What Should You Be Earning? Call us for a free career consultation: 02079933353 This is not an easy question to answer. There are a number of factors which will effect how much you could be earning, what level you should be at, and how long it should take to reach each level. Recruitment is by and large a meritocratic industry, so really the amount you should be earning is completely up to you. This is a topic which needs to be handled case by case, but here is what people are typically earning on their basic salaries: TRAINEE CONSULTANT SNR/PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT TEAM LEADER MANAGER ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR SALES DIRECTOR MANAGING DIRECTOR CEO £20,000 - £25,000 £25,000 - £35,000 £45,000 £55, 000 £65,000 £60, 000 - £80,000 £100,000 - £120,000 £120,000 - £150,000 £150,000 The amount of time it should take to get there is a little tricky to quantify as it is completely dependent on company and person. We would expect someone who has 6-12 months experience to have progressed from trainee to consultant; 2-3 years experience should see you at Senior Consultant level; 3 -5 years Team Leader? But it’s down to the targets which are set and whether they are being hit. No company or consultant is the same as another with regards to targets. We could generalise and say that to be a Team Leader you need to be billing a minimum of £250k but this isn’t always the case. To become a manager you need to build a team to 10; TL to Manager a team of atleast 15; Manager to AD a team of 20+? Not necessarily, that all depends on the size of the company. The thing is, it’s not an exact science, there is no such thing as what you “should” be earning or what level you “should” be at in recruitment. It’s very difficult to define what a typical career path is in Recruitment. There is a huge disparity between companies, markets and the route you could take - do you want to manage a team or do you want to be a “super biller”? At SW6 we appreciate these disparities and treat everyone we speak to case by case. We would implore every recruiter to treat their career like they treat their house - keep your eye on the market, even if you’re not ready to move make sure you know what you’re worth and make sure you are getting it. The current market is completely candidate driven so it’s a great time to “value” your career. We think it’s important for consultants to know what their position is in the market. If you would like to know more about what your experience is worth we offer free compensation benchmarking and sector advice. Please get in touch to discover what’s going on in your sector.
