    2/16

    Introduction

It is used to create and manage workflows for automating

    cloud and datacenter management tasks.

    These tasks include automating

the creation, configuration, management, and monitoring of IT

    systems

provisioning new hardware, software, user accounts, storage, and other kinds of resources

automating various IT services or operational processes

    3/16

    Introduction

    It provides end-to-end automation

coordination, and management using a graphical interface to

connect diverse IT systems, software, processes, and practices.

It provides tools for building, testing, and managing custom IT solutions.

It also facilitates cross-platform integration of

disparate hardware and software systems in

    heterogeneous environments.

    4/16

    Introduction

It is a key component of System Center for

    building private clouds because

it allows you to connect complex actions or processes

and make them into single tasks that can then be runautomatically through scheduling or in response to

service reuests from customers or users.

It is also a valuable tool for automating complex, repetitive tasks in datacenter environments and can

simplify the management of a large, heterogeneous

    datacenter.

    How Orchestrator Works

!rchestrator automates tasks and processes using

    runbooks.

" runbook is a logical representation of a seuenceof activities that orchestrates a workflow, a series of

actions that take place against targeted systems,

    networks, and other resources

    How Orchestrator Works

    #unbooks can be created using the #unbook $esigner, a

graphical tool that uses drag-and-drop functionality to uickly

and easily connect different actions, like running a program,

    sending an email message.

The different actions are known as activities and are

organi%ed by the system into what are known as integrationpacks.

    How Orchestrator Works

Integration packs can be created to connect any systemthat has a programmatic interface, including &icrosoft

    'xchange, &icrosoft Share(oint, System Center,

    &icrosoft )indows "%ure, *&ware.

!nce created and tested, runbooks can be checked into

the orchestration database, after which the runbook can

be triggered to perform its intended task.

'ach reuest to run a runbook creates a new job in the

orchestration database, and a new instance of the +ob is

created when a runbook server processes the +ob.

    How Orchestrator Works

The components of an !rchestrator deployment areRunbook Designer " graphical design tool that lets

you create new runbooks, configure the activities in a

runbook, modify the activities in a runbook, and

    perform other runbook management tasks.

Runbook Tester " tool that lets you validate and test

    the runbooks you create.

Runbook Server !ne or more servers that run the

service that manages runbooks and runs instances of

    runbooks.

    How Orchestrator Works

Deployment Manager " tool used to deployrunbook servers, #unbook $esigner instances,

    and integration packs.

    Orchestration Database The database that

    stores !rchestrator configuration information,

logs, runbooks, and +obs. The orchestration

database can be deployed on either &icrosoft

    S Server or !racle.

Management Server The server that provides

    communications between the orchestration

    database and the #unbook $esigner.

    How Orchestrator Works

Orchestration Web Service " #'ST-based webservice that lets you use applications and scripts

to start and stop runbooks and retrieve

    information about their operations.

Orchestration Console " web-based tool you

can use to view a list of runbooks and runbook

servers, view the current status and history of

runbooks, start and stop runbooks, and view

events related to runbook servers. The

functionality of the !rchestration console is a

subset of those of the #unbook $esigner.
