A word on AIPPI

About AIPPIThe International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI) is the world’s leading inter-national organisation dedicated to the development and improvement of intellectual property globally for the past 120 years.

AIPPI is a non-affi liated, non-profi t organisation headquartered in Switzerland and boasts more than 9,000 members representing over 100 countries globally. The members of AIPPI include lawyers, attorneys, and agents, working across all fi elds of intellectual property in corporate and private practice throughout the world, as well as academics, judges, government offi cials and other persons interested in intellectual prop-erty. AIPPI is organized into 68 National and Regional Groups.

AIPPI’s ObjectivesAIPPI strives to improve and promote the protection of intellectual property at both national and interna-tional levels. It does this by studying and comparing existing and proposed laws and policies relating to intellectual property, and working with both government and non-government organisations for the devel-opment, expansion and improvement of international and regional treaties and agreements, and national laws.

AIPPI operates by conducting studies of existing national laws and policies, and proposes measures to promote best practices and achieve international harmonisation of law, policy and practice. In this context, AIPPI has become increasingly involved with defi ning well balanced systems for protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights.

Congress Programme

AIPPI Congresses take place every year. Congresses are open only to AIPPI members. For Sydney, we are expecting over 1,500 participants to attend. After Sydney, forthcoming Congress venues include Cancun (2018), Istanbul (2019), Hangzhou (2020), San Francisco (2021) and London (2022).

As noted above, at AIPPI meetings, Study Committees engage in discussions to achieve a consensus on Res-olutions representing the positions of AIPPI. However, a large majority of attendees are there for the excellent networking opportunities and for the educational programme of AIPPI, which typically features a day of panel sessions on international IP issues relating to pharmaceuticals and two days of international panel sessions on contemporary IP law issues.

In addition, there are special panels of experts discussing current and future developments, mock trials, meet-ings of corporate representatives from industry, a women in AIPPI reception and a fi rst time attendees reception.

Welcome to Sydney, AustraliaOn behalf of the Australian Group of AIPPI and AIPPI International, we are excited to invite you to the AIPPI Congress in Sydney in 2017.

The 2017 Congress will be held in the new International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney which will be com-pleted December 2016. ICC Sydney will be one of the world’s newest convention, exhibition and en-tertainment precinct, providing Congress attendees with state of the art facilities and comforts.

The Australian IP community is very active and we are excited to meet and engage with our colleagues from around the world. Sydney is an outward look-ing city, a centre of regional and international trade, and will provide a fi tting venue to enable inspiration and interaction.

City of SydneySydney itself is the largest city in Australia and is located directly on the spectacular Sydney Harbour. Many of the Congress events will be located on and around the Harbour.

AIPPI attendees will be able to travel by ferry to many of the scenic attractions of Sydney, including Manly Beach, Luna Park and the famous Taronga Zoo. The beaches of Sydney are easily reached for those who wish to catch a wave, as are many other exciting attractions including world class golf courses, coast-al walks, restaurants and bars, the Blue Mountains and the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The Congress is scheduled to be held in Oc-tober, when the weather will be ideal for outdoor activities and entertainment. A comprehensive pro-gram of tours is being assembled for pre and post Congress, while during the Congress the venues and events will provide breathtaking memories.

Sydney is also the commercial capital of Australia, with the Australian and Regional head offi ces of many of the world’s leading companies located here. Sydney dominates the Australian corporate scene in the IT and pharmaceutical industries and hosts in-ternationally renowned research and academic insti-tutes. The Sydney Courts are also the venue of choice for much of the IP litigation that occurs in Australia.

Sydney and Australia are safe, affordable and wel-coming. We have a diverse and tolerant multicultural population that will make all AIPPI attendees, from whatever background, feel at home.

General InformationCurrency: Decimal currency is used in Australia with the dollar as the basic unit (100 cents = $1) Notes come in $100, $50, $20, $10, and $5. Coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 denomina-tions. Currency exchange facilities are available in most banks, hotels and airports and operate normal business hours. Credit cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops, the most widely used being Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club.

Goods and Services Tax (GST): All prices quot-ed on this website are inclusive of 10% GST (Goods & Services Tax), unless otherwise specifi ed. GST ap-plies to most goods and services in Australia.

