Water plays a vital role in achieving sustainable development which is considered one of the major challenges within the Kingdom in light of water resources scarcity, steady population growth and ambitious development plans. Thus, the water sector received a great support and interest from policy makers in the Kingdom over the past development decades; resulting in huge projects in desalination stations, dams, strategic storage facilities, distribution networks and waste water systems, as well as many groundwater and surface water resources assessment and development studies. This support and interest are shown by the regular organization and integration within the water sector by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture with the aim of regulating, controlling and leading the sector towards new horizons and ambitious targets in water resources development and sustainability. Such are under the framework of the National Water Strategy 2030 highlighting the objectives and initiatives of which are guiding this sector. The Kingdom’s efforts in the development of the water sector are in line with international efforts which culminated as the UN General Assembly proclaimed the decade 2018-2028 as the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”.
Thus, the Saudi Water Forum 2019, held under the theme of “Sustainable Water.. for Sustainable Development”, sheds the light on the current efforts and future directions within the water sector according to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 and National Water Strategy. SWF provides a meeting platform for water sector leaders, local and international experts, developers, investors, scientists and researchers, with all concerned stakeholders including the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA), Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC), National Water Company (NWC), Water and Electricity Corporation (WEC) and the Saudi Irrigation Organization, in addition to many other local and international non-water sector partners. The participating parties will exchange their expertise and successful practices with the aim of finding the best solutions for water sector challenges and developing water projects that meet the Kingdom’s needs. Moreover, SWF offers various investment opportunities to develop this vital sector and to encourage the private sector, locally and internationally, to contribute to this development.
