Belle was the third child of six. She had three sisters, Bess, Ruth, Molly, and two brothers, Albert and Saul. Molly is the only sibling that is alive today, and she still resides in Canada. One of Belles memories of her childhood was from when she was five or six. There was a lot of snow on the ground and she climbed up on the garage roof and jumped into the snow below and had to be rescued by her father as it was way over her head. Her brothers and sisters thought it was hysterical. Belle went through all of her schooling in Windsor, Ontario and graduated from high school in 1935. S he continued her education by attending a technical school studying bookkeeping and shorthand and other office skills. When Belle was 20, her first job was working at the Capitol Egg and Poultry Company, where she worked for about six years doing office work. They supplied hospitals and restaurants with chickens and eggs. When WWII broke out Belle went to work in an ammunition factory inspecting triggers on guns. She did this until the war was over. Belle met her husband, Maurice, in Canada at the age of twenty-six. He was a refugee from the Nazis in Poland. She was 29 and he was 32 when they married. They were married in the United States and Canada. On December 22, 1945 they married in Detroit, Michigan and then went to Windsor, Canada and had a Jewish religious ceremony on December 23. After they married they moved to Detroit, where Maurice had a very good job as an architect. Belle also worked at a commercial electric company until their first child was  born. Alan was born in 1949 and their son Mark was  born in 1953. After Alan was born she was a busy housewife and in her “spare” time she sold Tupperware. She did this for the next five years. After the boys were grown, they retired and she and Maurice moved to Scottsdale in 1972. After a year of retirement, Maurice couldnt stand the boredom, so he went to work for the city of Scottsdale in the Parks and Recreation department. That lasted for the next fifteen years. While he worked, Belle turned to golf, swimming and anything else fun that she could find. Maurice passed away in January 2000. Belle lived with her children for a year and found that to be boring, so she decided to move to Scottsdale Village Square to spend the rest of her days. She knew a couple of residents that already lived here, Claire Grossman, and Virginia Weiss and when she visited them many times over the years, she loved the way the employees treated the residents. She was so impressed by this, she decided to move here. Belle loves to play poker, bingo, bridge and loves all of the activities that are provided here at SVS. Health and Wellness

Are you losing your mind? For most people, memory lapses are a normal part of aging, not awarning of a serious impairment. There are many ways to improve

your cognitive skills and keep them from disrupting your daily life.

Many of us, as we reach a certain age, get little nervous when wemisplace our keys or forget a phone number we‟ve dialed a hundred

times. But lapses in memory and slowing of the mental responses are anormal part of the aging process for many people and not an ominoussign of mental deterioration.

Let‟s start with the good news:

Not all forgetfulness, even dementia, is caused by Alzheimer‟s.

What looks like significant memory loss can be caused by

treatable, even reversible conditions such as a urinary tractinfection, infections in general, high blood pressure, depression, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, hearing loss and

medications (prescribed and over the counter).

The brain is capable of producing brain cells at any age.

Brain training and new learning can occur at any age.

To a large extent, maintaining a healthy memory is under

your control.

Several factors cause aging brains to experience changes in the abilityto retain and retrieve memories:

The hippocampus (part of the brain) is especially vulnerable toage-related deterioration, and can effect how well you retain

information.

There‟s a relative loss of neurons with age, which can affect theactivity of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters and their receptors.

An older person often experiences decreased blood flow to the

brain and processes nutrients that enhance brain activity lessefficiently than a younger person.

Heroes Born Down Under

When World War I erupted in Europe in 1914, Australia and New Zealand were young countries on the other side of theglobe. By 1915, Australia and New Zealand shed their innocence and joined the war on the side of the Allies.

Under a plan by Winston Churchill, the newly formed Aus-

tralian and New Zealand Army Corps, or ANZAC, shippedout to the Gallipoli Peninsula inTurkey with the aim of capturing Constantinople, thecapital of the Ottoman Empire. On April 25, the ANZAC forcelanded at Gallipoli and began aneight-month long struggle thatended in massive casualties anddefeat. Out of the rubble, though, emerged the “AnzacSpirit,” a legacy of the ANZAC troops‟ bravery that redefinedAustralia and New Zealand‟s national identity. Today, AnzacDay is celebrated on April 25 to remember Australian and New Zealand soldiers of all wars, past and present.

The “Anzac Spirit” captures the persona of the ANZAC

soldiers. They were strong, courageous, loved each other like brothers, fought with reckless valor, dismissed authority, and laughed no matter how dire the odds. One war corre-spondent wrote of their storming the Gallipoli shore, “Theywaited neither for orders nor for the boats to reach the beach, but, springing out into the sea, they waded ashore, and, forming some sort of rough line, rushed straight on theflashes of the enemy‟s rifles.” The Gallipoli Campaignmarked both the birth of nationhood for Australia and New Zealand, as well as the birth of their proud nationalcharacters.