Tourist refund scheme (TRS): This is administered by the Australian Customs Department and enables trav-ellers departing Australia to claim a refund of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Wine Equalisa-tion Tax (WET) paid on goods bought in Australia. For detailed information on the TRS visit the website of the Australian Customs and Border Protection Ser-vices of the Australian Government at http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4646.asp.

Language: The offi cial and most widely spoken language in Australia is English, and is also the offi -cial language for the Congress.

Population: Australia has a population of about 24 million people, of which 4.9 million live in Sydney.

Climate: September to November is Spring in Syd-ney with daytime temperatures ranging from 18-25 ºC (50-68 ºF). Generally Australians are informal dressers. We suggest you bring a jacket and tie with you for special occasions. A light jacket is recom-mended for evenings.

Eating Out: Bistros, restaurants, cafes and coffee shops offer varied menus, prices and decor. Sydney has many excellent restaurants, as well as many in-formal options. Many of these are close to the con-ference venue. Sydney’s multicultural traditions are refl ected in the wide variety of cuisines, and in the excellent local wines on offer.

Electricity: Electrical current is 240/250V, AC 50Hz. The Australian three-pin power outlet is differ-ent from that in many countries, so you will need an adaptor. If your appliances are 110V, check if there is a 110/240V switch. If not, you will need a voltage converter. Universal outlets for 240V or 110V shavers are usually found in leading hotels.

VISA: All visitors to Australia must have a valid visa to travel to and enter Australia. For VISA information please refer to the Passport and Immigration (VISA) section of the AIPPI 2017 Sydney website. http://aippi2017.org/general-information/

Quarantine: Australia is free from many plant and animal diseases prevalent in other countries. Very strict quarantine rules apply to the import of animals and plants, which cannot be brought into the country without prior application. Animal and plant products are also restricted.

For more information see the ‘Information for Inter-national Travelers’ on the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) website, which you can access by visiting the ‘Passports and Travel’ section of http://www.australia.gov.au/’

Vaccination: There is no vaccination required for entering Australia. However, if you enter Australia from a yellow fever declared country but do not hold a vaccination certifi cate you will receive a Yellow Fe-ver Action Card for further information. More infor-mation can be found on the Department of Heath of the Australian Government at http://www.health.gov.au/yellowfever.

Planning your travel: Due to the time change and jet lag, the Organising Committee suggests you consider arriving in Australia a number of days pri-or to the Congress opening. This will enable you to relax and familiarise yourself with your hotel and its surrounds before the start of the Congress.

Shopping: Sydney Shops open from 09:00 to 17:00 during the week with late night shopping on Thursday. On Saturdays and Sundays most shops are open from 09:00 to 19:00.

Tipping: Tipping is not as widespread or regulat-ed in Australia as it is in other parts of the world. Tipping is your prerogative, a reward for service. It is customary to tip hotel porters and a gratuity of about 10% is usual in restaurants if good service is received. Tips for taxis are regarded as optional.

True North Cruise – The Whale Sharks of Cenderawasih Bay 10 Days/9 Nights

Darwin/West Papua/Darwin 4 Days/3 Nights

Snorkel and dive perhaps the richest waters of all!

Enjoy a night in Darwin before boarding a chartered air-craft for the short fl ight to Sorong. West Papua’s coastal areas encompass more than 275,000 km² of land and sea including the Cenderawasih Bay Marine Park - the largest marine park in Indonesia and, setting for one of the most unique animal encounters on the planet! Visit remote and exquisite coral atolls and highly picturesque islands seldom visited by tourists. The Auri Islands offer the most beautiful clear-water snorkelling and diving in Cenderawasih Bay, as well as some of the most beautiful (and uninhabited!) white sand beaches in West Papua.

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is the biggest fi sh in the sea and can grow to more than 12 metres in length. There are several places in the world where snorkelers can seek out a close encounter with these gentle giants - how-ever we are pretty sure that nothing compares to a whale shark encounter in Cenderawasih Bay! Most encounters with whale sharks are fl eeting – but not in Cenderawasih Bay – here whale sharks linger close to the surface for extended periods and the reason for this unusual behav-iour is not diffi cult to appreciate – they have long become accustomed to taking advantage of small fi sh that spill from the nets of local fi shermen. Even the most inexperienced snorkeler will enjoy this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience!
