W elcome to the sixth year of Swn Festival in Cardiff, where, once again,
we are delighted to be back with another stellar lineup of new and
wonderful musical talent. We hope that you enjoy the weekend whether you’re
here for all of it or just some of it. there’s a load of incredible artists playing
on the bill, with an emphasis on the new and emerging from across Wales
and beyond.
you’ll fi nd all you need to know on all of the artists performing at swn between
October 18-21 right here in this free programme, as well as the times and location of
each performance.
if you’re familiar with the festival, or
even Cardiff, then you’ll know that a
lot of the venues are a short ride apart,
most are walkable and all can be
found on the map inside. This year we
return to the Reardon smith Theatre,
National museum Cardiff for the John
grant gig; we’re very pleased to be
back at such a beautiful venue.
Also making a return is The Welsh
music prize. Back for it’s second year,
the ceremony is helping kick-off swn’s
sixth birthday when it takes place on
Thursday 18, our opening night. There
is also a special concert at the Coal
Exchange on the eve of the festival
featuring performances from eight
of the 12 nominees. good luck to
everyone nominated for the prize.
Thanks to all the venues, promoters
and volunteers involved: without you,
swn simply couldn’t happen. Also,
a big thanks to you for coming: your
support makes swn festival what it is.
mae swn nol! yng nghanol Caerdydd! Ni’n hynod o
falch gallu dweud bod ni yn ein chweched blwddyn nawr,
a unwaith eto mae llwyth o gerddoriaeth newydd gwych ar

eu chyfer i gyd neu dim ond rhan ohonni. mae gymaint o
fandiau da o bob rhan o gymru a thu hwnt mlaen eleni.
mae’r manylion ar bwy sydd mlaen rhwng Hydref 18-21
yn y llyfryn hwn, yn ogystal a’r amseroedd a lleoliadau holl
bwysig. Os chi’n gyfarwydd a Caerdydd, fyddwch ci’n nabod
y rhan fwyaf o leoliadau, ond ma rhai dipyn yn bellach na’i
gilydd. Ni’n falch iawn o fod nol yn Theatr Reardon smith
eleni; mae’n leoliad arbennig iawn.
mae seremoni gwobr gerddoriaeth gymreig yn digwydd
ar nos iau Hydref 18; llongyfarchiadau mawr i’r artistiaid
enwebedig i gyd!

S w ˆn Festival began in 2007, co-founded by Huw Stephens and John Rostron following an
inspiring trip to the world famous, multi-venue arts festival SXSW (South by Southwest)
in Austin, texas. Among the 100 acts performing during that chilly, first three-day weekend in
November were the then-unknown Yeasayer and Beirut.
flick through the festival scrapbook and you’ll fi nd notable performances over the years from the likes
of The vaccines, Los Campesinos!, The drums, marina & the diamonds, Lucy Rose, islet and y Niwl,
to name but a few. float past
the performance of mercury
prize nominee Ben Howard
last year, as well as the
inaugural Welsh music prize
ceremony, and you’ll fi nd
yourself in the current day;
the biggest swn festival yet,
with over 200 acts billed and
a record number of festival-
goers expected.
Embracing everything from
folk to hip-hop to electronic,
grime and, for want of a better
word, ‘indie’, swn festival
has become a staple event
on the musical calendar with
an always-growing music
and fringe schedule.
Now fi rmly fi xed in
October, and once again
stretching across four days
after last year’s successful
addition of a packed sunday,
swn festival 2012 will be
one to remember.
gwyl swn yw’r digwyddiad blynyddol sy’n cael ei drefnu gan
hyrwyddwyr swn, sydd wedi ei leoli yng Nghaerdydd. Ers y dechrau mae
swn wedi bod yn cefnogi cerddoriaeth newydd o gymru, ac yn falch o
ddod a bandiau o du allan i’r wlad, mewn iddi. unwaith eto, yn ymestyn
dros pedwar diwrnod ar ôl llwyddiant llyned, mi fydd gwyl swn 2012 yn
un i gofi o. diolch am ddod, ac am fod yn rhan o’r profi ad.
ganwyd yr wyl yn 2007 dan ofal John Rostron a Huw stephens, yn
dilyn taith ir wyl aml-leoliad, byd enwog, south by southwest yn Texas.
ymhlith y 100 o berfformwyr yn ystod y tridiau oer yna dros penwythnos
cyntaf gwyl swn nôl ym mis Tachwedd, roedd y bandiau anhysbys ar y
pryd, yeaysayer a Beirut.
Edrychwch trwy lyfr sgrap yr wyl a chewch weld perfformiadau gan
fandiau fel The vaccines, Los Campesinos!, The drums, marina & the
diamonds, Lucy Rose, islet a y Niwl, i enwi ond ychydig. Chwaraeodd
Ben Howard llynedd, ac fe gynhaliwyd seremoni gwobr gerddoriaeth
gymreig am y tro cyntaf erioed. Hon ydi’r gwyl swn mwyaf hyd yma,
gyda dros 200 o berfformwyr â’r nifer mwyaf o fynychwyr i’r wyl erioed.
yn croesawu popeth o gerddoriaeth werin i grime, electronig i indie,
mae gwyl swn bellach yn ddigwyddiad penodol ar y calendr cerddoriaeth
gydag amserlen cerddoriaeth sy’n tyfu trwy’r amser.
unwaith eto, yn ymestyn dros pedwar diwrnod ar ôl llwyddiant
llynedd, mi fydd gwyl swn 2012 yn un i gofi o. diolch am ddod, ac am

