DIXON – Elementary students in the Dixon School District are learn-ing more than reading, math and science in the classroom.
They also have learned social skills and ways to manage their anger in a positive way.
For the past 5 years, the school district has been implementing Second Step, a violence preven-tion curriculum that helps schools and fami-lies encourage children to get along well with others.
“This program teaches students about anger management, empathy and impulse control,” said Pam Maas, a social worker at Washing-
ton Elementary School. “Students are also taught the skills for learning.”
There was a parent meeting about Second Step on Thursday at the school.
“What’s important is parents have a good understanding of what we are teaching their children, so they are connected with it and they can support it at home,” Maas said. “If the school and home are able to do similar things, it will help students a lot.”
With empathy, stu-dents are able to identify and understand others’ feelings in order to be more caring people.
The anger manage-ment component can help students recognize, understand and manage
anger in safe and con-structive ways.
Another key part of Sec-ond Step is impulse con-trol, which teaches stu-dents to slow down and think through options when faced with difficult situations or problems.
Asking and answer-ing questions like, Do I need to calm down?, helps children recognize strong emotions and the need to be calm when trying to solve a prob-lem.
“This helps kids at the development level deal with other people,” said Michelle Spinden, a social worker at Madison Elementary School.
The students are taught these steps through visu-als, and by role-playing in the classroom, among other things.
“Everything is laid out, and the material is really good to use,” Spinden said. “Students who use
this are able to make friends, become a good friend, follow directions, and they are able to deal with anger and emo-tions.”
All students in the dis-tricts participate in the curriculum.
“The kids seem to love the class, and they get real excited about it,” said Deanne Droege, a school social worker at Jefferson Elementary School. “We have defi-nitely seen a decrease in office referrals.”

STERLING – Police Chief Ron Potthoff wants the public to know that, if they get pulled over by a cop who’s looking a little scruffier than usual, not to worry – it’s for a good cause.
Ten Sterling police offi-cers are taking part in the department’s No-Shave November drive, with all proceeds benefiting April House, Whiteside County’s child advocacy center.
No-Shave November is a national fundraising campaign in which peo-ple are asked to let it grow for a cause. Officers who wanted to participate in the department’s facial-hair-grow-a-thon had to raise $30.

said.April House is a place
where children who have been physically or sexu-ally abused or neglected are interviewed about the things they have endured. Over the past year and a half, county employees and members of the public have been working tirelessly to keep it running.
In July 2013, it faced almost-certain closure. After a story was pub-lished about its plight, the center received $31,545 in donations and volun-teer help from members of Twin Cities Sunrise Rotary Club to renovate its new location.
To donate, people may mail in or drop off checks at the Sterling Police Department, 212 Third Ave., with April House in the memo field.

Ten members of the force are taking part in No-Shave November, a national initiative to grow out facial hair for a good cause. The Sterling precinct is raising money for April House, Whiteside County’s child advocacy center.
Dixon cops working on fuzz, too
Twenty-two mem-bers of the Dixon Police Department are participating in No-Shave November, so far raising $680 for the American Cancer Society and United Way of Lee County.
Any officer participat-ing must raise a mini-mum of $25.
The public can donate to their cause by mailing in or drop-ping off checks at the department, 220 S. Hennepin Ave. Checks should be made out to Dixon Police Department, with a reference to No-Shave November
