who lived here for about three years with her husband Dr. Harry E. Koons, a local

physician. The house then was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. E. Walton Brown. Mr. Brown, an

attorney with Withers, Brown & Leigh, resided here with his family until 1918, when the house

was purchased by Rosa B. Bagby, the wife of 1. Lovelace Bagby. The Bagbys and their children

lived here for some forty years, and during that time two generations, father and son, became

associated with the old First National Bank, the predecessor of the local branch of NationsBank,

which last year conveyed its Main Street facility to the W.R. Grace Company. Mr. Bagby survived

his wife by about four years. After his death in 1961, his two sons sold the house to Mr. and Mrs.

Gilbert S. Guinn who remained here little more than a year before selling the property to the

trustees. of St. Peters Greek Orthodox Church as a home for their minister.

In 1975 Steven and Ella Weber purchased the house during the initial flush of restoration work

on Sutherlin Avenue following the creation of the historic district in 1972. Mr. Weber’s expertise

in his profession as a mechanic, combined with his and Mrs. Weber’s other skills began to

transform the aging structure. Their efforts at restoration, especially evident to the passerby in a

period exterior paint scheme, brick sidewalk, antique lighting and cast-iron fence, proved to be

just the first of several by conscientious young couples, each of whom gradually improved the

house and, in turn, the entire street. When the Webers moved to Forest Hills, the house was

sold to another enthusiastic young professional couple, John and Lisa Vine in 1984. In 1987,

after another brief transfer of ownership, the house was acquired by Fred and Vicki Meder. The

Meders continued the work of their predecessors and Mr. Meder added his talents as a

landscape designer to the grounds, especially in the rear yard.

Just over a year ago, the house was purchased by Parker and Sarah Perkins. The couple is

enthusiastic about the structure, not only for its charm and live ability but also because, as their

first house since being married in June of 1996, they are eager to make it a special, memorable

place. Mr. Perkins, a stockbroker by profession, brought with him here reminders of his family’s

roots in nearby South Boston, Virginia, including many hand-crafted items fashioned by his

mother, who is a gifted artist. Also on display are mementos of his years in the Marines,

including decorations for service in the Gulf War and as a Marine Aide at the White House. Mrs.

Perkins too is no stranger to antique houses. Among the pictures decorating the upstairs is one

of Bunker Hill Farm, a 90-acre family estate near Chevy Chase, Maryland, built in 181 7 by her

great-great-great grandfather, William Henry Baldwin. Complementing a number of the couple’s

prized family possessions are several English antiques, Victorian period pieces appropriate to

their turn-of-the-century house, along with furnishings from Southside Virginia—all collected by

the Perkins, in addition to watercolors and other original art which adorn the walls.

Tour Book 1985:

After the War Between the States, the land near Maj. William T. Sutherlin’s Main Street mansion

experienced rapid residential development, following the trend set by the Major, who had

moved to the top of Main Street on the eve of the War. By the 1890s, the choice sites in the

city’s West End already were graced with new and fashionable Victorian dwellings. Sutherlin

Avenue, after the death of its namesake in 1893, was quickly subdivided and developed.

The attractive house at 138 Sutherlin Avenue is one of several Queen Anne-style structures that

rose on the Street in the mid and late 1890s. A spindle-work porch that wraps around the house

in an L-shape dominates the facade. The circular pavilion at the corner, and a small porch on the

second floor add more interest. A projecting gable with a quaint, almost Palladian, window is

also typical of Victorian Queen Anne architecture, It is likely that the local builders Bass, Brown

and Lee built the house, since that contracting firm sold the property to Mr. J. Turner Hamlin in

1897. With several other family members, James Turner Hamlin worked at F.M. Hamlin, Sons &

Co., a prosperous grocery store on Main Street downtown. Later he formed Hamlin and Hamlin,

wholesale dealers in confections, cigars, and related items. Mr. Turner Hamlin and his family

lived on Sutherlin almost ten years. In 1906 they sold the property to Mr. and Mrs. W.W.

Holland. For the next three-quarters of a century members and descendants of the Hollands, a

family whose name was synonymous with tobacco enterprises in Danville, occupied the house.

After Mr. Holland’s death, his widow, Lizzie C. Holland conveyed the property to her daughter,

Mary Holland Lynn in July of 1920. She and her husband, Mr. P. Holt Lyon, a banker, and later

City Sergeant, lived here for many years. Mrs. Lyon’s four children (surname Woolley) by a

previous marriage, also resided here at various times over the years.

