“This year’s team shouldhave some success in run-ning events of the 800 me-ters on up,” said Allen of aplus for the season. “ChadBurkholder, QuintinReiser and Grant Knierimare all coming back afterhaving successful trackseasons last year in thoseevents. The other possiblestrength is throws. Wehave several in theseevents that placed high inmany meets last year.”
Other than a weaknessin the some of the sprint-ing events, youth couldalso be a weak point.
“Of the 50 boys out for
the team we have severalwho are only freshmenand sophomores,” pointedout Allen. “They still havea lot of growing up to do inthe sport of track andfield.”
Allen looks to the four-time defending championsas the favorites to win theNWOAL.
“This year the leaguemeet will be very compet-itive between Archbold(defending champs),Bryan and Evergreen,” hesaid. “Patrick Henry hassome talented jumpers andsprinters returning andcould play a role in deter-mining who will win theleague meet. Swanton alsoreturns some talentedsprinters this year and willfactor into who walksaway with the leaguecrown.”

The total numbers on theteam is both a plus and aminus for the season, ac-cording to Fisher.
“We have 37 girls outfor the team with 16 re-turning letterwinners,” shestated. “We will be solid incertain events, but in otherevents we will need theyounger girls to gain someexperience and providesome good performances.”
Fisher then stated howthe numbers don’t work inher favor.
“Our biggest weaknessright now is the lack ofnumbers in the upperclass-men to lead the youngergirls,” Fisher mentioned.“We have eight upper-classmen and 29 under-
classmen on the team.Fortunately, the upper-classmen have great lead-ership skills, but we needthe younger girls to stepup for the team again thisyear like they have in thepast and provide somestrong performances in alot of different areas suchas pole vault, long jumpand hurdles.”
Fisher then listed agroup of teams who couldsnag the NWOAL girlstrack title.
“The NWOAL is alwaysa very competitive leaguewith Liberty Center,Archbold and PatrickHenry always fieldingsome very strong teams. As a coaching staff, weknow that the girls willhave to work hard andhave some great perform-ances to place well in theleague.”

Swanton baseballbuilding momentum
After an encouraging end to the2012 season, the Swanton baseballteam will look to improve on theirwin total. In the final three leaguegames of 2012, the Bulldogs beatPatrick Henry to knock them out ofsecond place, dropped a tight 1-0decision to league unbeaten Bryanand fell to league runner-upWauseon 12-7.
“The 2012 season ended with alot of momentum for Swantonbaseball, said coach JohnnyKontak. “We have six returningstarters, with four young playersready to step into the holes left bygraduating seniors.”
The biggest loss from last seasonwill be Kyle Ringle, a first-teamAll-NWOAL honoree. Also goneare Travis Pelland and Mark Parker.
Leading the returnees are a pairof all-league players. Brian Reevesis a two-year letterwinner whopitches and plays second base, thirdbase and shortstop.
Clayton Ringle will catch for theBulldogs if and when he is able toreturn following an injury late inthe basketball season. Both playerswere honorable mention all-league.
Also back are outfielder JacobPeabody, Kyle Dockery (OF, 2B,1B) and Brady Harlett (3B, SS, C).
“This will be the third seasonmany of these kids have played forour coaching staff, and we feel likeit is time to have high expectationsfor success, Kontak said. “We willbe strong in the field defensively, which will keep us in every gameon our schedule.” Offensively, thecoach said that they some fire pow-er to score runs but will also be ableto play small ball when needed.
“I am incredibly excited aboutthis group of players, and with theright amount of fight, we can takeSwanton baseball to a whole newlevel,” said Kontak. “As always, ournumber one priority will be repre-senting Swanton High School in apositive way both on and off thefield.”
The coach sees Bryan andWauseon as the early favorites inthe NWOAL. He said a secondgroup of teams including Swanton,
Archbold, Evergreen and PatrickHenry should have good years andcontend for the top third of theleague.
“The NWOAL is a league with arich history and this year will be nodifferent, said Kontak. “It will be asstrong as ever, with every game be-ing an all out battle.”
Swanton will open the season onSaturday when they host Scott in adoubleheader. The Dogs then faceEvergreen on Monday.

