On behalf of The Centre for Career Development, Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Student Advancement) we wish you a very warm welcome to our Transition to Graduate Employment conference for 2015.

Swinburne University of Technology recognises the uniqueness of every student at our institution and values the contribution you have made to build your capabilities to successfully transition from education to employment. To help you prepare fully for this transition we have developed a structured student conference aimed at providing you with a series of opportunities to listen, learn and action your own professional development by connecting directly with future employers.

This program provides you with the underpinning knowledge you will need to successfully navigate the recruitment process. Use your time wisely to make important connections, seek the answers to questions you have about the world of employment and consider the management skills you will need to successfully locate and maintain employment in the future. The Centre for Career Development has selected a range of dynamic and engaging speakers who will challenge your understanding of the labour market and the part you have to play in creating your own career.

The aim of the conference is to enhance your ability to transition smoothly into employment. You will be provided with access to industry representatives from the disciplines within the Faculty of Business and Law combined with opportunities to enhance your general career management skills.

We look forward to closing the conference with a networking function. This is your chance to make new connections that could lead to further career opportunities and enhance your job prospects. This function is not to be missed given that expanding your networks is such a critical success factor in gaining new opportunities.

Mary has a comprehensive background in human resource management, in particular, organisational learning and development. Her roles in senior management have focussed on developing programs, advice and initiatives in work integrated learning, human resource management and career development. Currently, Mary leads and manages the formulation of professional development programs to improve graduate outcomes and to develop engaged self-directed and globally aware learners in the Centre for Career Development at Swinburne University of Technology.

Mary is the National Professional Development Coordinator of the National Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services and sits on the Management Committee. She is a committee member of the State Chapter of the Australian Collaborative Education Network. Mary is also Vice President of the Committee of Management for Melbourne East Disability Advocacy, a not for profit organization dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights and interests of people with intellectual disabilities.

Professor Glen BatesPro Vice-Chancellor (Student Advancement), Swinburne University of Technology

Professor Bates leads the unit responsible for developing existing programs and new initiatives that contribute to supporting, developing and enhancing the academic life and success of our students. The Student Advancement unit aims to achieve this by improving access to University wide and faculty based academic support programs and promoting development and enhancement opportunities for students.

Professor Bates has been with Swinburne since 1989 and has held a number of leadership positions. He was previously Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Life and Social Sciences. Prior to that he was head of Psychological Sciences and Statistics. He has chaired several university committees and has been actively involved in international programs in psychology.

Sreetama BhattacharyaBusiness and System Integration Consultant, Accenture

Sreetama has more than 9 years of experience in Technology (SAP) and business consulting with exposure to multiple Industries. She has managed multiple teams and worked as an SME and has been a consistent top performer at Accenture and previous employers. She has international work experience in US, Singapore, Denmark and India.

She has a Bachelors in Engineering and a MBA in Strategy and Marketing. She is a national (India) scholarship holder in year 10 and 12 and was ranked 37th amongst 0.3 million candidates in 10th. She is very strong in Co-curricular activities, got All-rounder award at school, is the Cultural Secretary of BAV and have volunteered for multiple organisations such as Dress for Success, FareShare Kitchen and FYA. Liam ClarkSwinburne Student Business Society, Swinburne University of Technology

Liam Clarke is on the precipice of a successful career in financial services. He has demonstrated fierce passion for the industry, implementing various trading strategies in his own time and is well on the way to achieving academic excellence studying Aviation Management & Commerce at Swinburne.

While working at Uber, Liam has proven his ability to adapt to the frequent changes of an expanding start-up company. Passionate about aiding and encouraging others, Liam is the President and founder of the Swinburne Student Business Society and previously held the position of Chief Financial Officer on Swinburne’s Business without Borders management team.

Liam enjoys flying and as a private pilot, prides himself on his ability to understand the details and numbers while keeping the big picture in sight.

Jacqueline Custodio is CEO & Co-Founder of Lightsapp, a new recruitment platform that is revolutionising the way freelance contractors and employers engage.

Jacqueline spent 20 years working in the IT sector before switching to the recruitment field. She experienced first-hand the often expensive, unproductive and unpredictable recruitment path for employers and contractors alike. Jacqui responded to this recruitment challenge with the launch of Lightsapp in 2014 and the new open market approach is proving to be a win-win solution for employers and contractors.

