Northwest Skåne is in the heart of the Öresund region, just an hour from Copenha-gen and one hour by plane from Stockholm. This truly is a place for those with a lust for life, full of new experiences and unforgettable memories. The distances from one place to the next may be short, but there’s plenty of diversity. Fish for perch one day, then sip on an exotic drink beneath the palms at Tropical Beach the next. Nature has a lot to answer for: our passion for good food, our creativity and our love of adventure. We have cliffs which are so dramatic they’ve been described as oth-erworldly, as well as magical forests, unspoilt lakes and mile after mile of beaches. We also have two islands, with a wealth of nature, culture and art, and an incredible number of golf courses - only Florida has a higher concentration! What’s more, the mild climate means you can play all year round. Northwest Skåne is often called the ceramics capital of Sweden. The creativity here is striking - not just in terms of ceramics, but also when it comes to design, art and handicrafts. Our creative passion can be both seen and felt, and combines tradition with innovation. Food is a big part of our lust for life in this part of Skåne. Home-grown produce has always been important to us, and our restaurants offer both classic Skåne fare and dishes with an international twist, always prepared by gourmets who understand that the way to the heart is via the stomach.

Welcome to Northwest Skåne - enjoy!

Skåne traditionsStep over the threshold into a time gone by at one of our authentic inns, where the passing of the years has left its mark on the menu. One of our best-known inns - and one of the oldest in Sweden - is Margretetorp Gästgifvargård, situated on the slopes of Hallandsåsen near Ängelholm. Here, the traditional Swedish smörgåsbord buffet is served daily all year round. Spångens Gästgivaregård in Ljungbyhed earned a place in popular culture when actor Ed-vard Persson used it as a film location in the 1940s. Here, you can enjoy authentic local dishes such as goose blood soup and egg cake. Nearby is Röstånga Gästgivaregård, first opened as an inn in 1647! If you’re travelling to Kullabygden, don’t miss Tunneberga Gästgifvaregård in Jonstorp, which serves a traditional taste of Skåne in a genuine 18th-century setting.

Nothing compares to a coffee break at a cosy café. But then again, Swedes are among the world’s biggest consumers of coffee! Find your own favourite from among our list of the best cafés. Why Not Café, at Landskrona Citadellet: Drag artiste Lasse Flinckman’s new café, in a fabulous setting. >> Tel. +46 (0)418 244 44

Ellens Café, Kullaberg: Enjoy a cup of cof-fee to the sound of waves breaking against the rocks just ten metres from the terrace. >> www.ransvik.se

Café Killeröd, Båstad: Try the house specia-lity - apple meringue tart with vanilla sauce - as you take in the stunning sea views. >> www.café-killerod.se

Solbackens Våffelbruk, Båstad: Along the beautiful Italian Road. Waffles prepared ac-cording to a traditional recipe. >> www.solbacken.eu

Flickorna Lundgren, Skäret, Arild: A truly unmissable classic. 37,000 vanilla pastries are baked here every year! >> www.fl-lundgren.se

Lotta på Åsen, Ljungbyhed: Yet another clas-sic, with waffles baked using a 19th-century recipe. >> www.lottapaasen.se

Skvattemölla, Klippan: This mill by the River Pinnå is 300 years old, and is now a cosy café. >> www.skvattemolla.se

Byskolan, Gånarp, Ängelholm: Home-baked treats in a charming old schoolhouse, with a glass summer house that seats an entire coach party. >> www.byskolan.se

Ebbas Fik, Helsingborg: Centrally-located café with a 1950s atmosphere and enormous squares of chocolate cake. >> www.ebbasfik.se

Pålsjö Paviljongen: Freshly-baked waffles and other treats, in the heart of the Pålsjö Forest. Musical entertainment on certain days. >> www.paviljongen.com

Here, fantastic sea views are the perfect accompaniment to delicious dishes. Take a front-row seat alongside the Öresund Sound - a spectacular site, wha-

tever the weather. Pumphuset in Borstahu-sen combines inspirational art and fine dining right on the water’s edge, while the whole of Helsingborg’s promenade is a culinary oasis, centred around the buzzing North Harbour. The Kajkanten Restaurant & Cocktail Bar in Höganäs Harbour offers excellent lunches and enticing cocktails. The peaceful towns of Mölle and Arild are home to plenty of popular restau-rants, such as Strand in Arild with its views of the town, the harbour and the sea, and anyone passing near Ängelholm should stop off to eat at the historic Klitterhus in Skälderviken - just eight metres from the beach! Båstad and Tore-kov are two summer destinations with a plet-hora of waterside restaurants. Popular choices include Hotell Skansen’s trendy Restaurang Sand and Hotell & Restaurang Hovs Hallar at the peak of the impressive Hovs Hallar nature reserve. 8Don’t miss... a trip on one of the ferries linking Sweden with Denmark. Stay onboard when everyone else gets off, and enjoy good food with a view of the two countries’ coastlines.

Culinary finesseThanks to a passion for eating well, Skåne has more than its fair share of award-winning

chefs and popular restaurants. Per Dahlberg, chef at Gastro in the centre of Helsingborg, creates gourmet delights. This is one of the White Guide’s top choices, which also features the Grand Hôtel in picturesque Mölle, Sand at Hotel Skansen in Båstad, Hamnkrogen on Hven (which serves delicious Hven plaice!) and the beautiful Sofiero Slottsrestaurang. 8What is the White Guide? The White Guide lists Sweden’s top 500 restaurants, and is an indispensible guide to excellent - and often regional - food.

Unique restaurantsDining at Farbror Elofs Skafferi in Billeberga is guaranteed to be an unusual experience, with flea-market gems jostling for space with culina-ry delights in a former barn. For a sparkling sea view, head to Kock-Johan with its panoramic windows facing Örkelljunga’s Lake Hjälmsjön, while at the beautiful Skälderviken in Ängel-holm you can admire the works of local artists as you dine at Carl Fredrik. 8Don’t miss... dining out in Helsingborg, which has one of Sweden’s highest densities of restaurants and menus from every corner of the world. The eateries around Mariatorget serve everything from simple home cooking to sushi. Helsing Bar & Matsalar, housed in a building dating from the turn of the 20th century, has a trendy international feel. Sip a glass of cham-pagne in the pink bar!

