PREFACE Pope St. John Paul II taught about how to pray the Rosary in his apostolic

exhortation, Rosarium Virginis Mariae. In particular, he recommended the scriptural

Rosary:

Listening to the word of God

In order to supply a Biblical foundation and greater depth to our

meditation, it is helpful to follow the announcement of the mystery with

the proclamation of a related Biblical passage, long or short, depending

on the circumstances. No other words can ever match the efficacy of the

inspired word. As we listen, we are certain that this is the word of God,

spoken for today and spoken “for me”.

If received in this way, the word of God can become part of the Rosary's

methodology of repetition without giving rise to the ennui derived from

the simple recollection of something already well known. It is not a

matter of recalling information but of allowing God to speak. (#30)

Pope Benedict XVI echoed this emphasis on the value of Sacred Scripture for praying the

Rosary during his visit to Pompeii, Bl. Bartolo Longo’s shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary:

If Christian contemplation cannot leave the Word of God out of

consideration, if it is to be a contemplative prayer, the Rosary must

always emerge from the silence of the heart as a response to the Word,

after the model of Mary's prayer. Seen clearly, the Rosary is completely

interwoven with scriptural elements. First of all there is the enunciation

of the mystery, preferably made, as it has been today, with words taken

from the Bible.

Accordingly, this booklet features short passages from Sacred Scripture for each decade of

the Rosary. Each column organizes a set by drawing from a book of the Bible or by a theme

which guided the choice of passages for each mystery. May Our Lady of the Rosary, the

Eternal Queen of Heaven, smile upon our efforts to enrich our prayer of her Rosary with

listening to Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit, her mystical spouse.

Pilate . . . said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I . . . have not found this man guilty of the charges . . . “He will be handed over to the Gentiles and he will be mocked and insulted and spat upon; and after they have scourged him they will kill him, but on the third day he will rise." -Luke 18:32-33

Third Sorrowful Mystery:The Crowning with ThornsCourage

With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed. The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted. So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished. -Luke 23:22-25

And Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but rather a tumult was made; taking water washed his hands before the people, saying: "I am innocent of the blood of this just man; look you to it." -St. Matthew 27:24

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery:The Carrying of the CrossPatience

As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus. A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him. -Lk 23:26-27

"For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; for he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall save it. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, and cast himself away." -St. Luke 9:24-25

And when he had said these things, while they looked on, he was raised up: and a cloud received him out of their sight. -Acts 1: 9

Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit Love

"If you, with all your sins, know how to give your children good things, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." -Lk 11:13

And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles, and in the communication of the breaking of bread, and in prayers. -Acts 2: 42

Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of our Blessed Mother into HeavenFinal Perseverance

Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy. For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be. -Lk 12:33-34

"My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed." -St. Luke 1:46-48

They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. -Mt 2:10-11


[Simeon said,]"Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace. For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the peoples to see: A revealing light to the Gentiles, the glory of your people Israel." And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. -Lk 2:30-33

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." -St. Mark 1:9-11

"I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." -Mt. 3:11


So he came again to Galilee, where he had made the water wine. -Jn 4:46

He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one'? So, they are no longer two but one." -Mt 19:4-6a


Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." -Mark 1:14-15

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." . . . And he went about all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom. -Mt 4:17,23


After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain apart by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no fuller on earth could bleach them. -Mk 9:2-3

But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and do not be afraid.” And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone. -Mt 17:7-8


Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. -Jn 6:54-55

Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Where will you have us prepare for you to eat the Passover?" -Mt 26:17

So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas; and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. -Mk 15:15

And they brought him bound, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor. . . . . And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, saying: "Art thou the king of the Jews?" Jesus saith to him: "Thou sayest it." -St. Matthew 27: 2; 11


And they clothed him with a purple cloak, and plaiting a crown of thorns they put it on him. And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck his head with a reed, and they spat upon him, and they knelt down in homage to him. -Mk 15:17-19

