Flat deck trailers, tools and generators were among the stolen items turned up by a police search of a house in Leslieville last week.
Sylvan Lake RCMP car-ried out a search warrant on Feb. 25 with help from Rocky Mountain House RCMP and a regional Priority Crimes Task Force, one day after a break and enter at a house in Eckville led them to the Leslieville address.
Police say evidence gathered from the Eckville incident pointed them in the direction of the Leslieville property, where they executed the search warrant around 4 p.m. Feb. 25.
A stolen snow blower and a loaded rifle were also found during the search, as were several items from the previous day’s break and enter in Eckville. The flat deck trailers were found to have previously been stolen from Fort Saskatchewan.
Police took a 21-year-old Leslieville woman into custody following the search, and a 34-year old Leslieville man had made
arrangements to turn him-self in at press time.
Police said last Friday that the pair would be charged with break and enter, possession of stolen property and weapons offences. Names weren’t released, as neither suspect had yet been formally
charged.Sgt. Jeff McBeth of the
Sylvan Lake RCMP said the arrests were the result of regional collaboration among the Priority Crimes Task Force’s participating detachments, which include Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Innisfail and Blackfalds, while Lacombe Police Service also offers support.
“We know that crimi-nals cross jurisdictions all the time, and that’s why collaboration and shared intelligence among task force members and neigh-bouring police detach-ments is so important,” said McBeth in a statement last Friday. “As these arrests and the recovery of so much stolen property dem-onstrate, sharing informa-tion and working together allows RCMP in the region to better target those indi-viduals who are criminally active in all our policing areas.”
Police are now aiming to identify the rightful owners of the tools recovered in last week’s search. Victims of recent tool thefts are asked to contact Cst. Mike Lee at the Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment by call-ing 403-858-7200.

Kerry Towle will represent the Progressive Conservative Party in Innisfail-Sylvan Lake in the next provincial elec-tion after winning a party nomination vote in Penhold on Saturday.
Towle received more votes than Red Deer County mayor Jim Wood, the only other candidate vying for the nod.
She felt the win was satisfying after what she said has been “a tough few months,” but is now concentrating solely on getting back to work.
“I’m looking forward to ... focusing on the issues facing our riding, and to making sure that urgent care, transpor-tation issues, and our seniors and schools are getting addressed and have that strong voice at the table,” she said. “It’s been a tough few months, there’s no question about it,
but we needed to go through this process. I’m really look-ing forward to getting back to working hard for the riding.”
Towle said she was highly impressed with the level of engagement shown for both teams in the nomination, with more than 1,000 votes having been tallied in total. And she had plenty of positive things to say about runner-up Wood.
“Jim Wood did a fantastic job and he ran a fantastic campaign,” she said. “I applaud him for that, and I’m look-ing forward to working with him and his team.”
She’s also grateful to voters who took part in the nomi-
nation process, and for their feedback — both positive and negative.
“I felt very strongly supported in our riding, and I’m thankful for that, but I certainly would never take a voter for granted, and I know we’ve still got lots of work to do,” she said.
Towle’s nomination success comes after she received a number of high-profile endorsements, including one from Premier Jim Prentice who, during a recent visit to Sylvan Lake, referred to Towle as “one of the best, most effective MLAs in the province.”