A cup of coffee, please!

A cause for celebrationSkåne is a part of the country where food traditio-nally takes centre stage, and we celebrate our festive occasions with fantastic feasts. The first big culi-nary event of the year is Easter, when all manner of exciting dishes take their places on the menus of the region’s restaurants: Skåne egg cake, duck breast, lamb and delicate asparagus. June is the time of midsummer celebrations, with their ancient Swedish traditions. Girls of all ages plait garlands into their hair ready to dance in a ring around the maypole. Traditional midsummer delicacies include herrings, schnapps and strawberries. Autumn is celebrated with the flavours of Skåne, when many restaurants and inns serve Mårten Gås (St Martin’s Day goose dinners), with goose blood soup, roasted goose and apple cake with vanilla sauce. Mårten Gås (St Martin’s Day) is celebrated on 10 Novem-ber, but most restaurants serve goose dinners for se-veral weeks. The calendar ends with the festival that we celebrate the most and the longest: Christmas. Innkeepers decorate their inns with straw goats, Christmas trees and twinkling candles. Christmas buffets are both popular and varied. Most include traditional dishes such as homemade meatballs, smoked eel, herrings, ham, rice pudding and a who-le host of desserts. >> To find out about more culinary events, farm shops and local producers, go to www.skanenordvast.com/mat

Visit organic farmsThe autumn Ecotour is an opportunity to discover the region’s organic farms. A number of farms will be open to visitors, demonstrating and talking about orga-nic production. Take the opportunity to try locally-grown delicacies, get some tips and advice for growing your own produce, and pick your own berries and vegetables. A farm visit is an exciting ex-perience for children, and they may even get the chance to go for a ride on a trac-tor or meet the farm animals. To find out which farms are taking part in the tour and what activities are available, visit >> www.ekobonden.se

Organic food walkThe multiple award winning Bjärhus in Klippan was one of the first farms to focus on organic farming. Join an organic food walk through the fields of sheep. A guide takes you to historic countryside spots where you can try the farm’s delicious produce, with a magnificent buffet spread including freshly-baked bread and tasty sheep’s cheeses. The tour takes around 2 1/2 hours and costs SEK 250 per person.>> www.bjarhus.se

Bee safariWhat is a safari in the African savannah compared with a bee safari on Söderåsen? Gillastig Honung ar-ranges this unusual safari tour for children and adults who, dressed in protective clothing, can peek into a beehive and get to see busy worker bees going about their business. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the queen bee herself. The tour ends with refreshments at the farm shop. Of course, you can then buy a jar of honey to take home. Or why not treat yourself to some lavender sugar, beeswax candles and preserved spruce shoots!>> www.gillastighonung.se

A taste of Northwest SkåneNorthwest Skåne is a culinary goldmine. Despite its relatively small size, the region boasts a wide range of local produce - everything from wine to pasta. it’s hardly surprising that this part of Skåne is often compared with culinary regions such as Tuscany or Provence. browse among the offerings of local growers and farm shops, and savour the area’s unforgettable flavours.

As you drive around Northwest Skåne, you’ll soon notice that you’re never far from a vegetable grower.

Page 9: sweden

www.skanenordvast.com 9www.skanenordvast.com

TThe Bjäre Peninsula is blessed with high-quality ingredients, enchanting scenery and dedicated food producers. Here, 40 or so potato growers have united to elevate the humble new potato to become a true gourmet delicacy. All manner of different varieties are grown, each with their own unique flavour. Some of these are even used as the main ingredient in the world’s first new potato vodka - Karlsson’s New Vodka, available in Gold or Vintage varieties! 8To do: Bjäre Hembygd arranges all kinds of interesting activities - experience being a farmer for a day, try potato planting, or enjoy a new potato vodka-tasting session in a barn.

The island of Hven - Skåne’s pantryHven is the small island that’s big on taste. Just a short distance from where the ferry arrives, the goat cheese dairy’s goats graze on the lush green grass. The dairy produces a variety of cheeses, which are made entirely without chemical ad-ditives, and you can buy these in the shop along with products such as goat’s milk soap. Hvens Durum produces pasta, bread and flour using durum wheat grown on the island, while Hvens Glassfabrik makes creamy ice-cream using its own recipe and natural flavourings. 8To do: Spirit of Hven is currently distil-ling whisky with a unique taste of the island. Until this is ready, you can sample vodka and gin from the distillery. Guided tours are avai-lable by prior arrangement.

Green and wholesomeAs you drive around Northwest Skåne, you’ll soon notice that you’re never far from a vegeta-ble grower. There’s no shortage of wholesome produce here! Tomatens Hus has its own café,

while Tåstarpstomaten and Viken Tomater are just a couple of the names producing sweet, juicy crops of tomatoes in every colour and size imaginable. Varalövs Gårdsbutik sells twenty different varieties of potato and home-grown asparagus in early spring, and Saxtorp Svamp grows mushrooms without the use of chemical pesticides, selling them at its own farm shop. And don’t miss Helsingborg’s exotic fruit and vegetable market on Gustav Adolfs Torg, fea-turing healthy produce from all around the world. 8To do: Pick your own strawberries at Plantagen during the summer months. Look out for the signs.