Solid core back for boys trackDespite some key losses, the
Swanton boys track and fieldteam will return a solid core ofathletes for the 2013 season.Eight letterwinners are back forthe Bulldogs, who won six dualmeets and the OtsegoInvitational, placed second atthe Gibsonburg Invitational andfifth at the NWOAL tourna-ment.
Points lost with the gradua-tion of Ric Roe will need to bereplaced if the Dogs hope tomove up in the league stand-ings. Roe won both the 1600and 3200 meters at theNWOAL championships andplaced eighth in the state in the3200.
Cain Leathers, who wasfourth in the 1600 also graduat-ed, along with fellow leagueplacers Jacob Brehmer andMimmo Lytle.
“I think we have some indi-viduals who can be very com-petitive in the NWOAL if theyimprove the way we expectthem to,” said 10-year coachSteve Brehmer.
Jordan Schnabel is one of theleading returnees, havingplaced fourth in the 200m andfifth in the high jump at lastyear's league meet.
“In the field events, JordanSchnabel and newcomerRobbie Gilsdorf both cleared
5’10” in the high jump last yearand we expect them to go high-er this year,” said coachBrehmer. “We have four longjumpers in Thomas Bryant,Anthony (A.J.) Reyes, TrevorPrentice and Bryce McCombwho have jumped in the mid toupper 19s last spring and weexpect at least a couple to hitthe 20-foot mark this year.
Brehmer feels the strength ofthis year's squad is the sprint-ers. He believes Thomas Bryanthas the potential to challengefor the league title at 100m and400m after placing in both lastseason as a freshman.
“We are counting on ourthree senior sprinters, TrevorPrentice, Jordan Schnabel, andAndrew Foore to step up thisyear and lead our program,” hesaid. They also have solid run-ners in A.J. Reyes, and BruceRayoum, and freshmen ByrceMcComb will be in the mix aswell.
The Bulldogs' distance grouptook a hit with the loss of Roe,Leathers and Brehmer. Thecoach said they are counting onCollin O'Riordon, who wassixth in the league at 800m lastyear to lead a young group ofrunners. Other distance runnerswill include Cory Roe,Gilsdorf, Jacob Cessna andNate Timpe.
The winterlike March weath-er has reeked some havoc onthe Dogs. will be in the mix aswell. “With the worst Marchweather I have ever experi-enced as a track coach I can’ttell you what events they will
all run and it may be late April, early May before we get it allfigured out,” Brehmer said.
As for the NWOAL race, thecoach puts Archbold andWauseon as the favorites, say-ing they should be solid
throughout their lineup. Headded that Bryan returns somepromising runners as well.
Swanton is scheduled to openthe season at home against onApril 4.

Remesik and distance run-ners Quintin Reiser, JustinMourget and GrantKnierim.

Lydia Schmucker andMickenna Schweinhagen.”

Remesik and distance run-ners Quintin Reiser, JustinMourget and GrantKnierim.

Lydia Schmucker andMickenna Schweinhagen.”

Remesik and distance run-ners Quintin Reiser, JustinMourget and GrantKnierim.

Lydia Schmucker andMickenna Schweinhagen.”

Clayton Ringle returns for the Swanton baseball team. (File pho-to)
Solid core back for boys trackDespite some key losses, the
Swanton boys track and fieldteam will return a solid core ofathletes for the 2013 season.Eight letterwinners are back forthe Bulldogs, who won six dualmeets and the OtsegoInvitational, placed second atthe Gibsonburg Invitational andfifth at the NWOAL tourna-ment.

Remesik and distance run-ners Quintin Reiser, JustinMourget and GrantKnierim.

Lydia Schmucker andMickenna Schweinhagen.”