“Seeing Summer
Camp and Benjamin
Francis Leftwich
perform for the BBC
Radio Wales sessions
at Kuku Club was
breathtaking. It
was so intimate and
world’s away from
any other gig. I loved
that.”
Jemma, Swn Festival 2011
“My favourite Swn
Festival memory
would have to be
having the privilege
to DJ during the
Silent Disco. It was
fantastic getting
around 1,000 people
to sing (badly) in
unison while trying
to show Steve
Lamacq how it was
done as he spun the
other decks. That
was a great night.”
Paul, Swn festival 2009
“I was there when
Yeasayer played
during Sunday
afternoon in Buffalo.
Me and my friends
didn’t know who
they were, but got
a tip-off to watch
them so we did. It
was packed, and
understandably so.
Thanks to whoever
told us to stay, as
I’ve been hooked
to Yeasayer ever
since!”
Hannah, Swn Festival 2007
“One of my
favourite-ever
gigs was Truckers
of Husk at Swn
Festival 2008. It
was in a small,
cramped venue with
a makeshift stage
in one corner and I
ended up standing
on two sofas to get
a good view. They
were really bloody
loud, sounding
incredible. Oh, and
there was lots of
dancing.”
Keith, Swn Festival 2008
S ix years down the line, we like to think that
Swn Festival has given you some memories
that you’ll never forget. So, to coincide with the

H ello, I’m zoë; this year ’s volunteers co-
ordinator for Swn Festival. I started off as a
volunteer in 2010 where I quickly learnt that it’s a
great experience and something that I simply can’t
recommend enough. You really get out what you put
in and are rewarded by working with some amazing
people, being able to see great bands and get a
behind-the-scenes insight of this brilliant festival.
For me, the best part is being around a bunch of
people who love what they do. Sure it can be hard
work, but it’s also so much fun - every year. Being
part of our team is great for your CV and you’ll
make some strong contacts for the future.
i’ve made some amazing friends, collected
unforgettable memories and fallen in love with
new music.
Zoë Philpott Swn volunteers Coordinator
VOLUNTEERS
“I love the fact that
being part of the
volunteers team
last year felt more
like being part of
a huge family. I
made so many good
friends and listened
to some amazing
music. Being a Swn
volunteer is one of
the best things I’ve
done.”
Zoë vernon,
volunteer 2011
"Volunteering last
year gave me a great
taste of Cardiff's
alive and thriving
music scene.
Everyone involved
with Swn is great
fun to work with
and I've got some
great memories from
it all."