Locally-reared meatEating meat from local farms that care about their livestock and never compromise on quality is a true culinary delight. Brunnby Boställe sells beef at its farm shop from its own traditionally-reared cattle - everything from whole fillets to sliced meat. Bjärhus Farm Shop in Klippan has won awards for its organic approach, while Kulla Lamm near Skäret in Kullabygden sells locally-reared lamb and other lamb products. In a beautiful setting at the foot of Söderåsen, Bonnarps Hjortgård breeds deer in a natural environment - call in at the farm to buy meat, or spend the night at the farm’s B&B and enjoy venison products for breakfast. Landskrona-based Stefan Pålsson’s exquisite salmon has even been served at the Nobel Banquet. 8To do: Take a guided tour of Sweden’s biggest ostrich farm, Evas Strutsar, just outside Ängelholm. The farm shop sells all manner of ostrich products, from fillets, mince and sliced meat to egg-shell lamps and feather dusters.

Liquid refreshmentSkåne’s mild climate has proven to be ideal for growing vines, and one of the locations in Northwest Skåne where vineyards can be found is Kullahalvöns Vingård near Höganäs. The vine growers offer tours of the vineyard on which they explain all about the cultivation process. Pure apple juice, made without additives and using apples grown by local farms and private growers, has been sold at Kullabygdens Musteri for generations. The juice is available in a variety of different flavours.

Gourmet shopsThe countryside and the towns have many farm shops and delicatessens to tempt the taste buds. Oldsbergs Ost in the centre of Höganäs is a cheese lover’s paradise with around a hundred different cheeses from around Europe, as well as air-dried delicacies, jams, exclusive olive oils and much more besides. The Tant Grön farm shop on the Bjäre Peninsula also sells cheeses, flavoured pasta from France and locally-grown raspberries. Fenix Konditori in Röstånga is a nostalgic rural shop with a range of bakery goods, cheeses, delicacies and teas from every corner of the world. The popular delicatessen Smakfullt is worth a visit if you’re passing near Landskrona, while Helsingborg’s Gastronomi-butiken sells handmade pasta, fresh truffles and meat of the finest quality. And don’t miss Tasty House in the Söder district of Helsingborg with its exotic range of nuts and baklava. 8Tip: Château Forêt in Helsingborg bakes delicious bread, while Café Killeröd bakes wal-nut bread and “Bob’s special”, which contains pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds and millet.

An open mind and a sense of playfulness are the key to holiday fun. Let the younger members of the family lead to the way to exciting, raucous and entertaining places and experiences - everything from crazy golf to summer tobogganing.

Hole in oneMost of the larger towns have minigolf courses. Particularly fun courses can be found at Råå Campsite in Helsingborg, Råbocka Campsite in Ängelholm, First Camp Torekov and First Camp Mölle, the latter of which recreates settings from the Kulla Peninsula! If you’d like to play on one of Sweden’s oldest minigolf courses, head for Hjelmsjö Campsite in Örkelljunga, where the course dates back to 1931.

Children have a natural ability to find the fun in nature. See our beautiful forests and long sandy beaches through their eyes, wit-hout stress or time pressure. Play

follow-my-leader among the logs and boulders, fly a kite by the coast where the wind is at its strongest, and fish for crabs from the jetties. For a completely different natural experience, try inspection trolley cycling along the disused railway between Klippan and Ljungbyhed. The city of Helsingborg has created 14 themed free play areas where children can practise their ba-lancing skills, play at pirates, make music and discover nature - find out where they are at www.helsingborg.se. If a normal slide doesn’t offer enough of a thrill, try Southern Sweden’s only summer tobogganing course at Kungsbyg-get - ideal for all ages! 8 Challenge the family... to a game of football golf, which is like minigolf but using a football instead of a golf club and golf ball. You’ll find courses at Saxtorp near Landskrona and on the island of Hven, both of which also organise pentathlons and decathlons.

Lively indoor playIf it’s too hot in the summer or too rainy in the autumn, there’s still plenty of fun to be had indoors. Busfabriken boasts 6,000 m2 of jungle-themed play area. Grown-ups can surf the net or enjoy a cup of coffee while the child-ren wear themselves out. The Karlslundsbadet adventure pool in Landskrona has a relaxation suite for adults and all manner of fun for kids, with a warm bubble pool, jet stream, rapids and water slides. We have a number of fascinating museums, too, including the Swedish Railway

Museum in Ängelholm, with model trains and a locomotive simulator to entertain visitors of all ages, and Ängelholm Aviation Museum, where children can climb into a real aeroplane. The Tycho Brahe Museum on Hven tells the story of the great astronomer and has a physics play park for younger children. The Beredskaps-museet Museum near Helsingborg is the only museum in Sweden to be housed in a World War Two underground bunker, while visitors to the Mining Museum in Bjuv can find out what exactly the Bjuv stegocephalia was. Landskrona Museum has plenty of exhibitions and activities for younger visitors, as does Dunkers Kulturhus in Helsingborg, where you can follow Malte the Mouse on a treasure hunt through the Weight of Water and Fragment exhibitions. 8 Challenge the family... at Båstad’s ultra-modern Xbowl bowling and sports centre. Here you can try your hand at bowling, squash or pa-del, a cross between tennis and squash. Come to Landskrona to play bowls, curling and short mat bowls, which is like regular bowls but with bowls that are not quite spherical. Give it a go!

Go wild!Everyone loves animals. At Tropikariet, you can step right into an African savannah lands-cape - complete with meerkats! Here, the exotic creatures have been grouped according to where in the world they come from. Some are behind glass, while others roam free. Fågelparken i Helsingborg (Bird Park) is home to all man-ner of colourful birdlife, as well as kangaroos, lemurs and tortoises. Hillesgården near Östra Ljungby is a fun-packed park that includes an unusual mini zoo, and you can take a break with waffles in the café. At Hembygdsparken in Ängelholm you can wander among pigs and goats, run around in the playground and enjoy refreshments on the lawn. During the summer, children’s shows are staged at the outdoor thea-tre, and you can take the Pyttetåget train to the park from the town centre. 8 Challenge the family... to identify the animal from its droppings - one of the many fun activities on offer at Fredriksdal over the course of the year. Fredriksdal has something for everyo-ne - including grandparents, who will appreciate the old buildings, the manor house, the dazzling floral displays and the rare agricultural breeds.

