Recently, the raised border

near the ceiling in our Down-

town sanctuary was en-

hanced. The border itself is a

repeating pattern of shells

and water droplets represent-

ing baptism. Beneath the

border is a poinsettia and a

swag of tassels. Above the

border is a flourish with seven

fronds. This new painting

restores the sanctuary to the

look found in a 1906 Easter

celebration picture. It is rich

with symbolism and meaning.

We will talk more about this

at our weekend celebration

Sunday at 10:50 a.m. Down-

town.

Just as there are symbols of

faith, there are signs of faith

in lives all around us.

This past weekend a college

student living in Springfield

called a friend in our congre-

gation asking to get baptized

sometime. His friend called

me and of course the answer

was, “Yes, we would love to

do that sometime.” Next

thing I knew the college stu-

dent had caught a ride to Lin-

coln and was calling to see if

he could be baptized within

the hour! So Saturday after-

noon, he was baptized in a

nearby lake. Such joy! Such

determination! Such faith!

God loves enthusiastic faith.

Whether captured in symbol or

sign, He loves faith.

Think about the symbols and

signs we regularly encounter.

Have you realized that God

uses even ordinary events to

create extraordinary moments?

This weekend something very

special is happening. We are

celebrating 125 years of minis-

try at Fourth & Osage. Think

of all the weddings, funerals,

sermons and worship services,

baptisms and Bible studies

held in that place. The build-

ing is not sacred because of

brick and mortar. It is sacred

because of the experiences

which have taken place within

its walls. It is special because

people have encountered God

there.

Don’t miss the chance to cele-

brate this very special occa-

sion. Come celebrate the good

things God has done and is yet

to do because of enthusiastic

faith!

See you there! ~jimd.
