Why wind?

As we consume more and more at one end of the spectrum, an enormous percentage of the world's population lacks access to energy to meet its most basic needs. Approximately 1.5 billion people do not have access to reliable and affordable energy supplies. For them there is no electricity for lights, everyday appliances to pump water or the equipment to attend to basic healthcare.

Providing energy to those deprived will greatly enhance their quality of life and, in many cases, ensure survival. Food and water are the most basic human needs but energy is the enabler. Energy is an intrinsic part of every solution designed to improve quality of lives.

One answer lies in the abundant and renewable natural resources the planet offers.

Windmills date back to 600 AD. They were first used to grind grains. These early windmills evolved through the centuries and by the late 1800s they were widely used. A century and a half later, wind power has spread across the world. Commercial wind farms now operate in nearly 80 countries and provide increased energy security; stable power prices; and sustainable economic, ecological and social development bringing investment and hundreds of thousands of jobs. Wind power can significantly reduce dependence on imported fuels, which in turn improves air quality. Each megawatt (MW) installed can cut almost 1,700 tonnes of CO emissions every year. That's the 2

equivalent to planting 85,000 trees.

Wind energy has a key advantage over many other electricity generation sources. It is totally independent of fossil fuel price shocks and shortages. When we look at the big picture, wind scores even higher with none of the environmental impacts of conventional fuels. With rapid technological advances, the cost of wind power has dropped to nearly one-fifth of its cost in the 1980s. This trend will continue with next generation materials and ever-more efficient turbine designs.

As policy makers look to develop power sources to meet the world's rapidly growing needs they have several choices to make to balance short-term costs and longer-term sustainability.

Wind is still to exercise even a fraction of its potential. Average annual global power consumption currently stands at

*15 terawatt (TW). Global wind power **capacity alone is 72 TW. Renewable

energy is not only the solution to our depleting fossil fuels. It is also the way we can create a healthier planet and mitigate the perils of catastrophic climate change. Wind offers the opportunity to generate clean, sustainable power the world over, bringing energy security and improving the lives of people everywhere.

Offshore overview

Wind resources over the seas are immense. The potential to tap and convert that wind to energy is staggering. As the speed of offshore wind is much higher than it is onshore, the energy that can be generated from it is greater. It requires complex and cutting-edge technology, as well as supreme project construction and management skills, to install giant wind turbines onto the seabed.

Offshore wind farms allow policymakers to develop large-scale renewable power production and meet renewable energy targets. The offshore market has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 40 per cent between 2010 and 2015, to reach 26 GW of installed capacity by 2015*.

Development of renewables in northern Europe is expected to be huge and offshore wind will constitute around 20 per cent of European wind power by 2015. The European offshore market will primarily be driven by projects in the UK and Germany. The two countries have extensive project pipelines and will account for around 50 per cent of new offshore installations until 2015.

REpower, the Suzlon Group company with offshore expertise, is well positioned to exploit this wave of growth. REpower produces a 6.15 MW turbine, currently the largest commercially available turbine in the world.

As more and more onshore wind sites become saturated and the demand for clean energy increases, more countries will develop offshore wind power installations.

Wind resources over the seas are immense. The potential to tap and convert that wind to energy is staggering. As the speed of offshore wind is much higher than it is onshore, the energy that can be generated from it is greater. It requires complex and cutting-edge technology, as well as supreme project construction and management skills, to install giant wind turbines onto the seabed.

Offshore wind farms allow policymakers to develop large-scale renewable power production and meet renewable energy targets. The offshore market has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 40 per cent between 2010 and 2015, to reach 26 GW of installed capacity by 2015*.

Development of renewables in northern Europe is expected to be huge and offshore wind will constitute around 20 per cent of European wind power by 2015. The European offshore market will primarily be driven by projects in the UK and Germany. The two countries have extensive project pipelines and will account for around 50 per cent of new offshore installations until 2015.

China

China is the largest wind energy market in the world. In 2010, China added 16.5 GW of wind power, which is nearly 50 per cent of the annual global installation. With increasing domestic demand and a strong push by the Government, China has a renewable energy target of 15 per cent by 2020.

Suzlon spotted this potential early and established Suzlon Energy (Tianjin) Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary, demonstrating the company's commitment to China. As a major international player, the Suzlon Group has exceeded 1.25 GW in signed contracts for the Chinese market. It also functions as a global export base, and provides overseas wind farm development services to its Chinese customers.

REpower is represented in China by REpower North (China) Co. Ltd., headquartered at Baotou, in Inner Mongolia, and REpower Systems SE Beijing, which has the primary task of supporting REpower's Chinese licensees (Zheijiang Windey and Dongfang Steam Turbine Works), and organizing the delivery of components to China. It also integrates Chinese components into REpower technology and sources components from China tapping into the booming Chinese wind power market.

The Suzlon Group global footprint is strategically aligned to high growth markets. The network is structured to tap into markets of varied wind regimes and geographic and climatic conditions, harnessing winds across onshore as well as offshore wind sites.

REpower Australia and Suzlon Energy Australia combined operations in October 2011. The new entity, REpower Australia, is based in Melbourne and offers both REpower and Suzlon products and EPC services for the Australian and New Zealand markets.

The Group employs more than 320 people in Australia, spread across its head offices, nine site offices and warehousing facilities in Jamestown, South Australia and Portland Region.

Manufacturing

Suzlon has invested strategically in component as well as integrated turbine manufacturing facilities in India, Germany and the USA. The Group has a total manufacturing capacity of 5,300 MW.

These locations were carefully chosen for their manufacturing-friendly policies and economic environment, easily available raw materials and skilled manpower. They each give Suzlon access to local expertise and knowledge and are close to key markets. As a result costs are optimised and logistics simplified.

By monitoring it's large fleet of turbines from remote monitoring centres, Suzlon is able to predict problems and trouble-shoot. Centres at Pune in India and Chicago in the USA proactively monitor turbines across India, Sri Lanka, the Americas and Europe. The Suzlon monitoring centre in India is one of the largest supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) centres in the world, monitoring and operating more than 6,000 turbines. Suzlon Foundation is mandated to lead CSR initiatives across all business operations.

The Foundation’s mission is: 'Having minimal impact on the natural environment, enabling local communities to develop their potential, empowering employees to be responsible civil society members and committing ourselves to ethical business practices that are fair to all stakeholders so that they can collectively contribute towards creating a better world for all'. The Foundation operates with a multi-pronged approach to:

• Engage stakeholders in socially and environmentally beneficial activities

• Empower vulnerable communities to combat their own development issues and effectively participate in the governance of community and public institutions

Working with 115,000 families so far, these programmes have improved the livelihoods of nearly 110,000 families. Suzlon has built social capital by supporting and strengthening 3,200 community-based organizations. Investments in educational interventions at 896 schools mean that more than 150,000 students are benefitting from better education. On the environmental front thousands of trees are added every year taking the total to more than a million trees planted. Due to our water conservation efforts, over 3,837,125 cubic meter water has been conserved so far.