Natural Nature has so much to offer: creativity, adventure and the chance to relax and enjoy the moment in peace and quiet. we have cliffs that are so dramatic they’ve been described as otherworldly, mountains just waiting to be climbed and ravi-nes to excite thrill-seekers. we also have enchanted forests, unspoilt lakes, mile after mile of sandy beaches and golden fields of rapeseed. what more could you ask for? welcome to the best of what nature has to offer in Skåne.

Mighty Kullaberg at the tip of the Kulla Peninsula, with its steep gneiss cliffs ri-sing 70 metres straight up from

the sea, is one of Sweden’s most popular nature reserves. This is a walker’s paradise, with clearly-marked paths passing by cliffs, leafy beech fo-rests, fenland, bogs and open headland. The area of sea around Kullaberg is also part of the nature reserve and is a great spot for diving. Under the water there is a diving route with information about life beneath the surface of the sea - put on your snorkel and follow the signs. 8To do: Hike, bird-watch, dive, climb, visit artist Lars Vilks’ spectacular works of art Nimis and Arx - there’s plenty to do here! Start with a visit to Kullaberg Visitors’ Centre at the light-house, which just so happens to be the brightest

in Scandinavia. Here you will find information, exhibitions and guides who offer tours such as daily cave walks during the summer.

Spectacular SöderåsenThis wilderness area features a wealth of peaks, valleys, steep ravines, rare animals and wildlife, and shady forests. The variety of wildlife is un-paralleled in Skåne, and since 2001 part of the ridge has been designated a national park. The main entrance to Söderåsen National Park is via the spectacular ravine in Skäralid. There is also an entrance at Röstånga, where the enchanting Lake Odensjön can be found. 8To do: The main entrance has a manned visitors’ centre with exhibitions, information about walking trails and guides who run tours during the summer. Take the opportunity to eat at Skäralid Restaurant, which uses locally-produced and organic ingredients wherever possible.

The heights of HallandsåsHallandsåsen, the northernmost of Skåne’s horsts, stretches from Hovs Hallar to Örkelljunga, reach-ing its peak at Högalteknall, 226 metres above sea level. In the 17th century, parts of this ridge were the haunts of pro-Danish guerrillas, known as the Snapphane, fighting against the Swedish occupying powers in the Dano-Swedish war. The ridge features attractive beech and spruce forests, as well as open fields and agricultural countryside. Where Hallandsåsen meets the sea on the Bjäre Peninsula, the spectacular cliffs of Hovs Hallar rise up, offering dizzying views. 8To do: The tourist information office has maps of hiking paths. Why not explore the Rödhög Nature Reserve with its 200-year-old beech trees, the Gudahovet burial field, the Snibe Stua cave (which, according to legend, was the home of a giant named Snibe), and the Snapphane stables in Trollehallar where the Snapphane hid their prisoners.

Two pearls of the seaHven (7.5 km2): You can reach this island in the middle of the Öresund Sound between Denmark and Sweden by ferry from Landskrona. Just a short walk away from Bäckviken where the ferry arrives, 1,200 yellow bicycles are available for hire. And a bicycle is the best way of getting around the island and visiting its sites: the sheer cliff tops, the medi-aeval church of St. Ibb, the artists’ studios and the farm shops. There are also minigolf, golf and football golf courses. If you want to stay the night, there are homely B&Bs, a youth hostel, cottages and guest houses. Alternatively, stay at the campsite with its wonderful views of the Öresund Sound. 8To do: The astronomer Tycho Brahe lived on the island in the 16th century. The Tycho Brahe Me-morials include a museum, a reconstructed renaissan-ce garden and a physics play park, where you can find out more about his fascinating life and discoveries.

Hallands Väderö (3 km2): Take a boat to Hallands Väderö from the picturesque harbour of Torekov. Those who enjoy sunbathing and swimming will find sandy beaches, cliffs and bays right near where the boat moors up. The island also has a café serving simple meals. Follow the hiking trails through fairy-tale forests and mystical marshland, past meadows full of sea thrift and along stunning cliffs. The path to the island’s lighthouse is easily accessible, making it suitable for those with pushchairs. Since the is-land is a nature reserve, camping is not permitted. 8To do: The rocks around Hallands Väderö are home to one of Sweden’s wild seal colonies. If you go on a guided seal safari organised by Väderötrafiken, you can watch them basking on the rocks near Kapellhamn.

A modern-day treasure huntHunt for hidden treasure by GPS on beautiful Söderåsen. If you don’t have your own GPS, you can hire one from the tourist information office in Röstånga. The treasure hunt passes through areas of natural beauty that you won’t reach via the marked footpaths. Fun for all the family! You can also follow a number of hiking routes by GPS on Söderåsen and at Kullaberg.>> www.geocaching.se

1Come and make the most of the light early summer nights! The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation will be arranging trips to various rural locations on the night between World Environ-ment Day and Sweden’s national day, 5-6 June, to mark Nature Night 2010. Join the society’s Söderåsen branch, listen to the song of the night birds, and discover how the sounds and sights of nature change as dusk falls on a summer’s night. >> Find out more about the activities available at www.naturskyddsforeningen.se/soderasen

Paddling alongHave a fantastic adventure on our rivers. Paddle a canoe along at your own pace, and marvel at the scenery which - in certain places along the River Rönne - is said to look like Skåne’s answer to the Amazon. There are plenty of companies that hire out canoes - ask at the tourist information offices, who can also point out camping spots for a break or an overnight stop. 8 Tip: Paddle your way around the rocky coast of Kullaberg in a sea canoe. Mölle Kajak- & Klättercenter hires out canoes and offers crash courses for begin-ners. No previous experience necessary. >> www.mollekajakcenter.se

