Love & Prayers, Mrs. Viki

It is beginning to feel a lot like Christmas… The weather that we had in the middle of November was cra-zy even by Texas standards, but it helped to get me in the mood for the Advent season. Christmas tunes have already started playing in my office and car. I am ready to celebrate the season of Christ’s birth. Hopefully the things that we hav-ing going on in our Student Ministry will help you to get ready as well.

A Busy Month We will be really busy in December. Here

are some highlights:

Wednesday December 3rd We will have dinner at 5:45

and then head over and help decorate the church for Christ-mas. This is a fun way that we show we are a part of the Lanes Chapel family each year.

December 4th-6th (Shameless Plug) Macy (my daughter) is

performing in the Pollard Theatre Center’s presentation of A Christmas Carol. It is a musical interpretation that would be fun for the entire family. Grab some tickets and enjoy the show.

Wednesday December 17th Ugly Sweaters and Christmas

Pajamas will the uniform of choice at our last Wednesday night meeting of the year. Come to play some Christmas games and have a Bible study based on our Advent Devo-tionals

Friday December 19th It is Christmas Party time. More

details to come, but mark your calendars. It will be a fun evening celebrating a two-week vacation from school and the coming of our King.

An (Extra)Ordinary Christmas During the season of Ad-

vent each of our students has been given a 25-day devotion-al. Please pray that they stay faithful to the devotions. The devotions will help inform both our Sunday morning and Wednesday evening times together.

Confirmation Congratulations I want to give one more

shout out to the nine students that participated in our confir-mation class this fall. Rachel Audrey Humphrey, Ryan James Humphrey, Elijah Morris Gage, Riley Nicole May, Cheyenne Marie Lawlis, Dakota Fay Lawlis, Peyton Stuart Lamb, Jenna Mae Woodard, and Rachel Elizabeth Labat. It was truly a joy to teach these students. I am proud of the fact they all re-mained faithful throughout the ten weeks.

though, is very disheartening for me. It leaves me feeling very unsettled. So what am I to do? First, I have to remind myself to not de-pend upon “the world” to point to the wonder and beauty of true meaning of Christmas – Jesus Christ, the son of God, came into the world and was born the son of a poor carpenter and his wife. “The world” is going to continue to overlook the importance of giving thanks all while ex-tolling the virtues of more and more stuff. Second, I have to be even more diligent to hang on to the wonder of the manger on my own and recall the two-fold message of the angels who proclaimed the birth of the King. “Glory to God” and “peace to men.” To soothe my unsettled spirit I must remember that I will find peace only through my savior, Jesus Christ. I should not be shocked that the nation has been looking past Thanksgiving for a long time now. I should remember that man will continue to be driven by his sin nature. I should know the only place I can find true peace is through Jesus Christ. So this year I will do my best to move through the season with that message on my heart, “Peace to men.” I pray I can live in that peace and that you can, too.

Glory to God and Peace to Men,

Rev. D. Jeff Gage Senior Pastor

Dear Lanes Chapel Family,

Well… I guess I live in a

land of ideal expectations.

As the years pass, more and more I am sad-dened by the commercialism of Christmas and how it encroaches on Thanksgiving. I have long felt that we as a nation need to spend more time being thankful for what we have before we start asking for more. Although I understand “Black Friday,” I am not a huge fan. I have never understood the fascination of going to a store at 4 in the morning. In my naivete , I assumed all of this started in my lifetime. I assumed that prior to my life that everyone did take the whole Thanksgiving weekend to be thankful and then gear up for Christmas starting soon that next week. Boy – was I ever wrong. Late Wednesday, Thanksgiving Eve, I was watching a program on the history of Thanksgiving when the narrator began to tell about the first Thanksgiving Day pa-rades. The first parade was in 1920 in Philadelphia and was sponsored by Gim-bels Department Stores. The first Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade was soon after in 1924, and was actually called Macy’s Christmas Parade. A Christmas parade on Thanksgiving Day! Both were started in an effort to kick of the Christmas shopping season. AND THIS WAS IN 1924! This con-sumerism reaches almost 100 years ago! BAH! I guess, though… I shouldn’t be surprised. Because of our sinful natures we have al-ways been prone to covetousness, to want more. To see this played out as a nation,

Psalm 100:4 “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.” The church has been blessed with 18 people to join Lanes Chapel in the last couple of months including 9 students to go through confirmation. The Basket Min-istry has been so thankful to participate in these bless-ings. During the holiday season let us know of someone who will benefit from receiving a basket AND remem-ber the Basket Ministry in your end-of-year giving. Forms to complete for a basket are at the Welcome desk in front of sanctuary. If you would like to know more about the Basket Min-istry, Contact Jan McLarty with any questions! 903-312-4733 [email protected]

Luke 6:38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured in your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
