• 2017 May - US decides to arm the YPG Kurdish Popular Protection Units. These fight alongside the main opposition Syrian Democratic Forces, which captures the important Tabqa dam from Islamic State.

• 2017 June - US shoots down Syrian fighter jet near Raqqa after it allegedly dropped bombs near US-backed rebel Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Defeat of ISIS in Raqqa and Mosul• 2017 JULY – Mosul retaken from ISIS by Iraqi army with help 

of Peshmerga 

• 2017 October - The Islamic State group is driven from Raqqa, its de-facto capital in Syria by SDF – US backed .

• 2017 November - Syrian army (Assad) takes full control of Deir al-Zour from Islamic State. Syrian and Iraqi forces put IS under pressure in the dwindling areas still under its control.

TURKEY’S TROOPS IN SYRIA 

• Kurdish forces have strengthened at the expense of IS/ISIS• Operation Olive Branch - The offensive is against the Kurdish 

 People's Protection Units (YPG) and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) surrounding the Syrian city of Afrin.

•  Turkey also claims it is fighting ISIL,though the group does not exist in Afrin District

• Rojava - Democratic Federation of Northern Syria 

Sochi talks, January 2018On January 2018 Russia convened the Syrian National Dialogue 

Congress in Sochi, Russia, in which 1,500 delegates participated