Try a cycling holidayWe miss so much as we rush along the roads by car. Instead, why not get on your bike for a few days on a fantastic cycling holiday. Northwest Skåne has plenty of cycling trails to choose from. Contact the tourist information offices to find out about the best cycling routes and bicycle hire. The best way to discover the island of Hven is by bike, while the Kulla Peninsula, Söderåsen and the Bjäre Peninsula all have more than their fair share of spectacular cycling trails. In Ängelholm, Lergöks-rundan (the Ocarina Route) winds its way past forests, the town and the coast. 8 Cycling packages: Choose a ready-made cycling package complete with rou-te descriptions and overnight accommodation on the Bjäre Peninsula or the Kulla Peninsula, through Ängelholm or around Lake Västersjön. Contact Ängelholm Tourist Information Office for more information. >> www.turist.engelholm.se>> www.hoganas.se>> www.bastad.com

All at seaExperience life on the ocean wave! Sailing courses are arranged during the summer for adults and children, all along the coast. Take the opportunity to learn something new or brush up on your ex-isting skills. The really adventurous can try their hand at kite surfing - surfing powered by a large kite. Lundåkra Bay near Landskrona is one of the few places in Skåne where you can kite surf in almost any wind direction. MB Kiteskola offers courses and tester lessons. There are also excellent kite surfing waters around Vikingstrand Beach in Helsingborg and off the Bjäre Peninsula.>> www.mbkiteskola.se

Try your luck at fishingThe Öresund Sound is a sport fishing mecca. Fishing boats set off from up and down the coast all year round, with equipment to hire and skip-pers who can offer help and advice. The region’s rivers are also ideal for fishing, with sea trout in the River Råå, perch and pike in the River Saxå, and salmon trout and salmon in the River Rönne and the River Bäljaneå. For a more unusual fish-ing experience, head for the moat around Citadel-let in Landskrona where you can fish in Sweden’s first saltwater “put and take” waters. There are also great fishing experiences to be had at the region’s lakes, with fish such as perch, zander and roach. Örkelljunga has plenty of fishing lakes, and those who enjoy fly fishing and spin fishing should head for Lake Odensjön on Söderåsen. A number of fishing camps are held where you can hire equip-ment, stay overnight and grill your catch over an open fire. Ask at the tourist information office. 8Tip: 10 July is the date of the Lergöken Cup, a major fishing competition for all the fa-mily on the River Rönne, which runs through the centre of Ängelholm.

Whether you’re an experienced rider or have never been on a horse before, there’s a riding tour that’s perfect for you. What better way to experience the countryside of Skåne, all year round! For example, you can go riding on Hallandsås, Söderåsen, the Kulla Penin-sula or Hven. Contact the tourist informa-tion offices to find out more. 8PACKAGE 1: Join Söderåsens Tur-ridning for their special tour for experienced riders! We meet at the stable, prepare the horses together, and then go out into the forest for an hour and let the horses enjoy a good long gallop! Price: SEK 300 per per-son (weekdays only). For more information and additional riding tours - including for inexperienced riders - go to >> www.turridning.se 8 PACKAGE 2: Fitness riding with Spelmansgården’s Icelandic horses on Hal-landsås. A year-round

The coastline features sandy beaches, cliffs and pebbly beaches. Here you will find hid-den away spots to sit and read a paperback, as well as action-packed party beaches with drinks and music. The crystal-clear sea water and the mirror-like lakes are perfect for swim-ming and water sports.

A 155 kilometre-long coastline stretches from Landskrona in the south to Båstad in the north, for recreation all year round. Take a bracing au-tumn walk along the beach, then have a bite to eat at one of the many year-round restaurants. During the summertime, the beach is ideal for sunbathing and swimming.

Long beachesLandskrona has child-friendly beaches at Bor-stahusen and Ålabodarna, a shallow sandy be-ach in the centre of town, and the Citadellbadet open-air swimming pool with filtered salt water from the Öresund Sound. Helsingborg has a string of beaches, child-friendly Örby meadows,

the exotic Tropical Beach, trendy Fria Bad and surfer-friendly Vikingstrand, which also has a wheelchair-friendly jetty. Kullabygden’s liberated bathing culture was notorious in the early 1900s, with men and women swimming together, att-racting visitors from far and wide. Today, you can still come to the historic bathing spots at Ransvik and Mölle. Shallow beaches can be found at Far-hult, and Kvickbadet in the centre of Höganäs is also child-friendly. Ängelholm has six kilomet-res of sandy beach with a unique landscape of sand dunes - this truly is a beach-lover’s paradise. The area known as Sibirien also has an extremely long beach, where dogs can swim. Those looking for a party atmosphere should head for the Bjäre

Peninsula, where you’ll find parties and beach volleyball from morning through until late at night, while Malenbadet - the first heated salt-water pool in the Nordic region - boasts water slides, bubble fountains and other fun activities for young water babies. 8DK tip: North of Helsingør in Denmark, there are many pretty fishing villages with fine beaches and restaurants. Hornbæk and Gilleleje attract the most tourists, while Tisvildeleje’s ki-lometre-long sandy beach is also worth a visit.

what would a holiday be without a spot of shopping? Take the whole family to a shopping centre with everything under one roof, stroll through delightful town centres, find outlet bargains and explore one-off countryside boutiques. Northwest Skåne is also perfect for those with an eye for design!

For city-loversNorthwest Skåne has plenty of delightful town centres, with an exciting range of shops, cafés and restaurants. Helsingborg has 500 shops stretching from north to south. A shopping tour of the town begins on Kullagatan, the first pedestrianised street in the Nordic region, with plenty for fashion aficionados. Ängelholm also has lots of clothing shops, including exclusive boutiques. The town centre is a charming place for a stroll, and the town’s tourist information office even organises fashion tours! Båstad has a wide range of superb craft retailers and shops that open for the summer, while Höganäs and Landskrona have shops filled with all manner of beautiful objects.

