Milestone – First slab on groundOn Wednesday, 5 August 2020, the foundations of the new Sydney Football Stadium were laid with the pouring of the first concrete building slab.

NSW Origin Coach Brad Fittler, former Wallabies star Phil Waugh and Socceroos Head Coach Graham Arnold were on hand to perform a ceremonial footy boot imprint into the concrete and opened a time capsule full of mementos from 1988.

Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said the project is investing in local companies during COVID-19 and will continue to utilise as many local suppliers and subcontractors as possible through to completion.

To complete the stadium, a further 40,000m³ of concrete will be poured which is the equivalent of 16 Olympic swimming pools.

Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment | September 2020

Hours of operationThe project continues to utilise the extended working hours under the Environmental Planning and Assessment (Covid-19 Development – Construction Work Days) Order 2020.

Current working hours are:

— Monday to Friday: 7am – 6pm

— Saturday: 7am – 6pm

— Sunday: 8am – 3pm

Public Art PlanA range of public art and heritage interpretation initiatives are to be integrated into the stadium and surrounding public domain, including reinstating existing public artworks where practicable.

Cultural Capital, a Sydney based public arts advisor, have been awarded the contract to deliver the public art plan for the Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment. More details will be provided later in 2020.

Deep dive – plat manufacture commencesThis week the first of the precast plats was produced. A plat is a seating tier that holds the seats for the stadium. The plats will span between structural steel raking beams and the seats will be attached to the vertical face of each plat.

They are cast out of project specific steel moulds using a specialised concrete mix to achieve high early strength and a good quality finish.

There is a total of 870 plats being installed in the new stadium, using 400-tonne crawler cranes which will be set up on the pitch. Their weights vary from 2 tonnes to a maximum of 23 tonnes, and their lengths range from 1.5 metres to over 14 metres.