When she is not wearing her entrepreneurial business hat, Jacqueline loves spending time with her two young boys or going for a run. It’s Clean Up Australia Day every day for Jacqui and she can regularly be seen picking up rubbish during her seaside runs, revealing her love of nature and commitment to ‘doing her bit’ to help the environment.

Warren Frehse is a career development adviser at the Centre for Career Development at Swinburne University of Technology, and provides careers support to the Faculty of Business & Law.

He holds an honours degree in behavioural sciences, and has held HR development roles in finance, transport, media, and has provided career transition and change consulting to leading ASX and multinational companies.

He is the author of “Manage Your Own Career: Reinvent Your Job; Reinvent Yourself”’ and is a registered professional practitioner with the Career Industry Council of Australia.

Charisse EdeMarketing Manager, Villa Maria Catholic Homes

Charisse Ede is a communications and marketing specialist with more than 20 years’ experience as a journalist, communications adviser and marketing manager. From her early years as a cadet, to chasing world news in England, on air reports for ABC Radio and breaking stories for Australia’s national news wire, she has gathered a broad range of experience across a number of mediums.Charisse now applies her media and management skills to assist the development and promotion of organisations through strategic marketing and communications strategies, including aged care and disability service provider Villa Maria Catholic Homes, where she is Marketing Manager.

Moumita Ghosh is a digital marketing consultant with Accenture. She studied and worked in India prior to moving to Australia last year. She is passionate about working with clients to understand what their customers want and how to engage with them through meaningful dialogue.

When she is not working, she spends her time exploring Melbourne, learning to cook different cuisines, and catching up with friends.

Xenia HaysomActing Director, Professional Placements, Swinburne University of Technology

Xenia Haysom heads up the Professional Placements team at Swinburne University of Technology and oversees the delivery of professional placement programs for students, namely Swinburne’s Industry-Based Learning program and internship programs. She has over 10 years experience working in the higher education sector in student recruitment, international education, collaboration and partnerships and work integrated learning.

She is a strong advocate for students making the most of the opportunities available to them at Swinburne, having studied abroad twice and undertaken a work placement as part of her studies at university.

Diana is the Global Mobility Coordinator at the Swinburne Abroad Office. Her work involves helping send Swinburne students out on exchange and short term programs overseas. Prior to this she worked in international recruitment for Swinburne International, helping students from the Americas and Europe to come to study at Swinburne.

Diana studied a Bachelor of International Affairs in Caracas, Venezuela (where she is originally from) and then went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of International Business at Swinburne. Whilst studying Diana undertook various international opportunities overseas both as a part of her studies and for work experience. These have been driving forces in her life and have benefited her greatly her career today in International Education.

Professor Michael GildingExecutive Dean, Faculty of Business and Law, Swinburne University of Technology

Professor Michael Gilding is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at Swinburne University of Technology. He is an economic sociologist who specialises in innovation, networks and clusters, family business, inheritance, and the social dimensions of economic behaviour.

He is the author of three books and more than 30 journal articles, and has been a Chief Investigator on 7 ARC Discovery and Linkage projects, including partnerships with AusBiotech, Pitcher Partners and Vic Police. Michael was the President of The Australian Sociological Association 2007-2010.

Rowan KimberLawyer / Operations Manager, Parke Lawyers

Rowan Kimber is the Operations Manager at Parke Lawyers; in addition to his management role he is one of the firm’s lawyers practicing in the business law team. Prior to being called to the law Rowan spent over a decade in the aviation industry holding various flight crew and management positions, including five years as chief pilot and general manager for Bluewater Aviation, a large general aviation charter and aerial work company in North Queensland. Rowan holds a Bachelor of Laws with Honours and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice with Merit.

Alex Makin AFAMI CPMManaging Director, Syneka Marketing, Victorian Advisory Committee Chair, Australian Marketing Institute

Alex is the Principal Founder and Managing Director of Syneka Marketing. Alex has worked in senior marketing roles for over fifteen years. During this time Alex has transformed, grown and reinvigorated many businesses and not-for-profit organisations, by developing marketing plans and strategies that deliver tangible marketing outcomes. Alex founded Syneka marketing in 2009, while serving as an elected Councillor, and Mayor at Maroondah City Council. Syneka Marketing has created award winning marketing plans and strategies, receiving recognition in the 2013 and 2014 Awards for Marketing Excellence. Alex is the current Chair of the Australian Marketing Institute’s Victorian Advisory Committee, as well as a Certified Practising Marketer and Associate Fellow.

