By filling out your log book correctly, you greatly increase the odds of driving away from an inspection without being fined, ticketed or shut down.

A motor carrier must require every driver to record his/her duty status for each 24 hour period.

Off Duty time is when a driver is relieved of all duties and responsibilities and is not “on duty.”

Sleeper berth time may not be recorded as off-duty time.

Driving is all the time spent at the driving controls of a CMV in operation.

On-duty time is all time from the time a driver begins to work until the time he/she is relieved from work.

DOT regulations require all motor carriers and drivers to follow the hours-of-service requirements.

It is mandatory to take a 30 minute break/off duty time before the 7 1/2 hours of driving.

You must have 10 consecutive hours off duty before driving.

You can’t drive 11 hours without taking 10 hours off duty/ break.

You cannot drive after the 14th consecutive hour after coming on duty.

You must stop driving a CMV once you accumulate 70 on duty hours over the course of a 8 day period.

If you have 34 consecutive hours off duty, you get 70 hours back.

To avoid violations and resulting tickets, follow the rules and fill out your log book correctly.
