New movie Crazy Heart
was not filmed in Nashville,
but its country music theme
is drawing a lot of local
interest. A premiere held
Tuesday night (1/12) at
the Green Hills movie
theatre attracted members
of the industry and
celebrities alike; all
curious about the flick
which is generating
Oscar buzz for star Jeff
Bridges and the theme
song penned by T Bone
Burnett and Ryan Bingham.
In the movie Bridges plays
hard-living country singer-
songwriter “Bad Blake.” With the
tagline “The Harder The Life, The
Sweeter The Song,” the film follows
Blake’s struggles with drinking, failed
marriages, and a downturned career.
Bridges performs his own songs in the
movie, as does Collin Farrell, who has
drawn less media
attention with his un-
billed role as “Tommy
Sweet,” the superstar
who got his start in
Blake’s band. Maggie
Gyllenhall is “Jean” a
journalist, and Robert
Duvall plays Blake’s bar-
owning friend. Writer-
director Scott Cooper
adapted the story from
Thomas Cobb’s novel by
the same name.
The film’s roots-
grounded soundtrack was
produced by renowned
talents Burnett and Stephen
Bruton, who also contributed
as songwriters and
performers. "The Weary Kind
(Theme From Crazy Heart)," written by
Burnett and Lost Highway’s Bingham, has
already snagged a Golden Globe nod.
Movie stars Bridges, Farrell, and Duvall all

appear on the soundtrack, alongside a mix of legends and
rising stars ranging from Bingham to George Jones,
Waylon Jennings, Buck Owens, Louvin Brothers,
Kitty Wells, Lucinda Williams, Townes Van Zandt,
and Sam Phillips. The soundtrack, out Tuesday, Jan. 19
via New West Records, will be available in two versions—
a standard 16-track issue and a 23-track album featuring
the songs in running order.
A reception at the Country Music Hall of Fame and
Museum rotunda followed the Nashville premiere, where
performances by Bridges, Bingham and Lee Ann
Womack capped the evening. Among the night’s
musicians were Burnett, Buddy Miller, and Bill Frisell.
“We came to Nashville with it because it was a movie
about country music,” enthuses New West’s Amanda
Hale-Ornelas. “Where else to have a performance but
Nashville and the Hall of Fame?”
Fox Searchlight Pictures is releasing the film in select
markets over coming weeks; it hits
Nashville on Friday, Jan. 29.
Bobby Karl Works The Lady Antebellum No. 1 PartyChapter 329 The newly crowned CMA Vocal
Group of the Year had a little
coronation party Wednesday
evening.
Friends, families and fans of
Lady Antebellum gathered at
Cabana (1/13) to salute the stunning
success of the group’s “Need You
Now,” the flagship single of the trio’s
sophomore CD, Need You Now,
which drops Jan. 26.
“We’re here to celebrate a very
special accomplishment by a very
special group,” said Capitol’s Mike
Dungan. “Need You Now” spent
five straight weeks at No. 1, has
had 1.4 million single downloads
and is picking up unsolicited pop
airplay on more than 50 stations.
Just about the whole dang
community turned out for the bash.
You see, the group’s Charles Kelley
and Dave Haywood are BMI
affiliates. Hillary Scott is with SESAC.
And co-writer Josh Kear is an ASCAP
writer. Dave and Charles are with
Warner-Chappell. Hillary is with EMI
Publishing. Josh is signed to Big Yellow
Dog. All six of those entities took to
the stage to hand out prizes, as did
Country Weekly, the CMA and, of
course, Capitol Nashville.
“What a great way to begin the
New Year,” said BMI’s Jody Williams.
“It’s great to have something this
massive come along,” said Warner-
Chappell’s B.J. Hill. “This is greatness
before our eyes, ladies and gentlemen,” added EMI’s
Gary Overton.
BMI handed out silver cups. Big Yellow Dog presented
engraved dog tags. Capitol offered crystal darts. Country
Weekly, Warner-Chappell, the CMA, ASCAP and SESAC all
presented framed plaques of varying sizes.
“One thing that doesn’t need stimulus money are the
framing companies in Nashville,” quipped Steve Moore.
ASCAP’s Connie Bradley pointed out that this is Josh
Kear’s second 5-week number-one song. His earlier one
was “Before He Cheats.” He is also behind the Bomshel
single “19 and Crazy.” Connie congratulated him as well
on his new baby daughter.
Dozens of team members took the stage and many,
many photos were snapped—Paul Worley, Tracy
Gershon, Carla Wallace, John Grady, Kerry O’Neill,
Ben Vaughn, Larry Holden and Tim Fink were among
those in the spotlight.