Then the soldiers of the governor taking Jesus into the hall, gathered together unto him the whole band. And stripping him, they put a scarlet cloak about him. And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand. -St. Matthew 27:27-29


And they led him out to crucify him. And they compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyre'ne, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Gol'gotha (which means the place of a skull). –Mk 22:20b-22

And after they had mocked him, they took off the cloak from him, and put on his own garments, and led him away to crucify him. -St. Matthew 27: 31


The centurion who stood guard over Him, on seeing the manner of His death, declared, "Clearly this Man was the Son of God!" —Mk 15:39

Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" -Mt. 27:45-46

“Unless your justice abounds more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.’ (Mt. 5:20)

The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your womb, you shall fear evil no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: "Do not fear, O Zion" -Zeph. 3:15


There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but he came to bear witness to the light. -St. John 1:6-8

"If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." -Jn 15:9-11


And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. And from his fullness we have all received.. -St. John 1:14,16

He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. He came into his own home and his own people received him not. -St. John 1:10-11

“He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me; and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." –Jn 14:21


But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not blood, nor of the will of the flesh, not of the will of man, but of God. -St. John 1:12-13

"It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.'" -Jn 6:45 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working still, and I am working." This was why the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath, but also called God his Father, making himself equal with God. -Jn 4:17-18

John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend as a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' and I have seen and bore witness that this is the Son of God." -Jn 1:32-34


When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." –Jn 2:2-5

Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast." –Jn 2:6-8

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came though Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known. -St. John 1:17-18

Jesus grew deeply troubled. He went on to give this testimony: "I tell you solemnly, one of you will betray Me." -St. John 13:21

Again he asked them, "Whom do you seek?" And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus answered, "I told you that I am he, so if you seek me, let these men go." This was to fulfill the word which he had spoken, "Of those whom thou gavest me I lost not one." -Jn 18:7-9


[Pilate] told them, "I find no crime in him. But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover; will you have me release for the King of the Jews?" They cried out again, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. -Jn 18:39-40

Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged. –St. John 19:1


And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak, and they came to him and said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck him repeatedly. –St. John 19:2-3

So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!" When the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" -Jn 19:5-6a


They cried out, "Away with him, away with him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar." Then he handed him over to be crucified. -Jn 18:15-16

So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called the place of a skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha. -St. John 19:17


Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. -St. John 19:25

When Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing near, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" -St. John 19:26-27a

Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. -St. John 20:8-9

On the evening of that first day of the week . . . Jesus came and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." -St. John 20:19


"And if I shall go, and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you also may be."—St. Jn 14:3

And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." –Luke 1:35


He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it You shall love your neighbor as yourself. –Matthew 22:37-39

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. –Hebrews 13:1-2


Now there were shepherds in that region living in the fields and keeping the night watch over their flock. The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear. The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.”-Luke 2:8-10

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest; and on earth peace to men of good will." -St. Luke 2:13-14


The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. . . . He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. —Ps 23:1

She gave thanks to God and talked about the Child to all who looked forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem. -Lk. 2:38


Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. -Ps. 23:6

And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all theses things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature, and in favor with God and man. -St. Luke 2:50-52

And John bore witness, "I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him; but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'" -St. John 1:32-33


Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them up to the brim. -St. John 2:6-7

Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. And when he does find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy and, upon his arrival home, he calls together his friends and neighbors and says to them, 'Rejoice with me because I have found my lost sheep.' -St. Luke 15:4-6

And if your eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into fiery Gehenna. See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father. –St. Matthew 18:9-10


This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have power to lay it down, and power to take it up again. This command I have received from my Father."-St. John 10:17-18

After withdrawing about a stone's throw from them and kneeling, he prayed, saying, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me; still, not my will but yours be done." And to strengthen him an angel from heaven appeared to him. -Luke 23:41-43


