July 15-17 challenge

Page 2: SYS Participant Guide

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage" - Anais Nin

Our first SYS Challenge back in November was also the weekend of thedeadly attacks in Paris. Our first communications with our participants forthis 2016 SYS were sent the weekend of the Orlando attack.

This world is steeping in an increasingly stronger brew of fear. Fromsecond-guessing our everyday life choices to full-on Xenophobia.

But SYS is about courage. SYS is about strength. The strength ofconnecting to ourselves, and to the world.

And, in facing our fears, in sharing our shadows and finding the suntogether, we do something more. We listen to each other. We understandone another. We try to imagine how something so small to one of us, cancause someone else's world to grind to a halt.

We encourage bared souls, open to fully-freed compassion. How best totruly see one another? Flawed and heroic all at once.

That is the movement of SYS.

My friend, there's only one way to say it: You did it.

You took the step forward. You got off the dime. You're courageous, and you'regoing to be even more so soon. This is your time.

One thing to remember as you move forward through the SYS Challenge. Courage iscontagious. So TELL YOUR STORY. When you choose your challenges, tell others. Let them support you.

And when you do your challenges, tell your story on Facebook or Instagram (hashtag#scareyoursoul). When you do, you'll be putting your stake in the ground for all. YOUDID IT. And you'll be inspiring others everywhere in the process.

That, my friend, will create a movement. That's living. Now ... LET'S DO THIS.

Scare Your Soul is a global courage movement which started as a project of Thrive, a volunteer-led "happiness incubator" basedin Cleveland, Ohio.

The first Challenge kicked off in 2015 with hundreds of participants around the world embarking on a journey to discover theirbest selves.

The process was simple: choose three things that would push your comfort zone, and do them. Then, share them.

The combination of tackling challenges and telling the story of what happened proved to be pretty magical. We heard frompeople who did things like:

Yes, they were all different. But yet they were powerful in how connecting they were. We grow courageous by tackling our ownchallenges, and we grow in inspiration by hearing the stories of others.

Now, it's time to do it again. This guide will help you brainstorm your challenges, and point you forward. The rest is up to you.

Connected with a loved one after many years of silence Stopped drinking for a night Sang in public on a busy streetcorner Called a former best friend to apologize Went skydiving Sent a long-dormant business plan to kickstart a dream business Held hands with a guy while walking through the mall

1. Choose Your Individual Challenges. Use the Challenge Brainstorming Sheets at the back of this guideto brainstorm your three challenges. The sheets feature a process of two questions, plus a matrix. The processcan take anywhere from 10-20 minutes, depending on how deep you want to go.

2. Log them in. Once you have selected your three challenges, log them in at scareyoursoul.com/challenges. That way, we can plot you out on our global challenge map, and we can help keep you aware andaccountable to your choices.

3. Do The Challenge! On July 15-16-17, the time has come! Tackle one of your challenges each day. Whenare are complete with a challenge, be creative. Take a photo (or even better a video) which describes whatyou did.

4. Tell your story. Jump on social media and share your story. Post a photo or video of you actually doingthe challenge, or right after, with a description of what you did to our Facebook page -facebook.com/scareyoursoul - or your own Instagram account. Regardless of Facebook or Instagram, pleaseremember to use the hashtag:

SYS IN FOUR EASY STEPS

Page 6: SYS Participant Guide

OK, let's jump in.

Page 7: SYS Participant Guide

You may know exactly what you want to do during the challenge weekend of July 15, 16, and 17. If not, we're here to help.

The field of positive psychology focuses on the study of what makes people happier, have greater well being, and flourish in their lives. In orderto better categorize the key drivers of happiness, leading positive psychologists at the WholeBeing Institute generated a model called SPIRE.SPIRE represents the 5 dimensions of human activity which can lead to greater happiness and wellbeing: Spiritual, Physical, Intellectual,Relational, and Emotional.

Print Out The Brainstorm Sheets (or write out the questions on a piece of paper).

Now, answer the two questions. You should answer each question within the SPIRE category.

For example, the first question would be: "What scares me, but would make me feel courageous?" You'll first answer that in the Spiritual category. Your answers might be something like: "Going back to church after 10 years of being away." "Starting a meditation practice." "Slowing down so I canactually THINK." "Connecting with my deeper self and asking the tough questions."

Plot out all of the actions in Question #2 onto the matrix depending on how anxious it makes you feel. Remember anxious is good!

Then, select the three challenges out of all of them that seem the juiciest, the most exciting, the most like they would make an IMPACT on you if you didthem.

Congratulations. You just selected your three challenges for July 15, 16, 17. Now go to scraeyoursoul.com/challenges and log them in. Yeah!

FAQ's

Page 10: SYS Participant Guide

"Life is so much more than happiness. It seems as if so many people center their lives aroundseeking and striving for happiness, but what kind of life is that to lead? We have this one life.

This is our one chance to experience the full spectrum of emotions that we are given ashuman beings. I want to feel joy as well as pain. I want to shake with excitement, as well as

with sadness.

Every down we have forces us up. So go ahead. Fall in love. Make mistakes. Swear whenyou want to fucking swear. Because once you finally fall in love with the right person, make

the right choices, choose kindness over profanity, and fall asleep with a smile on your face, youknow you have made it. You have truly lived."

- This quote comes from a SYS participant, sharing her words on Day 1 of the November 2015challenge. Scare Your Soul serves as a movement which empowers people to experience life

to the fullest, which must require courage.