Mr. and Mrs. T. Benton Woolley and their son were the last of this family to live on

Sutherlin Avenue. Mrs. Woolley especially, is remembered by hundreds of area children who

first learned from her the joys of books and reading as she directed the children’s Department at

the Danville Public Library. In 1982 Mrs. Woolley, by then a widow, moved to Richmond and sold

the house to Mr. and Mrs. Alan R. DeAndrea. In the succeeding three years, the owners have

renewed this fine old house with a lively three-color paint scheme outside, and with careful

repair, fresh paint and wallpaper borders inside. The tall mantels in the formal rooms are

especially interesting. The living room mantel has been stripped and refinished by the father of

Ms. Gayle Saunders, who occupies the first floor. The gleaming wood is mellow, solid cherry. Ms.

Saunder’s father also hand crafted much of the beautiful pine and walnut furniture in use

throughout the house.

Tour Book 1988:

Completed in 1897, this Queen Anne style dwelling with Colonial Revival details has been home

to only two families. It was built for Mr. William P. Boatwright, who founded a printing firm,

Boatwright Brothers Co.; and a furniture company, Boatwright Furniture Co. The den still

contains a low, massive bookcase—one of several that held the Boatwrights’ extensive library—

that is a product of Boatwright Furniture. Mr. Boatwright and his wife lived here for more than

50 years.

The present owners acquired the house in 1950 shortly after Mr. Boatwright died. According to

Mrs. Moore, the house is reminiscent of one where she lived as a child in Portsmouth, Virginia.

With its steep gables, irregular bays, and semi-circular porch, the house is a classic example of a

restrained, late-Victorian frame dwelling. About 1940 the Boatwrights made the only alteration

to the original structure when they enlarged the back of the house—the present dining room

and kitchen. In their 38 years on Sutherlin Avenue, Mr. and Mrs. Moore have worked diligently

to preserve and enhance their home both inside and out. Their only subtle change at the front

of the house was the replacement of the upper wood panels in the front doors with ones of

glass, complete with an etched fleur-de-lis design. This motif is like that in the massive stained

glass windows in the stairwell above the rear hall. The newel post is topped with an original

gaslight and frosted shade. The front hall is enhanced by several period architectural features—

a plaster ceiling medallion, and a built-in “boot bench” with beveled mirror. Overhead, a

spindle-work screen completes the design. The “Adamesque” mantels in the parlor and den to

the left of the hall suggest particularly the revival of interest in classical details at the turn of the

century.

Tour Book 2008:

The bold silhouette of this late Victorian dwelling – constructed in typical asymmetrical Queen

Anne-style – sports lavish Colonial Revival details such as Tuscan columns supporting its

prominent L-shaped porch. Its builder, Mr. John Lee, was among the first investors in the late

1880s when the Sutherlin Mansion’s large rear yard was parsed as nine 50-foot lots along

Sutherlin Avenue to Green Street. In 1898 his wife, Florence (Jefferies) Lee, purchased lot 12,

for S1,060. Construction on the Lees’ dwelling began immediately; the 1899 land book notes

"$1,600 for house."

It is said that John Lee used only the finest lumber here. Small wonder – by 1890 he was among

the city’s leading lumber dealers, a principal in Bass, Brown & Lee. By 1900 that firm had

merged with others to assume its decades long identity – the Danville Lumber & Manufacturing

Company – which only shuttered operations on Lynn at Colquohoun Street earlier this

year. After Mr. Lee’s death in 1911, his widow and several of six children continued to reside on

Sutherlin Avenue. An elder daughter, Miss Myrtle Lee, is recalled even today in the

neighborhood where she lived for half a century – creating for herself an upper level apartment

and leasing the main floor, until her retirement to Culpeper, where she died in 1956.

In 1955, the Lee family sold their home of nearly 57 years to William and Esther Ware; they soon

conveyed the property to Louise Brooks Smith who lived here until 1971. The house then was

purchased by owners of the adjacent cottage at 154 Sutherlin, Elrod and Mary Long, under

whose 15-year watch it continued to he maintained. Thereafter it declined – as rental units

mostly in the hands of a succession of absentee owners – until the current owner, Carol S.

Kallenberger, purchased it in December 2006.

Since acquiring the house, she and restoration specialist / contractor David L. Baker have been

restoring it methodically as a single-family dwelling – both delighted to be part of the

reclamation of the Old West End. With great patience, Mr. Baker has removed layers of paint to

uncover the original exterior hues. Today, with fresh paint recalling its historic colors and

beauty, this handsome late Victorian house is assuming its place as one of the street’s "Painted

Ladies." Metal fish-scale "shingles," now restored, enliven its dramatic roofline.

