In 2013, TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute (TAFE SWSi) reaffirmed its status as an award-winning provider of vocational education and training, with regional, national and international accolades going to our students and staff.

TAFE SWSi was named the Large Training Provider of Year at the 2013 Australian and NSW Training Awards, confirming our place among the nation’s best providers. These awards acknowledge our ability to provide quality training and highlight our strengths as an organisation.

During 2013, TAFE SWSi increased our higher education offerings and commenced delivery of the TAFE NSW Higher Education Associate Degree of Accounting. TAFE SWSi worked closely with the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia) to form an agreement to deliver the Bachelor of Applied Management (Design) in 2014, and signed a new partnership with the University of Canberra to deliver the Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT).

TAFE SWSi also continued to make a contribution to the community by meeting the needs of individuals, industry and local organisations. Our commitment to the delivery of hundreds of customised courses helped to build workforce capability and develop stronger communities.

In 2013, this included the development of a new initiative called the Trade Readiness program which is aimed at boosting apprenticeship completions. Other highlights included building stronger partnerships with councils, NSW Police, the NSW Department of Family and Community Services and other social and commercial enterprises.

I would like to thank all TAFE SWSi staff, our students and our industry and community partners for their contribution to a very productive and successful year.

“TAFE SWSi is able to deliver flexible training programs which meet our needs and that of the students seeking to learn. We always obtain fantastic results for the students and the training partnership continues to build our capacity as an organisation so that we can serve our community well.”

The ‘Young People in Lakemba’

project included an audit of local

community services and religious

organisations by a TAFE SWSi

student who worked closely with

staff from the City of Canterbury

to identify their capacity for

providing services to young

people. This was followed by

consultations with young people

and local service providers. The

outcomes of the project included

the development of a youth

services directory. In addition, the

project fostered communication

between organisations beneficial

for developing future partnerships

to respond to the needs of young

people in the community.

The programs include:

y ‘Young People in Lakemba’

– which aimed to identify

local services that could

provide support to young

people through the provision

of structured activities

and pathways to training

and employment

y ‘Eat Well and Tell’– which

aimed to promote healthy

eating among local residents

y ‘Skilled Migrants and

Employment’– which aimed to

boost employment outcomes

for skilled migrants living

in the City of Canterbury.

TAfE sWsi and city of canterbury work together

TAFE SWSi signed an MOU

with the City of Canterbury in

2013 with the aim of working

together to help to improve

the lives of local residents.

Under the new MOU, three

priority programs were rolled

out to help the most vulnerable

in the City of Canterbury.

place jobseekers in childcare employment by creating entry level pathways to employment.

The project was designed to support the development of sustainable skills and employment pathways within the local childcare industry, and help meet community needs within the Campbelltown/Macarthur local area.

‘Eat Well and Tell’ resulted in the

training of 15 local community

members to deliver healthy

eating talks and demonstrations

to other community members

across the City of Canterbury.

Nine participants graduated from

the ‘Eat Well and Tell’ course,

which consisted of an eight week

training program. On completion

participants received units of

competency in food preparation

and received support in finding

employment and volunteer

opportunities to utilise their skills.

TAfE sWsi introduces ‘Trade Readiness’ program

In 2013, TAFE SWSi led the way

with a new initiative designed

to boost apprenticeship

completions by assessing people’s

suitability to undertake an

apprenticeship before they start.

The five day ‘Trade Readiness’

program was designed to give

senior school students and those

who have left school a chance to

demonstrate that they have the

skills and competences needed

to excel in an apprenticeship.

The program consists of four days of intensive hands-on training and assessment, with a fifth day involving literacy and numeracy screening, exit interviews, career advice and counselling. The program was initially trialled on young people interested in an apprenticeship in carpentry, plumbing and various automotive trade areas.

‘Trade Readiness’ focuses on skills including initiative, attitude, trade literacy and numeracy, hands skills and coordination.

Pre-employment program assists children’s services students

TAFE SWSi delivered pre-employment training to 15 children’s services students at Campbelltown College. While studying their Certificate III in Children’s Services, each of the students completed a two week work placement.
