Learning the textile (dyeing and weaving) of Japan through measurements of textile properties, dyeing practice and investigative tours.

Diverse cultural influences have been weaved into Japanese art and design culture,

You can not feel the true fabric of Art and Design unless you actually experience it using your five senses. In this seminar, students will visit places where the essence of traditi
onal Japanese art and design can been seen and felt. Student's understanding of the lectures will be deepened by, for example, wearing a kimono or sitting on a tatami floor in a
traditional Japanese tea house in an atmosphere of simple beauty while feeling the season, tasting Japanese tea and admiring the Japanese art on the walls.Students will experi
ence the traditional Japanese life style(clothing, food and living)by engaging in various types of fieldwork.

What is fashion? How does it work? This course seeks to understand the role of clothing and fashion in our personal lives and in society at large. It will examine the psycholog
y of why we wear clothing and how we choose it and judge it; how it affects economies and politics, and how it is linked to greater art movements and aesthetics.
Some ideas that will be emphasized include gender, sexuality, identity politics, cosmetics, cool and camp, Bohemia, dandyism, fashions role in modernity, fashion photograph

This course will survey fashion and media culture theory in Japan, through key benchmarks, the magazine and new media (including web media, promotional media, social me
dia, independent press, and free papers), and street fashion, while also covering and reporting on topics from the theoretical field of media studies and the creative works.
The course is divided into four parts.1) In the first of the term, we will explore the history of Japanese fashion magazines and new media, and Japanese street fashion.2) In the
second term, you will pick up over 10 magazines or new media materials, and give a presentation about research on differences each one of these.3) In the third term, we will i
ntroduce the theory of “Kogengaku: Modernology”, the study of fashion trend and modern social phenomena. Also we study “Teiten Kansoku(fixed point observation)” wh
ich is one of methodologies of street fashion and cultural studies in Japan since 1980. We would like to invite you to participate in a trial interview of “Teiten Kansoku” in No
vember.4) In the last term, you will produce your own media/new media.

In order to learn about professions, trades and businesses, students are required to complete an internship at a designer brand company, an apparel maker, a design studio, a te
xtile manufacturer, or other related business. The period and duration of the internship will be determined according to the conditions and needs of each company. Students
will periodically report to a faculty member the nature of their training and the progress they have made during their internship.

Japanese (Basic) lessons, designed for beginners, cover basic Japanese grammar and sentence patterns, as well as vocabulary and expressions necessary in real life
situations. The lessons focus on not only oral practice, but also listening, reading, and writing. Writing exercises in hiragana (Japanese alphabet), katakana (Japanese
alphabet) and kanji (Chinese Characters) are also presented.
Since the course forcuses on oral production, pre-class preparation using the grammar textbook and review are required for the lessons.
*Student with a high Japanese proficiency will not be allowed to take the course.

Handling numbers, quantities and prices.
Describing everyday life and the possessions.
Understanding descriptions of the location of things.
Understanding basic sentences describing familiar activities from

Understanding and describing simple phrases about places.
Talking about your likes and interests and asking others about theirs.
Explaining that you have received something from someone or given
something to someone.
Comparing and discussing what to choose, where to go, what to do, etc.
Talking about what you did or how you felt using a past form.

Describing hopes and plans and offering to do something for
someone.
Understanding how to make and use the dictionary form of verbs.
Describing yourself and expressing your abilities using the dictionary f