Pettisville’s Alex Roth retruns to help a Pettisvillebaseball team that won seven games last season.(File photo)
Pettisville baseballbrings back experience
The Pettisville baseballteam brings back nine let-terwinners from a teamthat went 7-17 last seasonand 4-6 in BBC play.
“We have a lot of expe-rience back from last yearwith nine returning letter-men,” said coach PaulBishop, who is back foran eighth season. “Ourdefense should be astrength especially up themiddle with LoganNofziger holding downthe catching duties, TateKauffman playing short, and Jacob Roth in center-field.”
Jacob Roth was an hon-orable mentional all-BBC
player a year ago, whileAlex Roth was named tothe first team. Cam Norriswas named second teamand Nofziger was alsohonorable mention.
Also back is TannerRufenacht, Kauffman, EliKing, Noah Miller andDustin Nofziger.
“The rest of our out-field will be strong aswell with Alex Roth,Tanner Rufenacht, EliKing and Dustin Nofzigerall seeing action,” contin-ued Bishop. “Noah Millerwill provided stability atfirst base while CamNorris, Eli King, AlexRoth and Tanner
Rufenacht all seeing timeat either second or thirdbase.”
The primary concernthis season for theBlackbirds is pitching.Alex Roth and Norris areback, but the Pettisvillecoach feels that someonewill have to step up andhelp out.
“Pitching depth will bethe primary weakness forus this season,” statedBishop. “We have two ofour top pitchers back thisseason in Alex Roth andCam Norris, but we willneed a few guys to step upand provide quality in-nings to help keep us in
games. Tanner Rufenacht,Jacob Roth, TateKauffman, and NoahMiller are all showingconsistency in locatingpitches to provide the in-nings we will need.”
Bishop did not list a fa-vorite to win the BBCbaseball title but did saywhat it would take for histeam to compete.
“We hope to compete inevery game we play,”closed Bishop. “We haveexperience back, whichshould help us in closeballgames.”
Pitcher is back, butBirds have spots to fill
Delaney Nofziger is back for her fourth year in the circle for the Pettisvillesoftball team. (File photo)
The Pettisville softball team has somespots to fill for coach Kendra Stahl. Theteam lost catcher Lauren Frey, first base-man Ashlyn Bontrager, third basemanLexie King, centerfielder Kate Nofziger, rightfielder Taylor Kruse and utilityplayer Adi Bruner.
“We lost a lot to graduation last year, but we have nine solid incoming fresh-man,” said Stahl. “We have our pitcherback for the fourth straight year.Delaney (Nofziger) has pitched all ofour games since her freshman year. Shehas grown into a solid leader and under-stands the game very well.”
The second team all-BBC pitcherleads a list of returees that includes sen-ior infielder Mackenzie Riegsecker, jun-iors Emily Hubby, Taylor D’Alelio andOlivia Wright, plus sophomore Johanna
Roth. The team was also dealt a blow when
Audra Klopfenstein suffered a knee in-jury and will miss the season.
“We will be a very young team,” stat-ed Stahl. “We will only have threestarters returning from last season. Wealso lost of our top players and hitters,Audra Klopfenstein, due to a knee in-jury.
The losses will not keep theBlackbirds from contending for the BBCcrown.
“I think Hilltop will be a solid teamthis season but the league will be verycompetitive this year,” added Stahl. “Wehope to compete for the title, but I knowthis is a tough conference. Although wewill be a young team, I think that we willbe competitive.”
years so that the exact fac-tors added to a school’senrollment and any kinksin the data entry, collectionand final formulas can beworked out.
“I want to thank the ad-ministrators from WayneCountry who worked co-operatively on finding analternative to separatetournaments and to theOHSAA Board ofDirectors for allowing the
new proposal to be placedon the referendum ballot,”Ross said. “I truly believethe climate from the lastvote on separating thetournaments has changedand this year’s vote wouldhave come down to thewire.