The delights of the countrysideLet rural shops be your guide to the spectacular countryside of Northwest Skåne. Near Ängel-holm is Skånska Stearinljusfa-briken, which makes high quality candles by royal appointment and has one of Sweden’s biggest ranges of candles. Delightful shabby chic furnishings and fittings can be found at shops such as Slottstallets Möbler & Interiör near Höganäs and Fröken Lavendel in Rydebäck, which specialises in romantic French/Danish style. The old school in Saxtorp is now home to Anna & Heawen, a rural new and second-hand store selling old and new decorative items, jewellery and more, while Venpuls on Hven sells satin scarves from Laos and handmade woollen products. The region’s many craft shops include Byskolan in Gånarp and Svensk Slöjd’s Skå-ne outlet at Citadellet in Landskrona.

Bargains galoreThe Cedergren & Co plant nursery specialises in roses and clematises, and has earned an internatio-nal reputation for its old-fashioned roses. Bäckda-lens Handelsträdgård is an organic garden centre on the Bjäre Peninsula where you’ll find both com-mon varieties of herbs and vegetables and more unusual plants such as crisp Asian leaf vegetables and edible flowers. Mediterranean plants and fan-tastic earthenware pots can be found at Citron & Timjan near Helsingborg. Those looking for gar-den ornaments should head for Madame Plantier in Kågeröd, with its spectacular range of handmade pots, weather stations and engraved rocks.

Sensuous cultural experiencesA voyage of artistic discoveryTake an artistic tour of Northwest Skåne. Local talents and world-famous names are on show in the region’s art galleries and exhibitions. Right on the water’s edge in the idyllic fishing village of Borstahusen is Pumphuset, with its museum, art gallery and restaurant. Landskrona Art Gallery is many exhibitors’ favourite venue, with its sculpture park and Japanese garden. At the old sta-tion building in Teckomatorp, the Tapper-Popermajer Gallery showcases international contemporary art. Take the train - it stops right outside! And don’t miss Skäret Art Gallery, set in a traditional red fisherman’s hut by the sea in Arild - at just 25 m2, this is one of the world’s smallest art galleries.

que castle of Örenäs, with its captivating views of the Öresund Sound and the island of Hven. You can enjoy fine dining at the castle’s restau-rant, and even sleep like a king at the hotel. One of Sweden’s oldest manor houses, Krapperup Castle, also boasts fine sea views from its Kul-labygden setting. Exhibitions and concerts are staged in the art gallery and music hall, while the shop sells fine English soaps and attrac-tive pottery, and the coffee shop has tempting home-baked treats. The mediaeval stronghold of Tomarps Kungsgård in Kvidinge is home to an excellent art gallery, focusing on Swedish and international contemporary art. Storks wander around freely in the grounds, and refreshments are available in the courtyard. 8DK tip: One of Denmark’s top attractions is Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, which was de-signated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Getting there is easy - just take a ferry from Helsingborg.

Green destinationsFredriksdal Museums and Gardens is often de-scribed as a Skåne in miniature, and is home to Europe’s only provincial botanical gardens, a unique rose garden, old buildings, parks and rare agricultural breeds. All manner of activities for the whole family are organised throughout the year. The Flora Linnéa shop at Fredriks-dal also has Scandinavia’s widest selection of roses, so you’re bound to find your favourites. Beautifully situated at the end of the Bjäre Pe-ninsula are Norrviken Gardens, with a number of themed gardens to wander through such as the oriental terrace, the king’s ravine and the baroque garden. Stenestad Park on Söderåsen

is a new educational centre focusing on fruit and ber-ries, while on Hven you can step back in time by visiting the Tycho Brahe Memori-als. During his time on the island, astronomer Tycho Brahe laid out a magnificent renaissance garden. Nothing remains of the original gar-den, but it has recently been reconstructed using plants that were typical of the time. Another green desti-nation is Wideröra Café & Växter, a park where you can take a guided tour or wan-der around by yourself. Here you will also find art, craft and design exhibitions.

inspiring churchesDuring the summer, a num-ber of churches are open for visits. At some of these, guides will tell you all about the church’s his-tory. Particularly noteworthy churches include Brunnby Church, with its spectacular frescos, the triple-naved 15th-century Gothic St Mary’s Church in the heart of Helsingborg, with its collection of silverware housed in the sacristy, St Peter’s Church in Klippan, which was con-secrated in the 1960s and is renowned for its architecture, and the ruins at Rya of the former parish church, which was built some 800-900 years ago. Here, open-air services, christenings and weddings are held during the summer.

Green oases on the Garden TourFrom 4 to 6 June, there’s no need to sneak a glimpse at beautiful gardens through a gap in the hedge. This is when the annual Garden Tour (Trädgårdsrundan) is held, and people open up their own green oases to the public. You can visit perfectly manicured grand gardens and small terraced-house yards, inspired by eve-rything from old-fashioned colourful rose beds to exotic garden rooms with fragrant lemons and myrtle. The parks of Northwest Skåne and a number of gardening companies will also be treating visitors to a little extra. You can find a brochure with a map of participating gardens, as well as details of other gardening events during the year, at the tourist information offices and at www.tradgardsrundan.nu. 8DK Tip: Another garden tour is held on the other side of the Öresund Sound: “Åbne haver”. More than 470 Danish gardens will be taking part - some are open all summer, while others are only open on selected days. Find out more at www.haven.dk

An authentic Christmas market is also held in the court-yard, with all manner of treats and crafts for sale. Pumpkin soup is on sale in the café during the pumpkin festival, and visitors can make their own Halloween arrange-ments under the expert guidance of two florists. Royal splendour in 20102010 will be a royal year in more ways than one. Firstly, it is the 200th anniversary of Karl XIV Johan’s arrival in Sweden - in Helsingborg to be precise - which will be celebrated in various ways over the course of the year. Secondly, Crown Prin-cess Victoria will be getting married. The summer at Sofiero in Helsingborg will therefore be marked in regal style, with exhibitions, inspiration and designs on the theme of the royal wedding and the House of Bernadotte! On 19 June, the wedding will be bro-adcast on a big screen in front of the palace. Bring a picnic hamper, and be there when Crown Princess Victoria says “I do” to her fiancé Daniel.

