    THEBASICS

    TheCoreMechanic:Wheneveryouattemptanactionthathassomechanceoffailure,yourollatwentysideddie(d20).Todetermineifyourcharactersucceedsatataskyoudothis:Rollad20.Addanyrelevantmodifiers.Comparetheresulttoatargetnumber.Iftheresultequalsorexceedsthetargetnumber,yourcharactersucceeds.Iftheresultislowerthanthetargetnumber,youfail.

    DICEDicerollsaredescribedwithexpressionssuchas3d4+3,whichmeansrollthreefoursideddiceandadd3(resultinginanumberbetween6and15).Thefirstnumbertellsyouhowmanydicetoroll(addingtheresultstogether).Thenumberimmediatelyafterthedtellsyouthetypeofdietouse.Anynumberafterthatindicatesaquantitythatisaddedorsubtractedfromtheresult.

    d%:Percentilediceworkalittledifferently.Yougenerateanumberbetween1and100byrollingtwodifferenttensideddice.One(designatedbeforeyouroll)isthetensdigit.Theotheristheonesdigit.Two0srepresent100.

    ROUNDINGFRACTIONSIngeneral,ifyouwindupwithafraction,rounddown,evenifthefractionisonehalforlarger.Exception:Certainrolls,suchasdamageandhitpoints,haveaminimumof1.

    MULTIPLYINGSometimesarulemakesyoumultiplyanumberoradieroll.Aslongasyoureapplyingasinglemultiplier,multiplythenumbernormally.Whentwoormoremultipliersapplytoanyabstractvalue(suchasamodifieroradieroll),however,combinethemintoasinglemultiple,witheachextramultipleadding1lessthanitsvaluetothefirstmultiple.Thus,adouble(2)andadouble(2)appliedtothesamenumberresultsinatriple(3,because2+1=3).

    Whenapplyingmultiplierstorealworldvalues(suchasweightordistance),normalrulesofmathapplyinstead.Acreaturewhosesizedoubles(thusmultiplyingitsweightby8)andthenisturnedtostone(whichwouldmultiplyitsweightbyafactorofroughly3)nowweighsabout24timesnormal,not10timesnormal.Similarly,ablindedcreatureattemptingtonegotiatedifficultterrainwouldcounteachsquareas4squares(doublingthecosttwice,foratotalmultiplierof4),ratherthanas3squares(adding100%twice).

    ABILITYSCORES

    ABILITYMODIFIERSEachability,afterchangesmadebecauseofrace,hasamodifierrangingfrom5to+5.Table:AbilityModifiersandBonusSpellsshowsthemodifierforeachscore.Italsoshowsbonusspells,whichyoullneedtoknowaboutifyourcharacterisaspellcaster.Themodifieristhenumberyouapplytothedierollwhenyourcharactertriestodosomethingrelatedtothatability.Youalsousethemodifierwithsomenumbersthatarentdierolls.Apositivemodifieriscalledabonus,andanegativemodifieriscalledapenalty.

    ABILITIESANDSPELLCASTERSTheabilitythatgovernsbonusspellsdependsonwhattypeofspellcasteryourcharacteris:Intelligenceforwizards;Wisdomforclerics,druids,paladins,andrangers;orCharismaforsorcerersandbards.Inadditiontohavingahighabilityscore,aspellcastermustbeofhighenoughclassleveltobeabletocastspellsofagivenspelllevel.(Seetheclassdescriptionsfordetails.)

    THEABILITIESEachabilitypartiallydescribesyourcharacterandaffectssomeofhisorheractions.

    STRENGTH(STR)Strengthmeasuresyourcharactersmuscleandphysicalpower.Thisabilityisespeciallyimportantforfighters,barbarians,paladins,rangers,andmonksbecauseithelpsthemprevailincombat.Strengthalsolimitstheamountofequipmentyourcharactercancarry.YouapplyyourcharactersStrengthmodifierto:Meleeattackrolls.Damagerollswhenusingameleeweaponorathrownweapon(includingasling).(Exceptions:OffhandattacksreceiveonlyonehalfthecharactersStrengthbonus,whiletwohandedattacksreceiveoneandahalftimestheStrengthbonus.AStrengthpenalty,butnotabonus,appliestoattacksmadewithabowthatisnotacompositebow.)Climb,Jump,andSwimchecks.ThesearetheskillsthathaveStrengthastheirkeyability.Strengthchecks(forbreakingdowndoorsandthelike).

    DEXTERITY(DEX)Dexteritymeasureshandeyecoordination,agility,reflexes,andbalance.Thisabilityisthemostimportantoneforrogues,but

  • itsalsohighonthelistforcharacterswhotypicallywearlightormediumarmor(rangersandbarbarians)ornoarmoratall(monks,wizards,andsorcerers),andforanyonewhowantstobeaskilledarcher.YouapplyyourcharactersDexteritymodifierto:Rangedattackrolls,includingthoseforattacksmadewithbows,crossbows,throwingaxes,andotherrangedweapons.ArmorClass(AC),providedthatthecharactercanreacttotheattack.Reflexsavingthrows,foravoidingfireballsandotherattacksthatyoucanescapebymovingquickly.Balance,EscapeArtist,Hide,MoveSilently,OpenLock,Ride,SleightofHand,Tumble,andUseRopechecks.ThesearetheskillsthathaveDexterityastheirkeyability.