Towle takes PC nomination in Innisfail-Sylvan Lake
Thanks to a birthday gift from my son, my list of excuses for not exercising has been shortened so severely it’s hardly even worth having a list.
He got me one of those Fitbits.
A Fitbit tracks your steps and has the amazing ability to track a whole lot of other stuff about you.
It can track the calories you eat, the calories you burn, your sleep, your heart rate and how many times you smile during the day.
Actually, it doesn’t track your number of smiles, but I’m sure that’s coming.
Of course, the trick is to figure out how to set it up, otherwise the thing is use-less and will sit forever in its box, a wealth of untapped possibilities.
Mine had actually set in its box for several days. I kept moving it to a different spot on the kitchen counter, picking it up, turning it over, looking at it thought-fully and then putting it back with a sigh of defeat.
I had no idea how to set it up, and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to.
It wasn’t that I didn’t know about the Fitbit and what it could do.
My son had also got his
sister one for her birthday, and she immediately began to sing its praises.
“That Fitbit is amazing,” she told me, a few weeks later. “I’m in better shape than I ever was.”
I look at her over my skinny latte. A skinny latte is what I drink when I’m with my kids because that’s what they always order. I always just say, “same,” to the person behind the counter, although I’m never too sure what a skinny latte really is.
It’s just that ordering black coffee seems so ridic-ulously old fashioned when I’m with my adult children. Ordering a skinny latte seems younger somehow!
Anyway, my husband, who was oblivious to the fact that I was not sure the Fitbit and I belonged together, asked me if I want-ed to sync it with my iPad or my iPhone.
“Neither,” I muttered under my breath.
But of course he ignored me. Selective hearing!
And before I knew it, it was all set up, the little grey bracelet attached to my
wrist and I was good to go.My daughter and her
family came for supper last night and I proudly showed them my wrist.
“You’re wearing it, Mom,” said my daughter. “Good for you! How many steps have you done so far?”
“Seventeen,” I said with brutal honesty.
Her drink almost spurt-ed out of her nose as she burst into a helpless gale of
laughter.Actually, much to my
surprise, by the end of the night I had bumped up those steps considerably. After all, I never left the kitchen, except to get the broom and dustpan from the hall closet.
But now my Fitbit and I are into day two of a cozy little relationship.
It’s tracking me as I sit in front of the computer tak-
ing absolutely no steps whatsoever.
Zero steps!But that is about to
change. I am almost fin-ished this column and I can go for a walk.
A long walk!Oh dear, I was afraid this

Dear Editor,As you know, our govern-
ment is working hard to keep our streets and communities safe across Canada. We con-tinue to take concrete steps to strengthen the public’s confidence in the criminal justice system and to provide better tools to help protect Canadian families through strong and needed reforms.
Recently our government announced that we are mov-ing forward with much-needed legislation to better protect Canadians from seri-ous repeat violent criminals — serious criminals who are released into communities across the country after serv-ing only two-thirds of their sentence under the current system of “Statutory Release.”
We have all heard stories of criminals who go on to reoffend, sometimes vio-lently. There are too many criminals who commit seri-ous offences while on
Statutory Release. Canadians cannot accept this.
This is why we will soon introduce legislation to ensure that repeat violent criminals will no longer be automatically granted statu-tory release after serving two-thirds of their sentence. We will propose amendments to the Corrections and Conditional Release Act to seriously restrict statutory release for repeat federal criminals who have previ-ously received a prison sen-tence of five years or more that includes a serious violent offence. Our goal is to see that the most serious crimi-nals are kept off our streets and away from Canadian families for as long as pos-sible.
These changes comple-ment other tough-on-crime actions that our government has introduced, such as:• Tougher prison sentences for sexual offences against
Government must continue to help protect law-abiding citizenschildren, serious gun crimes, impaired driving and selling drugs to children;• Providing the courts with the discretion to end sentence discounts for multiple mur-ders; and,• Repealing the Faint Hope Clause, which allowed offend-ers serving a life sentence with a parole ineligibility
period of more than 15 years to apply for parole after serv-ing 15 years in prison.
I am proud of our govern-ment’s strong action to keep our streets and communities safe while ensuring that the rights of victims are placed over those of criminals. We make no apologies for our tough-on-crime stance
because we know that law-abiding citizens look to their government to help protect them from violent individu-als, from dangerous criminals and terrorist threats. This is what our government has done and what we will con-tinue to do.

his supporters for their valiant efforts in the recent PC nomination campaign.
Your consistent respect for democratic principles stands in stark contrast to the equally consistent efforts by Jim Prentice to destroy them. And in spite of Prentice and two other cabinet ministers parading around the riding with your opponent while ignoring you in a blatant attempt to influ-
ence the local PC membership, you neither fell to complaining or self-pity and pressed on against all odds.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man and woman who robbed a bar at gunpoint in Eckville Feb. 22.
Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to the armed robbery complaint at the Eckville Hotel Bar just after 4:30 p.m. The two sus-pects fled the scene prior to the police’s arrival.
The suspects robbed the bar while the
bar’s occupants were held at gunpoint. No shots were fired in the incident, and no injuries were reported.
The first suspect is described as a cau-casian male between 25 and 35 years old. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a blue T-shirt with a ‘DC’ logo on the front, dark sweat pants and a black bala-clava. He’s said to be about six feet tall.
The second suspect is described as a female of about five feet seven inches tall with brown hair parted in the middle. She
was wearing a dark shirt at the time of the robbery.
The suspects fled the scene in a pair of stolen vehicles — the male in a white Mercedes Benz C250, the female in a white Dodge Ram.
The Mercedes Benz was recovered the next day near Range Road 30 and Highway 12 in Lacombe County. The Dodge was also later recovered in Bentley, where it had been abandoned near the Monkey Top Bar.
Police are asking for assistance from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, or from anyone who may have witnessed anything suspicious lead-ing up to it. Those who think they may have seen either of the vehicles involved are also asked to contact police.

