IN FOCUS New Innovave Shelter Soluon Launched Airliſt in Preparaon of Harsh Winter Life Skills Training - Im- proving Lives UNHCR-SYRIA UNHCR-SYRIA UNHCR-SYRIA UNHCR SYRIA UNHCRINSYRIA Follow us: SYRIA Issue 13 of 2015 UNHCR Successfully Tests New Innovave Shelter Soluon HIGHLIGHTS ‘Fresh Displacement, Changing Dynamics- UNHCR Responds’ UNHCR Syria 2015 Mid-Year Report With the displacement of 7.6 million people in Syria, the shelter needs are massive with classical shelter intervenons no longer able to meet all the shelter needs of the displaced populaon. As a result of this, UNHCR has had to ‘think outside the box’ conceptual- izing, designing and launching addional types of shelter assistance, stressing community empowerment and ulizing its capacity. A number of pilot shelter projects have been launched recently for assistance through cash for work programmes and supported access to essenal building materials. One of the most innova- ve examples is the earth-bag house construcon system which is a simple tool which ulizes Cash for Work in the construcon of an emergency shelter. hp://www.refworld.org/docid/55e7f68a4.html UNHCR has recently concluded a fiſteen day appraisal in Qamish- li of this earth-bag house construcon system and found that the construcon of the earth-bag house is an efficient way to solve requirements encountered when people have to be provided with a basic home within a short period of me. Furthermore, the construcon does not need a profound knowledge so that it can be built by the beneficiaries themselves. Compared to tents the earth-bag built house has many advantages without being a permanent construcon and can easily be dismantled and the material can be reused. In addion this system gives beneficiar- ies the opportunity to work and earn income as well as smulat- ing small business opportunies. ©UNHCR /2015

The testing of this system has proved very successful with the main findings being:

• Anearth-bagwallisextremelystrong,owingtoitsthicknessandweight,thusisconsiderablymoreresistanttohighwindsorotherdestructiveforces(earthquake,flood,etc.)

Also the house can be easily divided intoroomsusingcurtainsorlightpartitionsandtheextensionofwallscanalsoallowfutureexpansion. Because of it successful testing of this pilot project UNHCR is now planning to expand the earth-bag house shelter solution to other areas in cooperation with its implementing partners.
