Depression is a serious condition that should not be ignored. Check any of the following symptoms of depression you presently feel on a consistent basis, meaning you experience these feelings or actions more than three times a week at a significant level.

WARNING SIGNSIf you observe some of these warning signs in the lives of your coworkers, friends,

family or even in your own life, it’s time for action.

• Talking about suicide or death and even glorifying death

• Giving direct verbal cues such as “I wish I were dead” or “I am going to end it all”

• Giving less direct verbal cues, such as “soon you won’t have to worry about me,” “what’s the point of living?” or “who cares if I’m dead, anyway?”

• Self-isolating from friends and family

• Increased use of alcohol or drugs (legal or illegal)

• Expressing the belief that life is meaningless or hopeless and there are no solutions for their problems

• Starting to give away cherished possessions

• Exhibiting a sudden and unexplained improvement in mood after being depressed or withdrawn

• Neglecting his or her appearance and hygiene

• Openly discussing that he or she feels out of control or overwhelmed

• Exhibiting behavior changes that include hostility, blaming, argumentativeness, and insubordination, or appearing passive, defeated, and hopeless

• Acting out of character by inappropriately using or displaying his or her weapon unnecessarily or in an unsafe manner

• Exhibiting reckless behavior by taking unnecessary risks

• Deteriorating job performance
