SECTION 1: GETTING STARTED

SECTION 1

Getting Started: Unpacking Your SystemFor most installations, Supercircuits video systems come with everything needed to install and operate your video surveillance system. If your system uses multiple power supplies, you may also need multi-outlet power strips.

1.1 Unpacking the equipment

Remove the equipment from its packaging and place it on a flat, clean surface. Inspect each item. If any visible damage is present, contact your supplier or Supercircuits for a replacement.

Verify that your order is complete. Within your order you should find:

• The number of cameras you ordered. Each camera includes mounting screws and a power adapter (unless you ordered a single universal power supply for your system)

• Monitor with the associated video and power cables• DVR with power cables• A 100’ BNC video/power cable for each camera• Any other accessories ordered

SECTION 2

Equipment Testing Due to the sensitivity of electronic devices and the potential for damage during shipment, it is important to bench test each component of the system before installation. Equipment testing is performed in two stages:

• Camera testing by attaching it directly to a monitor• Camera with DVR testing by attaching the camera to the DVR and observing the performance at the

monitor

2.1 Camera testing with the monitor

1. At a test station, unpack the monitor and attach the base. Remove the screw on the underside of the base and use it to attach the base to the monitor support bracket.

2. On the back of the monitor, pull out and up to remove the cover to access additional connections on the left side.

3. Select any camera in your system and a BNC to BNC cable.

4. Attach the camera drop cable to the BNC to BNC cable. To attach the BNC connector, push the cable BNC connector onto the camera’s BNC connector and twist the outer barrel until it locks into place.

NOTE The BNC to BNC cables are fitted at one end for the camera power connector and at the other end for the camera power adapter.

5. At the other end of the 100' cable, attach the BNC connector to the BNC “Video In” connector on the monitor, and attach the camera’s power adapter to the cable’s power connector.

6. Power-on the monitor.

7. Power-on the camera by plugging the power adapter into an electrical outlet.

8. On the monitor right side panel, press the “SOURCE” button, and then press the up (“”) or down (“”) arrow buttons until “BNC” is highlighted on the INPUTSOURCE pop-up window. Press the MENU button on the right side panel. You should see a clear video image from the camera on the monitor.

9. Power-off the monitor.

10. Unplug the camera’s power adapter from its power source.

11. Repeat this test using every camera, cable, and power adapter you will use to install your system.

2.2 Camera and DVR testing

1. Unpack the DVR.

2. Use the VGA cable provided with the monitor to connect the VGA port on the back of the DVR to the VGA port on the underside of the monitor.

3. On the back of the DVR, set the “VGA/CVBS” switch to VGA.

4. Attach the power adapter to the DVR and plug it into a power source to power it on.

5. Power-on the monitor. On the monitor right side panel, press the “SOURCE” button, and then press the up (“”) or down (“”) arrow buttons until “PC” is highlighted on the INPUTSOURCE pop-up window. Press the MENU button on the right side panel.

6. Verify that a display from the DVR appears on the monitor

7. Plug all of the cameras into the DVR using the BNC cables you will install with your system.

8. Plug the camera power adapters into a power source to power the cameras on.

9. Use the DVR front panel controls to select each camera individually. Verify that the monitor displays a clear image from each camera.

10. Press the front panel “SEQ” button and verify that the DVR auto-sequences through all cameras.

11. Press the front panel “ENTER” button repeatedly and verify that the DVR cycles through the display modes available for your system.

Installation Tips3.1 Camera placement

Use the information included in the packaging of your camera to mount and connect the unit to power and video cables. Plan your camera installation carefully. Identify the locations where cameras will provide the best coverage, considering:

• Field of view – Cameras must be positioned so they can effectively view the entire area that must be monitored.

• Lighting – Is there enough light in the field for the camera to “see” clearly? Is there intense light from the sun or shiny objects that reflects onto the camera lens? These conditions may affect the video quality and camera performance.

• Ease of installation – Must be able to install the camera at the location, considering mounting hardware requirements, temperature, dust, moisture, etc.

3.2 Weatherproof cameras

Weatherproof cameras can be mounted in any open area, such as on a telephone pole or on the side of a building. However, for best results, we recommend you mount your cameras in a sheltered area, such as under the eave or roof of a building. Point the camera in the direction you wish to observe. When routing cable near the camera, allow enough slack to form a “U” shaped drop to help direct moisture that accumulates on the cable to flow away from the camera.

NOTEThere are no user serviceable parts inside these cameras. Opening the camera housing will break the weatherproofing seal, allowing moisture and condensation to build up inside the camera housing and on the lens.

NOTE Connections are not weatherproof.

3.3 Cable runs

Video/power cables can be run almost anywhere, and are frequently routed above drop/acoustic ceilings because of the ease of installation. For added security, we recommend you run your cables in areas with limited access to prevent tampering. Avoid running the cable near high voltage appliances such as fluorescent lighting. Electrical noise and magnetic fields produced by these devices may affect video signal quality.

A 100' BNC video/power cable is shipped with every camera in your system. Custom-cut cables are also available from Supercircuits.

3.4 DVR/recorder placement

Your recording equipment is central to the accurate capture of video evidence and constant surveillance. Supercircuits strongly suggests that it be installed in a secure location with access limited to authorized personnel. Additionally, DVRs and recording equipment generate heat and should be placed in a well ventilated area. Excessive heat will reduce the life span and reliability of the equipment.

The monitor does NOT need to be on for recording to take place. DVRs will output and record video regardless of the operational status of the monitor.

3.5 Uninterruptible power supplies

It is strongly suggested that power to the system be routed through an uninterruptible power supply (UPS). These devices will keep your security system running through most power outages, in addition to providing excellent surge and sag protection. The UPS should support your video recorder and all cameras to ensure operation during power outages.

A Chances are you’ve run the cable backwards. Only one end of the camera cables supplied by Supercircuits will fit the camera, while only the other end will fit the power adapter. The cable will need to be pulled, and run the other direction. Alternatively, the end power portion of the cable can be cut, and reversed by splicing the cut plugs into their proper position. However doing so will void any warranty on the cables and the cameras, particularly if the plugs are attached incorrectly (such as reverse polarity) and the cameras are destroyed as a result.

A Smoothness of the recorded video is dependent upon several factors including compression level, capture size, and the maximum frame rate of your DVR. Most DVRs record at a maximum frame rate of 30, 90, or 120 frames per second (fps). The frame rate of your DVR is divided between each channel being recorded. For example, a 90 fps DVR recording 4 channels will record 22.5 fps per channel, which will appear fairly smooth. By contrast, a 120 fps DVR recording 9 channels will record 13 fps, which will not appear smooth and fluid, particularly when compared to a normal TV broadcast at 30 fps. If there are irregular gaps in the video, or a momentary loss of video, there could be problems in the system. Call Supercircuits at 1-800-335-9777 for assistance.

A This is usually a symptom of low voltage at the camera. You may have a cable run that is too long, a defective cable, or an insufficient power supply. Try using a better quality cable, or plug the power adapter directly into the camera to bypass the cable all together.
