From the PrincipalIt has been few years since our first Equestrian students entered in the State Interschool Equestrian Championships

and it has been exciting to see the development of the teams and skill levels improve over time. On 26-28 April

2013, 16 students represented Swan Christian College in the State Interschool Equestrian Championships at the

State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon.

60 schools from across Western Australia attended the event and 280 riders competed with over 300 horses. There

were 3 long days of events with some overlapping into the evening; it was an exceptionally hectic time for both

parents and riders. Each student trained for a significant number of hours every week for the event, presenting

themselves and their horses to a high standard. To compete in this event, students make a year long commitment

that must be scheduled around their schoolwork, in all weather conditions, with late nights and early mornings and

they are responsible for the welfare of their horse. With trust and understanding they develop a partnership with

their horse that allows them to compete successfully.

The competition was challenging and all the students represented the College to a very high standard.

At the final results, our team was named Overall Champion Secondary School, State Champion Dressage

Secondary School and Madison D was named Overall Champion Secondary School Rider. These results are a

fantastic achievement and a worthy result for the dedication of both the riders and their parents.

Congratulations to the team members on their exceptional performance:

Eloise H, Tyla S, Clancy M, Mikayla R, Joshua P, Paige S, Matilda H, Taylah W, Madison T, Brooke S, Madison D,

Libby H, Holly E, Rebecca S, Kirsten L and Tayla P.

The State Equestrian Centre will make a trophy presentation to the team at a College assembly shortly and we look

forward to the opportunity to celebrate with these students as they receive their awards.

Page 5 of 14http://swan.springcms.com.au/view/2013051390548/2013051390719

On Friday 5 May, Kindy to Year 2 students celebrated Mothers' Day with their mums. A lovely morning tea was held

in the Maali Mia Restaurant, followed by a production of song performances by each year group and a video

presentation in the theatre. Mums were then invited back to the classrooms and presented with gifts made by their

children.

It was a very special time as everyone gathered together to honour Mothers. We hope all our beautiful mums had

an exceptional day!

Hollie Johnson, one of our Kindergarten teachers and a mother of students at the College, had these words to

say….

'As a mum and a teacher I felt so blessed by each of the beautiful performances'.

Here are a few things our students had to say about their mums and Mother's day…

Isaac V 'My mummy is soft and gives me hot water bottles when I'm cold'

Jazmin C 'She makes me laugh'

Joshua P 'I made my mum breakfast in bed and made my mum toast'.

Page 7 of 14http://swan.springcms.com.au/view/2013051390548/2013051390719

The swimming season has come and gone and I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the

students who represented their house at the College House Swimming Carnival and subsequently the College at

the Interschool ACC and WACSSA Carnivals. We would also like to acknowledge the hard training undertaken by

those committed athletes who began preparing for the season in December 2012.

The House Swimming Carnival was held at Bayswater Waves Aquatic Centre on Wednesday 27 February. It is an

event that has been dominated by Shenton for the last 8 years, however this year's carnival finish was very exciting

with the final relay race making all the difference between first and second place. Participation was an important

factor in the carnival and it was good to see students of varying abilities being involved in a range of events on the

day.

We would like to thank the staff for the various jobs they were involved with and congratulate the students for their

overall extremely good behaviour. At the conclusion of the event, Bayswater Waves Management staff commended

the students for the way in which they conducted themselves and represented the College.

Included below are the overall House points and Year Champion results.

Inter-School Swimming Carnivals

Over recent years Swan has experienced mixed success at the Inter-School Swimming Carnivals. However we had

some outstanding individual performances this year, and are hopeful that next year we can build on this and

experience the results and the enthusiasm for swimming similar to years gone by. Again, I would like to

acknowledge the efforts of the committed students who represented the College and the time they have taken to

train for the events, and their parents who sacrifice time and effort to help their children attend the training for these

events. Below are a list of the carnival overall points results and some commendable performances by our athletes.

On the last day of Term 1, Senior School students were greeted at lunchtime with a large variety of student

performers. Chilled Busking saw 40 Swan students from Years 7 -12 'busk' around the College. Students sang in

solos or in groups, played guitar and even performed magic! Altogether the students raised $369.95, which has

been donated to Swanmissions.

We would like to invite parents, students and friends of the College community on Friday 21 June for one of the

biggest events in the College calendar this year, Arts 4 Africa.

The night will not only showcase some of the best talent Swan Christian College has in the Maali Mia theatre, but

will also help to raise vital funds towards the Kantolomba Education and feeding program in Zambia. The

Kantolomba Project was initiated by Swan Christian College to help vulnerable children in Zambia with an

education and regular meals. Proceeds from Arts for Africa will go to building 3 further classrooms at the school.

The night will commence with an informal gathering in the foyer where guests will be treated with a variety of

freshly cooked finger food and be entertained by buskers. Following this will be a short Swammissions

presentation and entertainment in the main theatre.

There will be performances from both Junior and Senior School students including the Drum Corps, Big Band and

Jazz Band, 2 Senior School Choirs, Jazz Vocal Ensemble, Flute and Recorder Ensemble, Year 5 Musical Theatre

and String Ensemble. Tea and Coffee will be provided at the conclusion of the concert.

Get in early for tickets for what will be a fantastic night of food and entertainment. Bookings can be made through

Try Booking. www.trybooking.com/ctnv .