February 2110:44 p.m. – RCMP
have laid two counts of failing to comply with a recognizance order against a Sylvan Lake male. The 29-year-old male was under conditions to remain in his residence during curfew hours and to be
present to respond to checks by police. As a result of non-compliance, the male has been formally charged and a Canada-wide warrant has been issued for his arrest.
February 222:13 a.m. – A 911 call
was received by RCMP dis-patch of an erratic driver crossing the center line on Highway 11. A complain-ant advised that his vehicle was almost run off the road by the suspect vehi-cle. Police located the vehi-cle illegally parked outside a residence on William Close in Sylvan Lake. As the truck was being towed, an intoxicated male came out of the residence caus-
ing a disturbance. The 22-year-old male was sub-sequently arrested at the scene and transported to cells until sober.
February 236:22 p.m. – RCMP
received 911 calls of a male lying along Highway 11 at 60th Street near Sylvan Lake. The male was located by police lying on the shoulder of the road near a ditch. An ambulance attended the scene as a precaution however the male did not require medi-cal attention. A 45-year-old male from the Rocky Mountain House area was arrested for public intoxi-cation. He was transported to cells for his own safety
and released when sober. February 24
11:43 a.m. – Police and fire crews attended the Sylvan Lake Industrial Park after a fire was report-ed at the HSE parking lot. The front portion of a vehicle sustained signifi-cant damage but the blaze was extinguished quickly with no further damage or injuries reported. The fire is not believed to be suspi-cious in nature.
12:58 p.m. – An attempted break and enter at a residence in Sylvan Lake was reported to RCMP. A male advised that he was home alone at his residence on Palmer Close when an unidenti-
fied person entered into the garage and opened a door accessing the resi-dence. The witness report-ed that the suspect fled immediately without entering into the home. The Police Dog Service unit was contacted and a patrol was conducted of the area but the suspect was not located.
February 279:32 p.m. – An 18-year-
old Sylvan Lake male is facing charges in connec-tion with an impaired driv-ing complaint in Sylvan Lake. A witness reported that a truck crossed over the center lane almost causing a head-on collision with his vehicle. The wit-
ness contacted RCMP after he turned around to follow the suspect vehicle. The vehicle was stopped by police on Lakeshore Drive at 52nd Street. A roadside screening device was uti-lized and the driver is fac-ing charges of impaired driving and having a blood alcohol level over .08.
11:12 p.m. – RCMP attended a location on Range Road 23 after a party was reported in the area. Police located a large bonfire and six parked vehicles near the boat launch area. The people in the area were checked for sobriety and dispersed. The fire was also extin-guished without incident.

We are now in the Church season of Lent. So what is important about that? Lent is a 40 day period observed before Easter so that we can do some self-examination of our souls to prepare our hearts to really understand what Jesus went through. During this time our Gospel readings lead us through the last days of Christ’s earthly life. We note that Jesus foretold His death but His disciples, couldn’t or wouldn’t believe Him. They believed that Jesus could perform many miracles for others, so surely He could avoid His own arrest and death. The death scenario seemed absolutely impossible for them to believe. Yet as the days went by, Jesus was indeed arrested and tried, and was put to death on a cross.So many people want to avoid thinking about what happened to Jesus. After all, we know the end of the story; three days later
Jesus rose from the dead. That is why we celebrate Easter. Yet how can we appreciate the price Jesus paid for our redemption if we do not observe the pain, betrayal and agony He suff ered?Jesus indeed could have avoided His horrifi c death. Yet he chose to do God’s will. And He did it for each one of us. Think about it: He paid a huge price to pay for our sins. He Himself had done nothing wrong.So when Good Friday rolls around this year, join others in our community who will carry a cross through the downtown area. Attend the community service at The Alliance Church, or in your own church. Walk with Christ through His agony, so that on Easter Sunday you can truly understand the joy of the resurrection. Thanks be to God for the gift of His Son. Amen.

