ONE DAY IN GSTAADA PERFECT WINTER DAY
SnowshoeingAfter a hearty breakfast at the hotel put on your snow gear and take the gondola up to Mount Eggli. Material for snow shoeing can be hired at our sports shop Silver Sport. The route begins south of the Eggli Mountain Hut, parallel to the winter hiking trail. It will lead you through open fields with majestic views of the mountain peaks, especially Mount Gummfluh and Rübli. Follow the signs towards “Vorderes Eggli” from where you will get back to the gondola station.
Taste some local foodOne of the best things about a location like Gstaad is the possibility to enjoy locally sourced and authentic food. Jump on the train to Château-d’Œx for lunch at Le Chalet. Here you can try and savour products labelled “Pays-d’Enhaut Produits Autentiques”, which is a seal of quality for food items exclusively produced in our region. Taste anything from dairy cow, goat or sheep products, meats, honey or syrup. We promise you will not be disappointed!
Dive into the world of chocolateSwitzerland is famous for its chocolate. Hence a visit to the Maison de Cailler in Broc should not be missed. Learn all about how chocolate is produced and where it comes from. If you fancy getting creative yourself, book one of the choco-late making workshops.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friendOnce back from your eventful day pam-per yourself to one of our spa treatments by Gemology. Products by Gemology are based on precious gem stones, perfect to get ready for a glamourous evening out in Gstaad.
Sommets Musicaux experienceIf you are in Gstaad between January 27th and February 4th make sure to take advantage of the classic music concerts of the Sommets Musicaux. One particular highlight is dinner with the main acts after some of the concerts. For more in-formation contact our reservations or concierge team.
One for the roadNot ready for bed yet? Our Lobby Bar is always worth a stop. No matter if you prefer relaxing by the open fire or getting engaged in some conversations by the bar, our team is pleased to find the right drink (or two) for you. For those not staying with us at the Palace, our concierge is happy to call you a taxi. Good night!

THE HISTORY OF SWISS SKIING
HE ORIGINSThe origins of skiing come from snowshoeing and can be traced back to pre-historic
times. Snowshoes were used first by Mongolian tribes in Central Asia. Before coming to Europe this means of moving over snow first moved to North America via Lapland, Scandinavia and Greenland, as well as all the way down to Australia. Only from 1870 onwards skiing was first discovered and slowly established as a sport. Konrad Wild from the Canton of Glarus in Switzerland first experi-mented with what we now know as skis today. This all happened in secret though according to the local history recordings.
THE OFFICIAL ESTABLISHMENT OF SKIINGThen in 1882 Christoph Islin, again from the Canton of Glarus, received a Hickory ski from Norway and started developing the sport together with two Norwegians. Finally in 1893 he launched a ski tour from Glarus over the Pragel Mountain Pass to Schwyz. This route together with a selection of instructions on how to ski was the official start to skiing as a sport in Switzerland, and soon after the first ski club of Switzerland was founded in Glarus.
GSTAAD IS AN INNOVATIVE TREND SETTERGstaad saw its first ski winter season in 1907 /08 and in fact the first funicular of Switzerland was built and put in practice here, namely at Mount Wispile in 1935. This happened only two years
after the establishment of the first certi-fied Swiss Ski School of Gstaad, and in 1938 already the second then called “Funi” was built at Mount Eggli. Firmly believing in the lucrative future of winter sports, Gstaad again built the first chair lift of Switzerland in 1945 to further develop the offering of skiing. But it wasn’t only for these techni-cal advances tourists and visitors were drawn to the region during the winter. Popular sport events such as winter horse races, ice hockey matches and the 1928 Swiss ski race assured a current flow of guests to Gstaad. In 1926 the tourist board of Gstaad even employed a so called “sports manager” whose task it was to make sure that there was “some-thing going on” in Gstaad every day. Almost 100 years later the Saanenland is still one of the top winter destinations in Switzerland, offering a large variety of activities and events for all ages.

he origins of the hammam ritual go back into the 15th century. It is a blend of a roman bath with ottoman customs. The meaning
of hammam is “dispensing heat”. With time the public hammam developed into more than a place of cleansing. It be-came a sort of social centre or meeting point, where also communal and some religious ceremonies were held. As private bathrooms became common in residential households the importance of the hammam decreased. However, in many cultures it is still today a regular ritual for relaxation and cleansing. Here at Gstaad Palace we took the most soothing elements of this ritual to create our very own Hammam expe-rience. In more than two hours you can relax in five different stages, combining steam baths, a gentle cleansing ritual based on black olive soap and a comfort-ing aroma therapy massage. The experience can be enjoyed as a couple or alone and has become our most popular signature treatment within our spa.

NEW WEBSITE
staad Palace is lovingly referred to as one of Switzer-land’s Grande Dames; and like all great ladies, she wants to
change and freshen up her look from time to time. Speaking to our loyal guests and long standing colleagues, being “a symbol of tradition but still young at heart”, is what Gstaad Palace signifies to most of them. Fond childhood memories, fun nights out and grand
hotel glamour is at the core of this symbolism. All our 300 team members and relent-less renovations, with our new Deluxe Suites and Salle Baccarat being the latest, are the two all-important pillars to keep the great aura of our Palace alive. Expressing this mood of “moving with time but keeping our soul“ in pictures and only a few words was at the heart of our rebranding project. New images, colours and the use of illustra-
tions were introduced to create the foundation for it all. Phase one was the production of our new Highlights, flyers and other print material. Phase two will see our new website go online this winter season, which will bring together all the latest news and information surrounding Gstaad Palace, and it is also where you will be able to book your stay at our best price in just a few clicks. We hope you like it!

FORTE VILLAGE AT GILDOʼS
or the first time this winter our legendary Italian restaurant Gildo’s will host Chef Alessandro Cocco and his team from the well-known Forte Village Resort in Sardinia.
Cocco and his team will prepare dishes that reflect fresh Mediterranean flavours with influences from different Italian regions. One can rest assured that they will satisfy the desire for diversity but also the authenticity that Gildo’s Ristorante is known for.
Cocco discovered his passion for cooking at a very young age when he started preparing meals for himself after school. Born and bred in Sardinia, his vita not only in-cludes professional experience in Italy, but also distant places like Antigua and Switzerland. His menu at the Palace will contain a great variety of hearty, yet sophisti-cated dishes, embracing elements that will take your taste buds away from our winter wonderland and trans-port them into a lush Italian summer garden.
Buon appetito!
GENERATION CHANGECHEF PETER WYSS HANDS OVER TO FRANZ FAEH
fter more than 40 years our Executive Head Chef Peter Wyss hands over the reigns to Franz Faeh. Throughout the winter season Wyss, together with his right-hand man Hugo Weibel,
will say goodbye to guests and friends during various culinary evenings at the hotel. For non-residents, he is still available for chalet caterings in and around Gstaad. Franz Faeh and his Sous Chef Luca Gatti have been leading the kitchen team since October 1st, 2016 after having worked at the Palace for many years. They will serve up in usual Palace style and standard in all our restaurants. The Palace family says a big thank you to Peter Wyss and Hugo Weibel, and also extends a warm wel-come to Franz Faeh and Luca Gatti.
