The Salient Inspiration

Syamaprasad College founded by Dr Syamaprasad Mukherjee came into existence in the city

immediately after the end of World War II in 1945 It was then styled as Asutosh College of

Commerce (evening section) This Evening Section was delinked from Asutosh College and acquired

the status of a full-fledged independent college in 1958 with a separate Principal and separate

management under instruction from University Grants Commission and with the approval amp

affiliation of University of Calcutta Calcutta University resolved to perpetuate the memory of Dr

Mukherjee by renaming the college founded by him as ldquoSYAMAPRASAD COLLEGErdquo The

Syamaprasad College has since its inception as an independent college in

1958 focussed on upholding the mission and vision of empowering every

individual with Knowledge and Confidence The institution gives due

importance to academic excellence as well as to vibrant co‐ curricular

activities In the recent past the college has developed its infrastructure

students Besides a number of our faculty are vested with power and

communication network and has a seating capacity of 20 readers

Sports facilities are made available to all students under the programme Games

ANTI RAGGING

Right from its beginning Syamaprasad college has been carrying a

healthy reputation to maintain good academic environment which is

totally free from all types of ragging However keeping the view with the

inside the College premises or any other part of city as well as on public

transport and anyone found guilty of ragging andor abetting ragging

liable to be punished in accordance with the UGC regulations on curbing

the menace of ragging in Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) 2009 as

well as under the provisions of any penal law for the time being in force

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention

Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 (MINISTRY OF LAW AND JUSTICE)

An Act to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at work

place and for the prevention and redressal of complaints of sexualplace and for the prevention and redressal of complaints of sexual

harassment and for matters connected there with incidental thereto

WHEREAS sexual harassment results in violation of the fundamental rights

of a woman to equality under articles 14 and 15 of the Constitution of

India and her right to life and to live with dignity under article 21 of theIndia and her right to life and to live with dignity under article 21 of the

Constitution and right to practice any profession or to carry on any

occupation trade or business which includes a right to a safe environment

free from sexual harassment

AND WHEREAS the protection against sexual harassment and the

right to work with dignity are universally recognized human rights by

international conventions and instruments such as Convention and the

Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women which has been

ratified on the 25th June 1993 by the Government of India

AND WHEREAS it is expedient to make provisions for giving effect to the

said Convention for protection of women against sexual harassment at

workplaceworkplace

The college has already set up an internal complaints committee

headed by Dr Tilottoma Mukherjee against sexual harassment of any

form This committee meets regularly to take note of cases of sexual

market One of the many distinctive features of Syamaprasad

College is the Department of French This is the only college under

the University of Calcutta which offers French as Honours andy

General subject and the only one of the two colleges in West

Bengal to have a French Honours Course What makes this course

more remarkable is the fact that a student with no prior

knowledge of French can enrol and learn the language fromknowledge of French can enrol and learn the language from

scratch as the University offers a student friendly curriculum The

college is equipped with a smart classroom which enables teachers

to provide learners with the facility of listening and viewing clips in

an honours student in French heshe will be able to communicate

fluently in the language write creatively and know about French

literature and culture including French cuisine media and cinema

French anywhere in India and in any Indian University The college

also offers a certificate course in French for an additional fee to

students from any stream for a total duration of 36 hours

The Salient Inspiration

Syamaprasad College founded by Dr Syamaprasad Mukherjee came into existence in the city

immediately after the end of World War II in 1945 It was then styled as Asutosh College of

Commerce (evening section) This Evening Section was delinked from Asutosh College and acquired

the status of a full-fledged independent college in 1958 with a separate Principal and separate

management under instruction from University Grants Commission and with the approval amp