“This is kind of embarrassing,” said Charles Kelley
about the bounty of Lady Antebellum accolades.
Charles, Dave, Hillary and Josh capped the party by
performing “Need You Now” acoustically. The finale was
Lady Antebellum’s new single “American Honey.”
Hillary’s parents Linda Davis and Lang Scott were
there. So were Mary Ann McCready, Mary Hilliard
Harrington, Autumn House, Clay Bradley, David
Preston, Perry Howard, Hank Adam Locklin, Donna
Hughes, Brad Schmitt, Hunter Kelly, Linda Edell
Howard, Ralph Murphy, Storme Warren, Ed Morris,
Pete Fisher, Tom Roland, Joanna Carter, Daniel
Miller, Stan Barnett, Sarah Trahern, Chris Tompkins
and Steve Hodges.
Something tells me that Lady Antebellum is going to
be in the news a lot in the weeks to come. On Jan. 31, the
group is vying for four Grammy Awards. Hillary has a cut
on the new Blake Shelton CD. Dave and Charles cowrote
the chart-topping “Do I” with Luke Bryan and also have a
Miranda Lambert cut.

DISClaimer by Robert K. Oermann
DISClaimer is on the move. Today is the last Friday
edition of the country review column. Beginning next
week, new country discs will be touted or torched on
Wednesdays. I’ll probably shift bluegrass, Christian, pop/
rock, Americana and other genres to Friday columns.
We’ll see.
As for today, there’s plenty
of star power to be had. Lady
Antebellum is at the top of its
game. David Nail nails the vocal
performance of the week. Josh
Turner has the energy, and
Rascal Flatts has the ballad.
But for overall sonic excellence
the DISC of the Day belongs
to Jack Ingram.
Ken Domash, sometimes
cited as just “Domash,” is our
DISCovery Award winner.

—Stephenson’s 20th Annversary CD celebrates his two
decades in bluegrass. But this track is a country shuffle
complete with steel guitar and twin fiddles. It’s a golden
oldie that was originally a hit for its composer back in
1958. The trio singing on this revival is splendid. Other
guests on the album include Ricky Skaggs, Sonny Osborne,
Dailey & Vincent, Del McCoury and Dale Ann Bradley.
JOSH TURNER/Haywire
Writer: none listed; Producer: none listed; Publisher:

—Chattering guitar, stuttering steel and double-time
beats make this track sizzle. It goes without saying that
his vocal performance is a gem. This is the title tune to
Josh’s CD, which drops on Feb. 9.
Spin Zone by Jon Freeman
Darius Rucker is starting off 2010 the right way:
with a two week No. 1 song. His “History In the Making”
climbed into the top spot in the previous chart, and
furthered its lead with a gain of 117 spins. Toby Keith’s
“Cryin’ For Me (Wayman’s Song)” swoops in from behind
and takes the No. 2 position, just ahead of Miranda
Lambert’s “White Liar” which is also still adding spins.
Jason Aldean’s “The Truth” arrives in the top 5, and the
rest of the top 10 is populated by singles earning big spin
gains like Blake Shelton’s “Hillbilly Bone,” Keith Urban’s
“Til Summer Comes Around,” Brad Paisley’s “American
Saturday Night” and Josh Turner’s “Why Don’t We Just
Dance.”
Less than two weeks from the release date of their
second album, Lady Antebellum has one of the fastest
rising singles out there. “American Honey” made its debut
last week at No. 40, and now it has packed on over 650
more spins to accelerate up to No. 25. Taylor Swift’s
“Fearless” is keeping pace as well—after debuting at No.
41, it has moved up to No. 27 after a gain of nearly 600
spins. Other artists with over 300 spin gains include Carrie
Underwood (“Temporary Home”), Zac Brown Band
(“Highway 20 Ride”), Rascal Flatts (“Unstoppable”),
and Alan Jackson (“It’s Just That Way”).
After a slower first chart of the year, many new tunes
are making a first appearance in Week 2. Songs debuting
include Craig Morgan’s “This Ain’t Nothin’” at No. 58,
Luke Bryan’s “Rain Is A Good Thing” at No. 59, Darryl
Worley’s “Best of Both Worlds” at No. 67, Veronica
Ballestrini’s “Out There Somewhere” at No. 69, Steve
Azar’s “Sunshine” at No. 70, Jackie Arredondo’s “Insane”
at No. 71, Martina McBride’s “Wrong Baby Wrong” at No.
73 and Anna Garrott’s “What A Way To Go” at No. 74.