Shopping tipsGood things come in threes, and Kulturmejan in Båstad has a gallery, a café and a shop under one roof. This is an inspiring place for creativity, and is also one of Sweden’s best-stocked paint shops, with a wide range of traditional and modern eco-friendly colours.>> www.kulturmejan.se

Exhibition on 10 Swedish DesignersIn the heart of Helsingborg, with the sea and Denmark on one side and the buzz of the town on the other, is Dunkers Kulturhus. This is an architecturally fascinating building with exciting content all year round. The centre hosts Swedish and international exhibi-tions, theatrical productions and concerts such as world music concerts. “Mönsterkraft!” (“Design power!”), an exhibition about the design collective 10 Swedish Designers, is a highlight of the year, and will be on show from 28 May until 3 October. In 1970, ten

young textile artists and designers had their best de-sign ideas rejected by the biggest textiles companies of the time for being “unmarketable, too challenging and uncommercial”. Together, they formed 10 Swe-dish Designers. The aim was to be able to follow and control the entire process themselves, from design sketches through to seeing their fabrics in the shops. Over the years, 10 Swedish Designers have presen-ted around 30 successful collections, with more than 700 fabrics and wallpapers produced. The group has exhibited in a number of Swedish museums and va-rious museums around the world.

Konstrundan Art tours - the sign of spring in SkåneSpring is when art tours see ceramists, craftspersons and artists invite the public into their studios and workshops. Follow the map to find your favourites, and draw inspiration from their day-to-day work with colour palettes and potter’s wheels. One good idea is to start with a visit to the joint exhibition at which every artist is represented by one work. The Northwest Skåne Art Tour, 2-11 April, is the biggest of the tours, and is a festival of art. Hundreds of thousands of visitors call in to see the 150 participants, representing a wealth of different techniques and perso-nalities. The joint exhibition is held at Landskrona Art Gallery. >> www.konstrundan.nu The West Skåne Art Tour, 2-11 April, has been arranged for almost thirty years by West Skåne’s Artist Society. One of West Skåne’s three joint exhibitions is held at Kulturhuset Björnen in Åstorp. The society also organises an annual autumn exhibition over All Saints’ weekend. >> www.vskg.se The Hven Art Tour, 13-16 May - diversity on a small island. When visiting the island of Hven, it’s best to leave your car on the mainland. During the Art Tour, visitors make their way around by bicycle (available for hire right near where the ferry docks), on foot, by bus or by horse-drawn cab. The joint exhibition is held at the island’s culture centre. >> www.venskulturhus.se

The ceramics capital of Swedenwitness the magic of a lump of clay being transformed into a beauti-ful cup and saucer, a work of art or a traditional pot in the hands of a potter. The craftsmen of Northwest Skåne were among the first to use clay to make practical, attractive items, and the area still has plenty of creative ceramicists to this day. Visit their studios and workshops, and draw inspiration from their creativity.

The ceramics capital of Sweden Northwest Skåne is often called the cera-mics capital of Sweden, partly due to its clay-rich history and partly because of the large number of potters who continue to spin their potter’s wheels and fire up their kilns. Many of them create useful objects, each in their own unique style. No two hand-made mugs are alike. Sixty or so ceramicists are listed in a brochure available from the tourist information offices or at www.keramikbygden.com. Put together your own ceramics tour, and hunt out unique pro-ducts at the pottery studios.

Kullabygden, with the town of Höganäs at its tip, is famous for its ceramics. Here, the streets are lined with signposts for the many workshops. Both modern and traditional items can be found at Kullabygden Keramik, and you can buy Höganäs stoneware pitchers for yourself and your friends. Kerstin Tillberg creates beautiful ceramics; her unique, colourful

teapots, dishes and other items are irresistible. Snuffa Håkansson’s ceramics are inspired by Kullaberg and the sea, and Lisa Wohlfart pro-duces her popular pieces at Mölle Krukmakeri. You’ll also find a delightful shop and a friendly café alongside the harbourside pottery.

Historically, Ängelholm is a pottery town, famous especially for its ocarinas. Here, Cilla Bjertner at Gjordkällarn produces stoneware pieces, as well as handmade birdbaths and other items from slightly coarser clay. The studio shop sells everything from teapots to piggy banks. Ceramist Jill Ekberg shares Konstorangeriet near Ängelholm with her artist husband, Ulf Ekberg. Her popular works include stoneware vases decorated with stag beetles and blue raku ware bowls adorned with little yellow bees.

Kvidinge and the surrounding area is known for its pottery, and ceramicist Thomas Anagrius

has written an award-winning book that pro-vides a fascinating account of the town’s pot-making traditions. The museum at Tomarps Kungsgård features a number of works from the Kvidinge area. Be sure to visit Birgitta Svensson’s studio to see her imaginative raku ware containers and dishes.

Sireköpinge Stengods on Söderåsen pro-duces unusual lamps and bowls with cut-out detailing, while in Helsingborg Greta Pott cre-ates ingenious thrown and sculpted stoneware. In the summer, she moves her studio from Fjä-restad to Fredriksdal Museums and Gardens. And don’t miss Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, with its beautiful nature reserve setting. Here, tradi-tional items and modern pieces are made using clay from its own site. There is a delightful little shop, as well as year-round events to stimulate the senses.

Get creative with clayTransforming a piece of clay into a bowl is a wonderful experience. At Keramik-verkstan in Jonstorp near Höganäs, both beginners and those with more experience can try their hand at pottery. Roll, coil or sculpt your own pieces. You pay per session, making this an ideal activity for visitors to Northwest Skåne. Phone in ad-vance to confirm availability.>> www.keramikverkstan.net

A short ceramics glossaryEarthenware is flexible to work with, is fired at 900-1,150°C and is only waterproof once it has been glazed.

Stoneware is harder to work with, but is also more hardwearing. It is fired at 1,200-1,350°C and is waterproof without having to be glazed.