Ongoing interior restoration combines contemporary comfort with traditional style. Befitting a

home built for a dealer in lumber, the interior is rich with millwork and floors of varied woods,

including diamond-patterned oak parquetry in the dining room. Two of three corner fireplace

mantels are oak. At the end of the entrance hall, a fanlight transom tops the passage door into

the stair hall – with lofty winding staircase dominated by an expansive landing window bordered

with geometric stained glass.

A unique feature of the tour is special guest Georgia Organ-Sack wearing original Victorian

attire. A treasured family friend, Georgia is an avid, expert collector of period Victorian

attire. She has presided over numerous fund raisers for the Iowa Historical Society, as well as

making frequent appearances at centennial celebrations and at museums. She is a perennial

hostess of the annual Iowa “Field of Antiques” show and sale in Lost Nation, Iowa.

picturesque home of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Long at 154 Sutherlin Ave. Known as the old Slaughter place,

the house reflects the trend of the Victorian years with less ornate decorative woodwork, yet the

mantels and Corinthian columns in the entrance hall make it distinctive of the period.

Tour Book 1985:

In February of 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Gresham of Baltimore, Maryland, sold a 50-foot

lot, number 11 on Sutherlin Avenue, to Mr. S.J. Slaughter. They had owned the property since

1894, and when it was conveyed to Mr. Slaughter their sale price of $2,250 included the cost of

the present trim dwelling, then under construction. Actually a raised “cottage,” the house is

typical of the simpler, less ornate structures built during the Edwardian era. Its clean lines are

embellished with features such as the beveled, leaded-glass front door, and a Neoclassical front

porch. The Neo-classical influence is evident inside as well in the divider between the front hall

and sitting room. The floorplan, with its center hail running the length of the structure, is

functional and eminently livable.

Stonewall Jackson Slaughter, its first owner and occupant was a Danville tobacconist of some

repute. He had married Elizabeth Maury, whose forebears, the Maury and Harvie families, are

well known in the history of Virginia and Danville. Mrs. Slaughter continued to live here for

several years after the death of her husband in 1945. In 1950 she sold the house to Mr. and Mrs.

J. Kenneth Carter, who lived on Sutherlin Avenue for some 20 years. Mr. and Mrs. Elrod M. Long

purchased the house in July of 1971, about a year before Sutherlin Avenue and nearby streets

were included in Danville’s Historic District. During the 1970s they, like many other

neighborhood residents, refurbished their house, spurred on by the renewal of the street

signaled by the planting of Bradford Pear trees along the curbside in 1977, and by the influx of

young homeowners/ restorers. The present owners, the Harrison Mitchells, have continued to

ensure that the house gets the attention it deserves. It is furnished with pieces from several

generation of their families.

Tour Book 2008:

On tour twice before under the watch of two earlier, caring owners, this charming and spacious

"raised cottage" has enjoyed an elegant restoration by new, preservation-minded stewards,

who relocated to Danville from Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In 1913, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Gresham of Baltimore, Maryland, conveyed Lot 11 with this

home, then under Construction, to S. J. Slaughter. Sold for $2,250, the cottage is typical of the

clean simplicity of architecture built during the Edwardian era. Nonetheless, the home is

embellished with a beveled, leaded-glass front door and a Neoclassical front porch. This

ornamentation is repeated in the interior with a Neoclassical colonnade, which defines the front

foyer from the sitting room.

Stonewall Jackson Slaughter, its first occupant, was a Danville tobacconist. He married Elizabeth

Maury, who is descended from the well-known Maury and Harvie families of Danville and

elsewhere in Virginia. After Mr. Slaughter’s death, his wife continued to live here until 1950,

when she sold the home to Mr. and Mrs. J. Kenneth Carter. The Carters resided on Sutherlin

Avenue for over 20 years before selling the home to Mr. and Mrs. Elrod M. Long just about the

time the Old West End Historic District was formed in the early 1970s. Mr. Long was a co-owner

of the Crowell-Long Ford dealership in Craghead Street's historic Crowell Building. Mrs. Long

held the position of City Registrar for many years. During their tenure, renewed interest in

preserving the area spurred the planting of trees along the curbside parkway strip in 1977. In

1984 and again, beginning in 1990, the property was home to two couples named Mitchell –

respectively, Mr. and Mrs. E. Harrison Mitchell III, and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Mitchell – all of whom

lavished considerable attention to make the spacious cottage a home reflecting the history of

their respective families.

In 1995, the property was purchased by Ms. Cynthia Eastwood, who spent several years bringing

the house into top form structurally. Over the past year and a half the present owner, Richard

Morris, and his comrade-in-restoration Mark Willard, have benefited from Ms. Eastwood's

considerable efforts in preserving the house, now a showcase for their extensive array of

antiques and period collections appropriate to a trim Edwardian cottage.