This week it raked in 3756 spins, up 117
spins from last week. MR reporting
stations have consistently shown their

treated to performances from two shining new talents,

this, so mark your calendars to attend.
Radio Comments“Global freezing is having a break in Minnesota as
phone lines are hot for Miranda Lambert’s ‘White
Liar’ and Darius Rucker’s ‘History In The Making,’
tied for this weeks' most requested,” says Scott
Soderberg of KAUS. “Hot newcomers The Band
Perry with ‘Hip To My Heart’ continue with strong
requests landing them at No. 3."
“The hottest song on our playlist is ‘Tan Lines’ from
Brad Wolf,” says WBYZ's Cole Younger. “Females
are calling for this one and ‘Sunshine’ by Steve Azar.
The guys love ‘Hillbilly Bone’ by Blake Shelton and
Trace Adkins and the phones ring off the hook for
Colt Ford and Jamey Johnson’s ‘Cold Beer.’”
“Josh Turner’s ‘Why Don’t We Just Dance’ is the hot
song this week at WATZ, along with Lady Antebellum’s
‘American Honey,’” says Susie Martin, “but we are also
still getting requests for ‘Need You Now’—so there’s a
double whammy this week! New Music—great tests on
the Bellamy Brothers ‘Heart Of My Heart.’”
“Our hottest new song at KRRV in Alexandria, La. is
Jaron and the Long Road To Love's ‘Pray For You,’”
says Melissa Frost. “If you want to play a song that
will not let your phones stop ringing, this is the song.
We played it during the morning show last week and
got at least five calls in a row asking to play it again.”
Country Twitter Chart The Twitter chart moves slowly
because it takes time to gain thousands
of followers. However, Kenny Chesney
has been on a rampage this week
moving up to the No. 2 position with
almost 360k tweetsters reading his 140 character quips.
Meanwhile Ms. Swift with her legion of over over 2.37
million readers isn't likely to relinquish her top spot on
the list anytime soon. A second male Sony supersar has
also moved into the rankings. The irrepressible Brad
Paisley was not even in last week's Top Ten list, but now
stands proudly in the No. 7 slot. Jewel (67,000) and
Lady Antebellum (66,000) at No. 9 and 10 last week
respectively, have slipped off the chart this week and
been replaced by Reba and Blake Shelton. Shelton's
sense of humor has made him a Twitter favorite, but he
has also created and popularized a unique Twitter syntax
by first repeating the fan's comment, then adding
(via@fan-name) and ending with his response. Check
him out if you haven't already. (The Twitter chart and
artist conversation wall can be found on MusicRow.com

Lady Antebellum"American Honey"Capitol Records Nashville
Hit record trackers look for subtle signs.
But there's nothing subtle about earning
Greatest Spin Gain for two consecutive
weeks. We could posit endless rhymes
about why "American Honey" is one
"sweet" sounding record, but suffice to
say that based on its energetic rise to No. 25 it's likely to "bee"come
"sticky" at the top of the CountryBreakout™ Chart. Last week the trio
gathered an increase of 742 spins to jump from No. 84 to 40. This
week's bounce to No. 25 was accomplished with a 657 spin increase.
Greatest Spin Gain
Craig Morgan"This Ain't Nothin'"BNA Records
With a gain of 269 spins, Craig Morgan's
"This Ain't Nothin'" stormed up the
CountryBreakout™ Chart in its first week,
debuting at No. 58. Last year, the BNA

album, That's Why, and was also inducted
into the membership of the Grand Ole Opry. Morgan will be joining
Carrie Underwood's Play On Tour, which is set to kick off March 11
and includes 45 shows through May 30. Morgan has made more than
150 appearances on the Grand Ole Opry, and plays over 200 sold-out
concerts a year. He spent ten years on active duty in the U.S. Army
before launching his music career, and continues to perform as often
as possible at US military installations both in the US and abroad. Some
of his recent hits include "Bonfire," "Love Remembers," International
Harvester" and "Redneck Yacht Club."

McBride’s “Wrong Baby Wrong” packs on