Salt-glazed ware is fired in round coal-fired brick kilns. The kiln is filled with sto-neware and bricked up. The pieces are then fired for three days before shovelling in salt, which gives salt-glazed ware its characteris-tic brown glaze. After a couple of weeks, the kiln has cooled enough to break through the entrance and retrieve the finished pieces.

Raku is a technique that originated in Japan. Raku firing is often carried out out-doors, and the hot pieces can then be placed in a bed of wood chippings to extinguish the fire and reduce the amount of oxygen. This is what creates the characteristic crackle-glazed effect.

Veteran cars can also be seen at Thulinträffen in Landskrona, Classic Motor in Båstad and the Sofiero Classic, where charming vehicles try to outshine the stunning surroundings of the grounds of Sofiero Palace. Buzzing nightlifePepe’s Bodega in Båstad is an exotic party palace, pulsating with Brazilian rhythms. At Hotell Skansen’s Sand restaurant, you can sit down on the terrace during the summer with a drink while watching Båstad’s swarming street life, or mingle with party people in the piano bar. Dance lovers should head for one of Sweden’s biggest entertainment centres, Ekebo, near Ängelholm, with its five venues offering dancing, shows, discos and concerts. This is where the Ekebo Festival is held, with 30 or so bands and artists, inclu-ding many dance bands. Wallmans Salonger in Helsingborg offers city-style shows, dining and nightclub-bing, while the nearby Tempel nightclub has a champagne bar and disco. The Tivoli in Helsingborg hosts rock bands, stand-up comedy, a nightclub and various musical events.

Be entertained in style...Magical: Summer concerts from a floating stage in the middle of the enchanting Lake Odensjön - the audience sits on the slopes leading down to the water’s edge, lit with outdoor candles (12-14 August). Unique: Ängelholm, the “Ocarina Town”, is home to the world’s only ocarina orchestra, made up of children aged 5 to 12. On selected days, they play together with the Engelholm Marching Band. Fun: Eva Rydberg’s popular productions with all-star ensembles at the historic Fredriksdal open-air theatre. Comedies and open-air performances are also staged at other locations, including Hem-bygdsparken in Ängelholm and Krapperup Castle. Summer: Barbecuing and live music with a holi-day atmosphere at Borstahusen’s harbourside restau-rant, with dancing on Borstahusen wharf. Traditional: Authentic crayfish party at Helsingborg’s North Harbour. Enjoy this traditio-nal Swedish delicacy, accompanied by high-spirited

singing. And don’t miss our midsummer celebrations, complete with dancing around the maypole. Exotic: Brazilian Week in Båstad, with Latin spirit for party-lovers of all ages. Capoeira dancing, live music, Brazilian football, cocktails and much more, right on the beach.

Sweden’s top golf destinationit may be hard to believe, but Northwest Skåne is home to no fewer than 25 golf fa-cilities and more than 31 courses, all of which are located within 40 minutes of Hel-singborg. This means that we have the world’s second highest concentration of golf courses - only Florida has a higher concentration! And although we may not boast as many hours of sunshine as Florida, Skåne’s mild climate means that you can play all year round at many of our courses.

Page 35: sweden

MWe don’t just offer quantity - we also offer superior qua-lity, with top-ranking cham-pionship courses, restaurants serving culinary delights, and such a wide range of non-

golfing activities that any family members who don’t play golf still have plenty of options. Our golf portal, www.golfno1.se, allows you to plan your golfing trip from home. Here you can find out all about the various courses, with links to their websites for all the latest information. You can also book starting times, golf packages and accommodation online - it couldn’t be easier. To download information to your mobile phone, visit www.m.golfno1.se.

Not only do we have plenty of excellent cour-ses, we also have a wide variety of courses, so-metimes at a single facility. Take for example Båstad Golf Club, where you can play on the short, traditional Old Course or the long, chal-lenging New Course. And if that’s not enough, you can pick and choose between the other courses on the Bjäre Peninsula - here there are a total of 117 holes within 11 minutes of each other: six 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course!

The lush forests of Örkelljunga are home to Woodlands Country Club. This club is quite unique by Scandinavian standards, with its lux-urious lifestyle houses right next to the brand new 9-hole golf course. The 18-hole course also offers fantastic golfing, and the club even has its own Golf Academy where coaches use their test centre to analyse your swing in the minutest of detail.

One of Sweden’s oldest and best-known golf courses is in Mölle, right at the end of the Kulla Peninsula. The real attractions here are the fast greens and the enchanting views. Just a short distance from here is St Arild’s Golf Club,

which regularly features in lists of Sweden’s top golf courses. The delightful club house has a welcoming atmosphere, and the food meets the standards of the finest restaurants.

Vasatorp Golf Club, near Helsingborg, is probably one of Sweden’s best golf facilities. The new tournament course, designed by US cour-se architect Steve Forrest, is unlike any other course in Scandinavia. Here, tournaments can be played up to 6,700 metres. Amateur golfers are also guaranteed a first-class experience on one of the two 18-hole courses and two 9-hole courses, at the excellent training facility and in the renowned restaurant.

Our coastline offers exciting courses and winds that make playing here unlike anywhere else. Landskrona Golf Club boasts two 18-hole courses, with the newly renovated Erikstorp course hosting major championships. You will also find first-rate training facilities here, as well as accommodation right next to the course and a golf museum in the club house. You’ll also get spectacular views of Hven and the Öresund Sound. And speaking of views, Rya Golf Club certainly merits a mention. This is an histo-ric club near Helsingborg, right on the coast. The sixteenth hole is played from an elevated tee offering fine sea views. If you have to wait before taking your swing, sit down and enjoy the incredible scenery. Torekov Golf Club on the Bjäre Peninsula also features sea views from every hole.

The Princess in båstadHenrik Stenson’s The Princess golf com-petition is a new addition to the European Challenge Tour, and is played at Båstad Golf Club during the last week of June. The competition began in June 2009, and will continue for another four years. To find out more, visit www.bgk.se.M