Baron coaches shooters tosuccess at Canada Winter Games

Sylvan Lake target shooting coach Arno Baron added to his Canada Winter Games success when three of his shooters medalled at this year’s Games in Prince George, B.C. last month.
The Team Alberta coach saw his shoot-ers earn top honours in the Boys Pistol Team and Girls Pistol Team events, while another took home silver in the Girls Pistol Individual.
Baron has now been involved in five Canada Winter Games competitions, and in every single one has coached shooters to
the podium.But neither his nor his shooters’ success
is down to luck, he assures. Instead, it’s the end product of what he says has been “thousands and thousands of hours” com-mitted over the years to training and improving in the sport.
“Some of the kids had trained for (the Winter Games) for four years, some of them for six years,” he said. “I just train the kids the way I would train myself. It takes a lot of hard work and dedicated training, and it’s like with any other professional ath-lete — you have to keep it up. Success doesn’t happen without some effort.”

The money will go toward the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program, which aims to create sporting opportunities for children regard-less of their families’ financial standing.

knows all about, having been a member of the Canadian National Team during his own competitive career and competed internationally at World Cup events.
It’s the knowledge and experience he gained during that time — and since then, too — that he now passes on to younger generations of shooters.
“I train people to be shooting at that level,” he said, adding some of his under-studies will follow in his footsteps when they compete at an upcoming junior World Cup competition in Germany as members of the Canadian Junior Development Team.
And he’d like to see Central Alberta’s next generation of shooters given the opportunity to compete in the Canada Winter Games locally when the Games come to Red Deer in 2019.
A decision was made by the organizing committee to exclude target shooting from the Games’ lineup of events, but Baron has been helping circulate a petition lobbying for the sport’s reinstatement.
While the sport’s ultimate fate in the Games remains unclear, the petition has so far proven effective in raising awareness of the issue.
“I think we’ve (gathered) over 35 pages of petitions, and the petition went out to every coach and every manager, and to every province and territory in Canada,” said Baron. “If nothing else, everybody in Canada will know that we’re being exclud-ed.”
Baron added he wouldn’t be surprised if the petition eventually surpasses 10,000 signatures.

Dickson Store Museum recognizes ‘rare gem’
volunteers at AGMSTUART FULLARTON

The Dickson Store Museum kicked off what’s gearing up to be another
busy year with its annual general meeting and volun-teer appreciation event on Feb. 7.
About 40 people attended the event, which was held
with the theme ‘Volunteers are Rare Gems.’ Tables were decorated accordingly for the supper prepared by Kathleen Raines.
Museum manager Sharon Lightbown spoke about the importance of vol-unteers, whom she referred to as “very rare gems.” She then showed her apprecia-tion for them by performing an original song.
Board members include Harold Kemtrup, Sandy Martin, Bill Taylor, Tracy Rowbotham, Shauna Mundell, Antonia Nissen, Doreen Nicholson and Lynne Morck, who joined as treasurer in November 2014.
A new exhibit was erect-ed by the museum last year showing the impact of tele-phones in rural areas. ‘Communication Comes to Dickson’ features telephones from the 19th century for-ward, and will be displayed throughout the season.
The museum is also set to become a Visitor Information Tourist Centre. As such, it will carry bro-chures and information on tourism destinations and attractions across the entire province. Road maps will also be sold in the gift shop.
Lightbown said she’ll be working on a number of other projects throughout the winter months.
The museum will cele-brate its 25th anniversary in 2016, and staff are appealing to the public for ideas on how to mark the momen-tous occasion. Suggestions may be passed on to Lightbown by emailing her at [email protected] or by calling 403-728-3355.
The museum opens this year Saturday, May 16.
Other notable events include Thrilling Thursday on July 23, Sunday Afternoon at the Museum on July 26, Teddy Bear Picnic on Aug. 6, Last Day of the Season on Aug. 31, Harvest Festival on Sept. 13 and Julestue on Nov. 7.