I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. –John 10:11

Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its sheath, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think that I cannot call upon my Father and he will not provide me at this moment with more than twelve legions of angels? But then how would the scriptures be fulfilled which say that it must come to pass in this way?" -Matthew 26:52-54


So I became the shepherd of the flock to be slaughtered for the sheep merchants. –Zechariah 11:7

But we do see Jesus "crowned with glory and honor" because he suffered death, he who "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. –Hebrews 2:9


He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you had gone astray like sheep, but you have now returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

"For he that shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him the Son of man shall be ashamed, when he shall come in his majesty, and that of his Father, and of the holy angels." -St. Luke 9: 26


Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is my associate, says the LORD of hosts. Strike the shepherd that the sheep may be dispersed, and I will turn my hand against the little ones. –Zechariah 13:7

Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. -Hebrews 2:16-18

I will appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble; and none shall be missing, says the LORD. -Jer. 23:4Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel, thou who leadest Joseph like a flock! Thou who art enthroned upon the cherubim, shine forth before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh! Stir up thy might, and come to save us! While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, "Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven." -Acts 1:10-11


As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I will lead them out from among the peoples and gather them from the foreign lands; I will bring them back to their own country. -Ezekiel 34:12-13

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being changed into his likeness from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from Lord who is the Spirit. -2 Cor. 3:17-18


"She gave birth to a Son — a boy destined to shepherd all the nations with an iron rod. Her child was caught up to God and to His throne." —Rv 12:5

The Son of Man . . . will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. -St. Matthew 24:31


"For this reason they stand before God's throne and worship him day and night in his temple. The one who sits on the throne will shelter them. They will not hunger or thirst anymore, nor will the sun or any heat strike them. "I, Jesus, sent my angel to give you this testimony for the churches. I am the root and offspring of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and the bride say, "Come." Let the hearer say, "Come." On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood up and exclaimed, "Let anyone who thirsts come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as scripture says: 'Rivers of living water will flow from within him.'" (Jn 7:37-38).

Now thanks be to God, who always maketh us to triumph in Christ Jesus, and manifesteth the odour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are the good odour of Christ unto God, in them that are saved, and in them that perish. -2Cor 2:14-15

Strive for peace with everyone, and for that holiness without which no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God. -Hebrews 12:14-15a


Beloved, let us love one another; for love is of God, and he who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love, does not know God; for God is love. -1 John 4:7-9

Now since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. -Hebrews 2:14-15


By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. -1 John 3:16

For this reason, when he came into the world, he said: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; holocausts and sin offerings you took no delight in. Then I said, 'As is written of me in the scroll, Behold, I come to do your will, O God.'" -Hebrews 10:5-7

And this is the confidence which we have in him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have obtained the requests made of him. -1 John 5:14-15

Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and adulterers. -Hebrews 13:4

"This is the covenant I will establish with them after those days, says the Lord: 'I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them upon their minds,'" he also says: "Their sins and their evildoing I will remember no more." -Hebrews 10:16-17


Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 1 Jn 3:2

For to what angel did God ever say, "Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee." Or again, "I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son." -Hebrews 1:5


If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. -1 Jn. 1:7

Brothers, . . . through the blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his flesh. -Hebrews 10:19-20

Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. -Hebrews 12:3-4


Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. -1 John 2:22

Yet at present we do not see "all things subject to him," but we do see Jesus "crowned with glory and honor" because he suffered death, he who "for a little while" was made "lower than the angels," that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. -Hebrews 2:8c-9


By this we may be sure that we are in him; he who says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. -1 John 2:5

Let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us and persevere in running the race that lies before us while keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the leader and perfecter of faith. For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. -Hebrews 12:1b-2


In this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the expiation for our sins. -1 John 4:10

Therefore, Jesus also suffered outside the gate, to consecrate the people by his own blood. Let us then go to him outside the camp, bearing the reproach that he bore. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the one that is to come. -Hebrews 13:12-14

The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and sober for prayers. Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins.