    CONSTITUTION(CON)Constitutionrepresentsyourcharactershealthandstamina.AConstitutionbonusincreasesacharactershitpoints,sotheabilityisimportantforallclasses.YouapplyyourcharactersConstitutionmodifierto:EachrollofaHitDie(thoughapenaltycanneverdroparesultbelow1thatis,acharacteralwaysgainsatleast1hitpointeachtimeheorsheadvancesinlevel).Fortitudesavingthrows,forresistingpoisonandsimilarthreats.Concentrationchecks.Concentrationisaskill,importanttospellcasters,thathasConstitutionasitskeyability.IfacharactersConstitutionscorechangesenoughtoalterhisorherConstitutionmodifier,thecharactershitpointsalsoincreaseordecreaseaccordingly.

    INTELLIGENCE(INT)Intelligencedetermineshowwellyourcharacterlearnsandreasons.Thisabilityisimportantforwizardsbecauseitaffectshowmanyspellstheycancast,howhardtheirspellsaretoresist,andhowpowerfultheirspellscanbe.Itsalsoimportantforanycharacterwhowantstohaveawideassortmentofskills.YouapplyyourcharactersIntelligencemodifierto:Thenumberoflanguagesyourcharacterknowsatthestartofthegame.Thenumberofskillpointsgainedeachlevel.(Butyourcharacteralwaysgetsatleast1skillpointperlevel.)Appraise,Craft,DecipherScript,DisableDevice,Forgery,Knowledge,Search,andSpellcraftchecks.ThesearetheskillsthathaveIntelligenceastheirkeyability.AwizardgainsbonusspellsbasedonherIntelligencescore.TheminimumIntelligencescoreneededtocastawizardspellis10+thespellslevel.AnanimalhasanIntelligencescoreof1or2.Acreatureofhumanlikeintelligencehasascoreofatleast3.

    WISDOM(WIS)Wisdomdescribesacharacterswillpower,commonsense,perception,andintuition.WhileIntelligencerepresentsonesabilitytoanalyzeinformation,Wisdomrepresentsbeingintunewithandawareofonessurroundings.Wisdomisthemostimportantabilityforclericsanddruids,anditisalsoimportantforpaladinsandrangers.Ifyouwantyourcharactertohaveacutesenses,putahighscoreinWisdom.EverycreaturehasaWisdomscore.YouapplyyourcharactersWisdommodifierto:Willsavingthrows(fornegatingtheeffectofcharmpersonandotherspells).Heal,Listen,Profession,SenseMotive,Spot,andSurvivalchecks.ThesearetheskillsthathaveWisdomastheirkeyability.Clerics,druids,paladins,andrangersgetbonusspellsbasedontheirWisdomscores.TheminimumWisdomscoreneededtocastacleric,druid,paladin,orrangerspellis10+thespellslevel.

    CHARISMA(CHA)Charismameasuresacharactersforceofpersonality,persuasiveness,personalmagnetism,abilitytolead,andphysicalattractiveness.Thisabilityrepresentsactualstrengthofpersonality,notmerelyhowoneisperceivedbyothersinasocialsetting.Charismaismostimportantforpaladins,sorcerers,andbards.Itisalsoimportantforclerics,sinceitaffectstheirabilitytoturnundead.EverycreaturehasaCharismascore.YouapplyyourcharactersCharismamodifierto:Bluff,Diplomacy,Disguise,GatherInformation,HandleAnimal,Intimidate,Perform,andUseMagicDevicechecks.ThesearetheskillsthathaveCharismaastheirkeyability.Checksthatrepresentattemptstoinfluenceothers.Turningchecksforclericsandpaladinsattemptingtoturnzombies,vampires,andotherundead.

  • SorcerersandbardsgetbonusspellsbasedontheirCharismascores.TheminimumCharismascoreneededtocastasorcererorbardspellis10+thespellslevel.

    Whenanabilityscorechanges,allattributesassociatedwiththatscorechangeaccordingly.Acharacterdoesnotretroactivelygetadditionalskillpointsforpreviouslevelsifsheincreasesherintelligence.

    RACES

    FAVOREDCLASSAcharactersfavoredclassdoesntcountagainsthimorherwhendeterminingexperiencepointpenaltiesformulticlassing.

    RACEANDLANGUAGESAllcharactersknowhowtospeakCommon.Adwarf,elf,gnome,halfelf,halforc,orhalflingalsospeaksaraciallanguage,asappropriate.AcharacterwhohasanIntelligencebonusat1stlevelspeaksotherlanguagesaswell,oneextralanguageperpointofIntelligencebonusasastartingcharacter.Literacy:Anycharacterexceptabarbariancanreadandwriteallthelanguagesheorshespeaks.ClassRelatedLanguages:Clerics,druids,andwizardscanchoosecertainlanguagesasbonuslanguageseveniftheyrenotonthelistsfoundintheracedescriptions.Theseclassrelatedlanguagesareasfollows:Cleric:Abyssal,Celestial,Infernal.Druid:Sylvan.Wizard:Draconic.