Canada Winter Games experience a positive one for

Cross-country skier Anna Zimmerman returned to Sylvan Lake early this week after competing at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.
All competitors were under the age of 23 and Zimmerman, 17, was the youngest to compete. She entered competitions both individually and as part of a team.
Although neither her nor her team won any medals, she said her team came close to a bronze medal, but missed by a mere 40 seconds.
Zimmerman said she entered the Games with an indi-vidual goal of becoming one of the top 40 fastest skiers. She said she was pleasantly surprised when she placed in the top 25, as she landed in 21st place in her first competition of the 7.5-kilometre classic long run.
“Personally, I think I did really well,” Zimmerman said. “I was really surprised to be in the top 25, but this entire Canada Winter Game experience has definitely been a huge athletic step to my career.”
Zimmerman said she was not expecting to do as well as she did, as all the girls she was competing with and against were older than her.
“I expected to get into the top 40,” she said. “I was over-whelmed and shocked with my results.”
Zimmerman said the experience made her realize what she can do as an athlete, and said it pushed her to become a better skier.
She said she feels good about her success and finds it satisfying as she has been skiing since the age of four.
She also felt it was rewarding being able to race against Canada’s best.
At the Games, Zimmerman said she received support from her teammates, her family who cheered her on and her friends who wished her luck.
“They all have their expectations in what I can do,” Zimmerman said. “But at the same time, they still con-gratulated me and they know that I’ve done my best out there.”
Along with the goal of being in the top 40, Zimmerman said she wanted to have fun.
She accomplished that goal not just at the Games, but also in Prince George, where she was able to explore and meet other athletes from across the country.
“It’s cool to see and learn what their culture is like,” she said.
Zimmerman said her next goal is to compete at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

The Sylvan Lake Pond Hockey Tournament proved a hit upon its return to the Sylvan Lake ice over the week-end.
The annual event, can-celled last year due to ice instability, saw 25 teams vying for one of three grand prizes of $1,500 cash as well as bragging rights over a 24-hour period beginning Friday night.
Plenty of food, enter-tainment and guest appearances were enjoyed by all who took in the tournament, which began
with two ceremonial puck drops
— one by former NHL player Georges Laraque (Edmonton Oilers, Phoenix Coyotes, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens), the other by Sylvan Lake mayor Sean McIntyre.
The action-packed event wrapped up with an appearance by Canada’s favourite trailer park supervisor and assistant trail-er park supervisor, Jim Lahey and Randy, respectively, of Trailer Park Boys fame.
Temperatures over the weekend, though chilly, made for ideal pond hockey conditions, and helped create an event memorable for all who took part.

The Bentley Generals were greeted by a warm reception as they played their third semi-finals game against the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs at the Eckville Arena last Friday.
Although they lost 5-2, the Generals’ players enjoyed the solid turnout and strong support, which has become some-what commonplace during their recent games played in Eckville, according to coach Ryan Tobler.
Ice problems causing safety concerns at their own home arena have caused the Generals to temporarily relocate to Eckville for games.
“It’s worked out great,” said Tobler. “I didn’t know what to expect, but there have been good crowds. The guys love the ice, and it’s a nice place to play in as a player.”
The Generals went on to defeat the Chiefs 5-2 on Saturday, giving them a 3-1 lead in the series. Game five takes place in Eckville on Friday (March 6).

The following article and accompanying pictures were submitted by the Sylvan Lake and District Archives Society as part of a series celebrating the society’s 20 years of exis-tence this year. The Archives Society is open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. at its new location in the lower level of the town’s Municipal Government Building.
Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway, what are now the CNR and the CPR, respectively, in the 1900s were in fierce competition to open up the west country by rail, and several injunctions and altercations took place.
Finally, the railroad com-panies accomplished their goals and stations were built in Sylvan Lake — the CPR was located near the present HJ Cody School and the CNR was about where Railside Plaza is today.
In the early days, living in the station house was chal-lenging! The buildings were often cold and drafty, with only coal stoves for heat and cooking. Kerosene lamps were the source of light and outdoor ‘biffies’ made night sojourns in winter uncomfortable to say the least. A quote from Eva Jordan, wife of agent M. Jordan, sums it up — “I do believe one of the happiest days of my life was when I threw out that bucket of ashes from the stove, emptied the slop pail, and then moved to a modern home with running water, a bath-room, electric stove and gas furnace. Society (BARCWS) and its partners in the Sylvan Lake RCMP and Red Deer
County Protective Services during Assembly Day at Benalto School on Feb.
26 recognized six Benalto School students whose drawings were selected for
the Alberta Provincial Rural Crime Watch Association (APRCWA) 2015
Poster Contest. Three students — Kohen Mykyte, Kira Nelson and Taylor
Stauffer — won provincial status and were awarded certificates and
APRCWA cheques for their submitted drawings.