Anthony Matis FCPAGeneral Manager for Business Development, Education (International), CPA Australia

Anthony holds a Bachelor of Business in Accounting and is also a member of CPA Australia. Anthony’s experience is diverse having commenced his career in Corporate Services and Audit before transitioning into commerce in various senior finance roles in industries such as fashion, health, public relations and advertising to name a few. Anthony was CEO of Macquarie University’s member based student services for a period of three years. He then spent the next twelve months contracting to large business around change management initiatives before being appointed as the CEO of the Australian Newsagents’ Federation. This role saw Anthony extensively involved with Publisher Contracts, the sale of NSW State Lotteries as well as heading up an initiative that gave rise to an ACCC outcome which was an Australian retail first.

Mischel Luong Client Success Associate, Zomato

Mischel graduated from the University of Melbourne with an honours degree in Psychology. She has since gained employment as a research assistant at Melbourne Uni and worked as an associate at various social market research agencies. Parallel to her academic endeavours, Mischel has worked in hospitality for almost a decade from fast food chains to finer dining establishments. As a result, she has always held a strong academic interest in group dynamics and human behaviour and passion for hospitality. It was at the big meet that she was approached by a “Zoman.” After a gruelling interview process, Mischel joined Zomato has a Business Development Associate. Since, she has been able to apply her education and skills set to this very challenging role while also acquiring hands on business experience. Within her first few months she was promoted to a Client Success Team Member and now manages over 40 accounts.

Adhira RazdanSenior Accountant, Business Recovery and Insolvency, BDO

Adhira started her career at BDO in 2010 as a cadet after finishing high school. She simultaneously worked at BDO and studied during her degree and finished in March this year.

She is now a Senior Accountant in the Business Recovery and Insolvency area at BDO and commenced her CA studies in June 2015.

Nick draws upon a decade of international professional services experience across a range of industries, with particular strengths in the financial services sector. His strong technical abilities allow him to define the needs of the client and ensure these are closely linked to their strategic vision; all the while considering and understanding the economic environment that they operate in.

His capabilities include strategy development and execution, process improvement, change management, project accounting, financial modelling and finance/business analysis.

William MeeveSenior Associate, Levant Consulting

William is an Management Consultant and co-owner of Levant Consulting. His focus is on helping organisations enhance their performance, effectiveness and profitability through the integration of human capital issues with business strategy. Elizabeth Maginn is the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) Assistant Manager at the Law Institute of Victoria. Her role in the YLS allows her to provide support to law students and young lawyers alike as they commence their legal careers.

Gillian SkwarekRecruitment Consultant, Dixon Appointments

Gillian’s background includes large scale graduate recruitment campaigns for some of Victoria’s largest organisations. She has developed graduate employment training and has facilitated workshops and assessment centres to assist graduates launch their careers. Gillian possesses a unique understanding of the Melbourne employment market with her current role where she is responsible for placing hundreds of candidates into professional roles each year.

I am a Campus Recruitment Consultant at EY recruiting specifically for the Audit, Fraud Investigation and Dispute Services, and Climate Change and Sustainability Services practices of the Assurance Division. I have been with EY for over 2 and half years in the HR team having experience in both employee advice and administration as well as campus recruitment. My role in the Campus Recruitment team sees me coordinate and manage recruitment for the aforementioned areas, facilitate information sessions and workshops and manage and coordinate student programs.

Rod ThomsonDirector, Swinburne Student Amenities Association (SSAA)

Rod is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (FCA) and a graduate of Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). He has extensive business experience working in commercial and not for profit organisations across a range of industries and sectors.

Seton Walsh-Rose LLB, B.comGM Talent & Business Services, The Allied Group

Seton has completed both a Law and Commerce degree and is also undertaking a Masters in Human Resource Management. She has what some might call a very unique perspective on the employment and labour market, having worked across various industries and sectors including corporate services, government, education, health and not-for-profit. After tenures in accounting, business management and HR related roles, Seton joined the Allied Group, driven by her passion for helping people.
